I must begin my acknowledgements with Prof. Tibor Grüll, who first suggested to me the present papyrological research topic. I chose him as one of my supervisors when I began my doctoral studies in ancient history at the Eötvös Loránd University. Since then, he has continuously supported and guided me in my research. The excellent lectures given by distinguished scholars and papyrologists from all over the world as well as the days spent over unpublished papyrus fragments contributed a great deal to my knowledge of papyrology. Finally, I am most grateful to the Campus Hungary grant thanks to which I could spend five memorable months at the Freie Universität of Berlin, Institut für Judaistik under the supervisorship of Prof. Tal Ilan in the fall semester of 2013/14. I wish to express my greatest gratitude to her for the time she devoted to me, for her precious comments on different aspects of my research topic as well as for the trust she has put in me. When I arrived in Berlin in October 2013, Prof. Ilan had just set up a research project related to the Jews of Egypt. This project, entitled Corpus Papyrorum Judaicarum IV papyri project, is still iv ongoing under the directorship of Prof. Tal Ilan from the Freie Universität of Berlin and Prof. Noah Hacham from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The continuation of the work of V. A. Tcherikover, A. Fuks and M. Stern has long been the aim of different scholars. The late Itzhak F. Fikhman undertook the composition of CPJ IV decades ago, but his health conditions and death did not make possible the publication of his research work. His unfinished manuscript has been offered to Tal Ilan and Noah Hacham who, in the framework of the CPJ IV project, will finally publish all of Prof. Fikhman’s research with substantial reworking. The new volume will contain not only Greek papyri, but also Aramaic, Hebrew and Demotic texts. I am deeply indebted to Tal Ilan for giving me full access to Fikhman’s manuscript as well as to her own research material about the Jews of Egypt. Although I had already prepared my corpus of Jewish papyri before arriving to Berlin, I profited much from the research work of the above-mentioned scholars. There are some Greek papyri that escaped my attention when I was looking for Jewish papyri, and I am grateful to Tal Ilan to have drawn my attention to these texts: O.Ont.Mus. II 74, O.Eleph. DAIK 6, SB XXIV 16272, BGU XIV 2423 + BGU X 1938, P.Dion. 22 and P.Col. IV 77. Since the Demotic papyri related to Jews and Judaism had not been collected previously, I offered my Demotic material to the project with pleasure and prepared the documents for publication. Besides, Prof. Ilan entrusted me to rework the Ptolemaic Greek documentary papyri collected by Prof. Fikhman, which basically overlapped with my corpus and PhD topic. Prof. Fikhman’s notes were precious and thoughtful, thus, I mentioned his point of view several times in this thesis. Abstract: The fifteen Ptolemies that sat on the throne of Egypt between 305 B.C. (the date of assumption of basileia by Ptolemy I) and 30 B.C. (death of Cleopatra VII) are in most cases little known and, even in its most recognised bibliography, their work has been somewhat overlooked, unappreciated. Although boisterous and sometimes unloved, with the tumultuous and dissolute lives, their unbridled and unrepressed ambitions, the intrigues, the betrayals, the fratricides and the crimes that the members of this dynasty encouraged and practiced, the Ptolemies changed the Egyptian life in some aspects and were responsible for the last Pharaonic monuments which were left us, some of them still considered true masterpieces of Egyptian greatness. The Ptolemaic Period was indeed a paradoxical moment in the History of ancient Egypt, as it was with a genetically foreign dynasty (traditions, language, religion and culture) that the country, with its capital in Alexandria, met a considerable economic prosperity, a significant political and military power and an intense intellectual activity, and finally became part of the world and Mediterranean culture. The fifteen Ptolemies that succeeded to the throne of Egypt between 305 B.C. (date of assumption of basileia by Ptolemy I) and 30 B.C. (death of Cleopatra VII), after Alexander’s death and the division of his empire, are, in most cases, very poorly understood by the public and even in the literature on the topic.

It is located at about 7 km north of Faqous city, Sharqiya governorate, Egypt. The ancient name of El‐ Dabaa area was Avaris, which had been considered as the main capital of Hyksos (Dynasty XV) from 1650 to 1542 B.C. The whole area was covered by the deltaic deposits during the successive flood events along Nile Delta. Geomagnetic and geoelectric surveys have been carried out in order to outline the subsurface archaeological remains in this area. The target area, which is about 10000 m2, was surveyed in grid pattern each of 20x 10 m for magnetic survey and 20 × 20 m for geoelectri‐ cal resistance survey. Integrated results of the magnetic and geoelectric data analysis have suc‐ ceeded in delineating a clear subsurface picture of archaeological remains. The results show many linear anomalies, which may represent buried walls, as well as some small archaeological remains detached from the main walls. Also, we could notice some rectangular features with different sizes, which might be described as remains of different archaeological buildings.

He was the owner of the Papyrus of Hunefer, a copy of the funerary Egyptian Book of the Dead, which represents one of the classic examples of these texts, along with others such as the Papyrus of Ani. Hunefer was "Scribe of Divine Offerings", "Overseer of Royal Cattle", and steward of Pharaoh Seti I.[1] Judgment scene from the Book of the Dead. o In the three scenes from the Book of the Dead (version from ~1300 BCE) the dead man (Hunefer) is taken into the judgment hall by the jackal-headed Anubis. o The next scene is the weighing of his heart, with Ammut awaiting the result and Thoth recording. o Next, the triumphant Hunefer, having passed the test, is presented by the falcon- headed Horus to Osiris, seated in his shrine with Isis and Nephthys. Given pre-existing usages of the word ekkl ēsia in Greco-Roman and Jewish circles, I focus on three investigative priorities: What source(s) lie(s) behind the permanent self-designation of some Christ- followers as an ekkl ēsia ? What theological need(s) did that collective identity meet? What political and ethno-religious ideological end(s) did the appropriation of ekkl ēsia as a sub-group identity serve? In addressing these questions, particularly in relation to Paul’s use of the word ekkl ēsia , I contribute to at least three areas of ekkl ēsia research.

Beriah begat Heber and Malkiel (they were all sons of Zilpah , Leah’s maidservant); total of 16 people. • From Joseph: Manasseh and Ephraim. • From Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.   • Numerical Notation: a Comparative History
    This page intentionally left blank Numerical Notation Th is book is a cross-cultural reference volume of all attested numerical notation systems (graphic, nonphonetic systems for representing numbers), encompassing more than 100 such systems used over the past 5,500 years. Using a typology that defi es progressive, unilinear evolutionary models of change, Stephen Chrisomalis identifi es fi ve basic types of numerical notation systems, using a cultural phylo- genetic framework to show relationships between systems and to create a general theory of change in numerical systems. Numerical notation systems are prima- rily representational systems, not computational technologies. Cognitive factors that help explain how numerical systems change relate to general principles, such as conciseness and avoidance of ambiguity, which also apply to writing systems. Th e transformation and replacement of numerical notation systems relate to spe- cifi c social, economic, and technological changes, such as the development of the printing press and the expansion of the global world-system. Stephen Chrisomalis is an assistant professor of anthropology at Wayne State Uni- versity in Detroit, Michigan. He completed his Ph.D. at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he studied under the late Bruce Trigger. Chrisomalis’s work has appeared in journals including Antiquity, Cambridge Archaeological Jour- nal, and Cross-Cultural Research.
