According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 1:42 a.m. about nine miles northwest of Lake Pillsbury. “It was a slip-strike earthquake,” said Susan Garcia of the USGS. It was followed by a series of 26 after- shocks, starting at 1:51 a.m. and continuing until 8:23 a.m. Wednesday. The strongest was 2.6 magnitude at 1:56 a.m. and the weakest a 1.6 magnitude at 6:39 a.m. Two-hundred and ninety-five people reported having felt the earthquake to the USGS Web site. Respondents lived as far north as Covelo and as far south as Guerneville and from Clearlake Oaks in the east all the way to the coast.
