Does the Karate Kid Have a Kung Fu Dream? Hong Kong Martial Title Arts between Hollywood and Beijing Author(s) Marchetti, G JOMEC Journal: Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, 2014, Citation n. 5 Issued Date 2014 URL http://hdl.handle.net/10722/204953 Rights Creative Commons: Attribution 3.0 Hong Kong License JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Does the Karate Kid Have a Kung Fu Dream? Hong Kong Martial Arts between Hollywood and Beijing Gina Marchetti University of Hong Kong Email: [email protected] Keywords The Karate Kid choreography wu shu movie fu real kung fu Abstract This analysis of the martial arts choreography in The Karate Kid (2010) examines the contradictory matrix in which action films produce meanings for global audiences. A remake of a 1984 film, this iteration of The Karate Kid begins its imaginative battle over martial arts turf with English and Chinese titles at odds with one another. For English- speaking audiences, the title of the film promises a remake of the popular 1984 story of a displaced Italian American teenager (Ralph Macchio) trained by a Japanese American sensei (Pat Morita) to compete against the local karate bullies. However, the 2010 version has another identity competing with the first. Its Chinese title translates as Kung Fu Dream – Japanese culture, karate, and domestic American class and racial politics out of the picture. In this version, an African American youngster (Jaden Smith) moves to Beijing from Detroit and is taken under the wing of a drunken kung fu master (Jackie Chan) to battle a group of wu shu/san da villains.

  • Film Culture Crossover
1 Film Culture Crossover: Film Fight Choreography and the East/West Binary After Bruce Lee Paul Bowman Keywords: Batman Begins, Bruce Lee, Rey Chow, Cultural Translation, Hollywood, Jeff Imada, Dan Inosanto, Jeet Kune Do (JKD), Keysi Fighting Method (KFM), Martial Arts Choreography, Oriental Style, Jane Park, Jacques Rancière. Abstract: This paper reads the emergence of ‘Oriental style’ in Hollywood (Park 2010) as an exemplary case of what Rey Chow calls ‘cultural translation (Chow 1995). The paper explores some of the intimate yet paradoxical relationship between ‘Oriental’ martial arts and the drive for ‘authenticity’ in both film choreography and martial arts practices; plotting the trajectories of some key martial arts crossovers since Bruce Lee. It argues that, post-Bruce Lee, Western film fight choreography first moved into and then moved away from overtly Chinese, Japanese, Hong Kong or indeed obviously ‘Oriental style’; a move that many have regarded as a deracination or westernisation of fight choreography. However, a closer look reveals that this apparent deracination is actually the unacknowledged rise of Filipino martial arts within Hollywood. The significance of making this point, and the point of making this kind argument overall boils down to the insight it can give us into how ‘cultures’ and texts are constructed, and also into our own reading practices and the roles they play, sometimes in perpetuating certain problematic ethno-nationalist discourses. Bio: Paul Bowman (Cardiff University) is author of Theorizing Bruce Lee (2010), Deconstructing Popular Culture (2008), Post-Marxism versus Cultural Studies (2007), Culture and the Media (2012, forthcoming) and Beyond Bruce Lee (forthcoming 2013).

  • Press on New Movie About FMA (Pdf) Download
Press on NEW movie about FMA!! By marppio Our friend Jay Ignacio a filmmaker that is based in the Philippines. His latest movie is about the FMA and includes, among others, Dr. Remy Presas Jr. and Rodel Dagooc in addition to Dan Inosanto and others. Please read about the movie with this latest bit of press. Salamat! The greatest Filipino cultural export is kicking ass EMOTIONAL WEATHER REPORT By Jessica Zafra (The Philippine Star) Updated March 19, 2010 12:00 AM From one perspective, our great cultural moment may have occurred 11 minutes and 15 seconds into the Matt Damon action movie The Bourne Identity. Like many great cultural moments it passed without our noticing. The amnesiac Jason Bourne is trying to get some sleep on a park bench when he is accosted by two guards. One of them pokes him with a nightstick. Even before he‟s aware of what he‟s doing, Bourne swiftly, efficiently dispatches the two men. Matt Damon has just demonstrated a fighting technique that is sometimes called Kali, sometimes Arnis, but is indubitably one of the Filipino Martial Arts (FMA). Filipino martial arts had appeared in Hollywood movies before, but this was by far their biggest exposure. Before Jason Bourne went on to destroy scores of opponents in three global blockbusters, Filipino martial arts practitioners had commanded the respect of fighters from Hollywood to Russia. It‟s in the Philippines that they get little recognition. You did know that Bruce Lee‟s collaborator Dan Inosanto is Filipino, didn‟t you? And that top Hollywood fight choreographer Jeff Imada, who trained Matt Damon in FMA, was a student of Inosanto? Or that the chief instructor of Spetsnaz, Russian special forces in Moscow, is a Filipino named Mumbakki Foronda? You didn‟t? Then you really need to see a documentary called The Bladed Hand.

Special Issue: Reflections on post-Marxism: Laclau and Mouffe’s project of radical democracy in the 21st century RESEARCH The limits of post-Marxism: the (dis)function of political theory in film and cultural studies Paul Bowman, [email protected] School of Journalism, Media and Culture, Cardiff University, UK This article first sets out the value of the political discourse theory of Laclau and Mouffe. It argues that this work was central to the development of cultural studies, in its theorisation of social and cultural practices as being part of ‘political discourse’. This confers a dignity, status, value and political importance on cultural practices of all kinds. However, the article seeks to probe the limits of this approach to cultural politics, and it does so through a necessarily unusual exploration. First, it takes an example of something ostensibly trivial from the realms of film and popular culture and explores it in terms of Laclau and Mouffe’s categories, in two different ways. The ‘trivial’/pop cultural example is Bruce Lee. Could Bruce Lee be regarded as ‘politically’ significant or consequential? He was certainly an enormously influential film and popular cultural icon of the 1970s, one who arguably ignited a global ‘kung fu craze’.
