La Sarthe à Vélo (V44), cycle route, linking the “Véloscénie” and the “Loire à Vélo” itineraries, provides access to 400km of marked trails to explore the county from North to South and East to West. In the north you can explore the low mountains of the Mancelles Alps, and to the West la Sarthe Valley and its navigable river passing through Le Mans.

La Vallée du Loir à Vélo (V47) takes you along the Loir via 320 kilometres of marked trail, from where the river rises in the Eure-et-Loir all the way to the Maine-et-Loire. On the way, you can explore picturesque villages and the valley’s typical vineyards.

Two regional cycle routes, optional alternatives to the “La Sarthe à vélo” V44 route and 16 circuits all add up to a great way to explore the Saosnois green belt, the exceptional Bercé forest and the Sarthois Perche.

Built at the end of the 3rd century, the 500 metres of wall, 11 towers and 3 gates remain very well preserved. The geometrical designs along the entire length of the wall and its red colour due to the Roussard stone make this an unusual construc- tion. The Le Mans walls are the best preserved of all the ancient , together with those of the 2 imperial capitals: Rome and Byzantium (Istanbul). © Ville du Mans

In the footsteps of the Plantagenets 19 trolling through the streets of the Plantagenet City is to S walk in the footsteps of Le Mans history. The Roman wall shelters the imposing Saint-Julien Cathedral, famous for its 47 musical angels painted under its vaults in the late 14th century and the oldest stained glass windows in France (early 12th centu- ry). A hundred timber-framed houses, sculp- ted corner pillars and engraved lintels tell the daily life of this city in the 14th century. Here, legends mingle with history. Clovis, and Richard the Lion- ©L. Lagarde heart each in turn invaded the city and made their mark on it. It is so well preserved that many historical films have been shot there (Cyrano de Bergerac, The Hunchback, Molière, Le Floch and recently Ford vs Ferrari with Matt Damon ...).

HIDDEN GARDENS

The Plantagenet City is unique for its many hidden gardens, some of which are open to the public. The best opportunity to disco- ver the city’s horticultural gems is during the event Entre Cours et Jardins (Between Courtyards and Gardens). Horticulturists, nurserymen, florists and artists take over the private gardens and ©Entre cours et jardins public squares of the medieval city. More than 40 gardens open their doors for a weekend. The Royal Abbey of Epau also hosts a classical music festival each year attracting many celebrities such as Barbara Hendricks in 2017. The most recent project is the creation of a permaculture garden in the abbey grounds.

Another «Remarkable Garden», at the Château de Poncé-sur-le-Loir looks like a theatre set that architects and gardeners might have arranged at the foot of a chalky cliff. It consists of French styled flower beds bordered by a maze of shady arbours. Behind the castle, an elegant 16th century gallery leads onto an Italian garden. Above it, the impressive brick and stone building is witness to the neo-gothic style of the 1830’s. One of the largest dovecotes in France boasts an ancient interior device: two revolving ladders that were used to feed the doves.

Part of the «Bienvenue à la Ferme» network, the farm is also organic, offering gourmet workshops: making coulis, jams, cakes, juices and sorbets from fruit grown on the farm, as well as preparing tea-time delights and gift baskets (truffles, chutneys).

The Exceptional Bercé Forest ©Aurélie Amiot The Bercé forest received the «Exceptional Forest» label last year. A valuable green lung in the south of la Sarthe, Bercé hosts a whole range of interesting itinera- ries for hikers, horse-riders or cyclists. Jasnières is the best known of la Sarthe wines. It is a small winegrowing area of just 65ha running along the Loir Valley in the south of la Sarthe. Henry IV enjoyed this wine and served it at the royal castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. With a rich bou- quet, fresh and floral, Jasnières can evoke bark, honey, acacia or hawthorn.
