The Lords Prayer

Matthew 6:9-13 Pastor Josh Johnson Newhall Church of the Nazarene Mount of :9-13

9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation,[a] but deliver us from the evil one.[b] Luke vs. Matthew

• Luke writes the Lord’s Prayer in a repetitiaus way. • “When you all Pray say…” • Assuming that the disciples are going to be praying.

• Matthew writes the Lord’s Prayer as a model for us to look at. • “We pray to “OUR” Father…” The assumption in praying the Lords Prayer is that we are praying with a community. This prayer is deeply personal, not a vague acknowledgement of the so-called Universal Father God.

We can address God as “ABBA” (Gal. 4:6) “Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ABBA, Father.” Galatians 4:6 Background •The Lord’s Prayer is part of the on the Mount (Ch. 5) •Beatitudes •Salt & Light • Murder, Adultery, Divorce, Oaths, Eye for Eye, Love for Enemies Chapter 6 continues the .

Giving to the Needy, Prayer, Fasting, Treasurers in Heaven, and Worry. Outline of Prayer The Lord’s Prayer is preserved in 2 forms: Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4 •Our Father Who is in Heaven •May your Kingdom come •May your will be done. •As in heaven, so on earth •Give us today the bread we need • •And forgive us our debts •As we also have forgiven those in debt to us.

• Lead us not into temptation.

•But deliver us from evil “Father”

The opening of the prayer marks out it’s character as the prayer of and the attitude it expresses. “Father” When we pray we recognize our “smallness” to God

In Ancient World to say the name of someone was to exercise power and authority • —-To put yourself under them. “Kingdom Come”

•God’s Kingly Rule •The request, then, is that this rule might be manifested and effective throughout the world. •What a great reminder to us!!! “Kingdom Come” Continued • The future emphasis which Jesus enshrined in the prayer he taught his disciples as their distinctive prayer. • Attitude of dependency and trust in God for the future is underscored. •Pray for the Future! From that time Jesus began to announce, “Change your hearts and lives! Here comes the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Matthew 4:17 “Daily Bread”

• God will sustain us physically

Jesus was perhaps alluding to God’s provision of manna, which was given every day in the desert. (Exodus 16:4-12) We recognize God as our provider.

• Right after Jesus instructs them to pray, He talks to them about anxiety. Matt. 6:25-34 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear, is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Forgive us of our Debts •Debts = Sins •“Trespasses” There is a Call to readiness to forgive for all those that pray this prayer. “…and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

Luke 11:4 Lead us not into Temptation

• This is an expression of an unconditional abandonment to the will and grace of God. • Example Jesus Prayer in Gethsemane. (Mt. 26:42) “He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” Matt. 26:42 Take Aways

•Trust - Jesus assures his disciples that God knows their needs. (See the second half of the chapter) • Forgiveness - Where there is no human forgiveness offered or received. God’s forgiveness is absent. •Communal - The Lord’s Prayer always speaks to us. God works the strongest through community prayer. Quote “Since the church can be defined as that of a community which prays the Lord’s Prayer, so it can be defined as the community in which forgiveness (acceptance) is genuinely given and received as expressive of and enabled by the forgiveness/acceptance of God.” Dictionary: Jesus and the Gospels Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debters. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.” How can our Prayers change with this as the model?
