February 24, 2019

In This Issue Greetings! From the Principal's Desk Only one more week of February to go. The shortest month News from the PHHS PTSA of the year also is turning out to be the quickest thanks in large part to all of the snow days we've had recently. Now News from PHHS that we are down to the final few days of the month, I News from BCPS and PHHS want to pass along a reminder to parents of seniors: Community Student members have a month from Friday to turn in their PHHS PTSA Business Partners PTSA Scholarship application and essay.

This Week at PHHS The PTSA awards multiple scholarships to senior members Next Week at PHHS each year based simply on the scholarship committee's assessment of their essays. Grade point average, extra- curricular activities, and financial need have nothing to do Quick Links with it. It all comes down to how well your child answers PHHS PTSA the essay question and follows directions. Perry Hall HS PHHS Alumni Association In prior years I've served on this committee. A large PHHS Athletic Boosters number of parent- and faculty-PTSA members do, and they County Public all are asked to evaluate the essays on a specific set of Schools criteria and present a score to each. The winners are

those students with the best cumulative average after all reviewers submit their scores. It is important not only to answer the essay question, but to follow the directions and to have no errors. In the past, a number of students have submitted essays with typos and obvious grammatical mistakes, or didn't follow the instructions. These errors are costly, and so easily avoided.

This year's scholarship question is: What is the biggest obstacle you've encountered in your life, and how did you overcome it and let it shape you into the person that you are today? The application form is available for download from the PTSA website. Completed forms and essays can be submitted anytime between now and 2:30 p.m. on Monday, April 1, either to the PTSA mailbox in the school office, or by e-mail to [email protected]. Good luck to all our senior PTSA members!

Have a good week! Chris Christine Hagan President, PHHS PTSA 2018-2019 School Year [email protected]

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents,

On Saturday, the county Physics Olympics took place at . Our teams were led by teachers Bill Dunkerton and Jon Roland. It is a great event and encourages student teams to engage in scientific intellectual challenges against other high school teams. Even though we didn't place this year, our students gained a valuable experience and spent the morning with like-minded county students who are excited by science.

The PHHS counseling department organized the CCBC day at Perry Hall on Friday where they presented their programs in the library to seniors. I learned that CCBC now has a study abroad program.

Please plan to attend the Perry Hall High spring musical, Beauty and the Beast, either on Friday, March 1, at 7 pm, or Saturday, March 2, at 2 pm or 7 pm.

If you haven't taken the Stakeholder Survey yet, you still have time. The survey only takes a few minutes and is used to guide our future together. Join our more than 63,000 responses and take the survey by its extended deadline of Wednesday, March 6.

Special Thanks! Our organization survives and thrives due to the generosity and support of others. We count on our parents, the students and staff of the school, and the strong support of our alumni, but we would be remiss if we did not also thank those businesses that support us on an ongoing basis throughout the year. The contributions made to our organization both financially and through in-kind gifts means a lot to us and our success and for that reason PHHS PTSA acknowledges the following businesses:

The Avenue at White Marsh: Each summer The Avenue provides our PTSA with the opportunity to rent chairs at their Shop & Eat to the Beat concert series on Fridays and Saturday nights. This is a wonderful opportunity for our PTSA to be in the community, and put us on the path to reaching our financial goals for the year.

Chick-fil-A: The biggest supporter of our Golden Gators Program, Chick-fil-A donates heavily to our student recognition program.

Self Storage One of Perry Hall: Self Storage One provides us with a storage facility for the items we collect for our Clothing Drive.

Jerry's Toyota: Jerry's remains one of our biggest supporters of our After Promo Party donating money for prizes and food in hopes of creating a safe environment for continued fun the night of the prom.

Safeway: A big donor to our organization last fall, Safeway is hosting the drawing for The Great Gator Restaurant Raffle this December.

Giant: A donor to our staff Welcome Back Breakfast this August.

Starbucks: A frequent donor of coffee to PTSA events throughout the school year.

The All American Steakhouse & Sports Theater, Applebee's, Bar Louie, Basta Pasta, Bertucci's Italian Restaurant, Bill Bateman's Bistro, The Bowman Restaurant, Buffalo Wild Wings, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Casa Mia's White Marsh, Conrad's Seafood Restaurant, Das Bierhalle, Della Rose's Avenue Tavern, DeNiro's Pizza, DeSantis Pizza Grill & Bar, Dominick's Pizza of Perry Hall, The Green Turtle Sports Bar & Grille, Gunpowder Lodge, Italian Sensation, Ledo Pizza, Lib's Grill, Liberatore's Ristorante, Looney's Pub, MidiCi The Neopolitan Pizza Company, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, P.F. BCPS Hosting "FAFSA Frenzy" to Help Parents of Graduating Seniors Seek Financial Aid for College As you are aware, the deadline for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (the FAFSA) for is March 1. This is the first step in receiving financial aid from the federal government, state aid, and school scholarships and grants. Aid is available for students going to a 4-year college, 2-year college (CCBC) and trade or vocational schools. Basically, any accredited higher-education.

On Tuesday, February 26, time will be set aside at school for students to work on their FAFSA. Students will need their social security number to begin the process. They will then bring home information to you with their log-in information so that you can finish the process at home. Parents are an important part of the process in that the federal government deems the parent responsible to pay for their child's higher education, even if that is not the case for your family. In very specific and limited cases, students are deemed independent and do not need their parents or guardians for the FAFSA. Please see http://www.fafsa.gov for specifics.

Here is a YouTube link to a demo of the FAFSA for your information. This video is for the 2018-2019 FAFSA. You and your child will be filling out the 2019-2020 FAFSA, however, the video is good information.
