We are committed to promoting the theological ideas of holiness from our Wesleyan background, along with a strong commitment to biblically based theology and exegesis. In this issue, while we are moving forward technologically, we are emphasizing where we come from and the strengths of our faith tradition. Paul Chilcote starts off this issue with an article about Wesleyan spirituality and the means of grace. These are key components to recognizing Asbury Theological Seminary as an institution and identifying our core spiritual values. Former long-time Asbury Journal editor, Laurence Wood, provides two articles on the development of Pentecostal sanctifcation in the writings of John Wesley, John Fletcher, and other early Methodists. It is this concept of Pentecostal sanctifcation that really helps connect Asbury’s Wesleyan heritage to its involvement in the Holiness Movement of the 19th century. Understanding how the Wesleyan-Holiness Movement developed out of this theology takes us to R. Jeff Hiatt’s article on the Pentecostal Mission, one early Holiness group that helped form and develop the Church of the Nazarene and its understanding of missions. Another important feature of Asbury Theological Seminary and its heritage is its commitment to reading and understanding scripture. Rabbi David Zucker’s article on reinterpreting the story of Rebekah from both the text and his Jewish heritage presents us with a very new way to see this Jewish matriarch, not as a scheming manipulative mother, but as a devoted wife who works with her husband to perpetuate God’s covenant. David B. Schreiner’s article from the New Testament examines the use of two Greek verbs that are frequently used together in Matthew, which provides a theme for understanding the nature of Jesus’ Messiahship in Matthew, and helps us see interesting parallels in the birth narratives regarding the magi and King Herod. Finally, Sungwon (Moses) Kim, a recent visiting scholar at Asbury from Korea, examines the new perspective of Paul and the theology and methodology of Anglican theologian N.T. Wright. Kim seeks to assess this popular theologian from an Evangelical framework. Such work reminds us of the need to be critical scholars rooted in scripture; a crucial part of the training at Asbury Theological Seminary. Danielson: From the Editor 7 The From the Archives essay this issue looks back to the work of another early fgure in the Holiness Movement, Arthur Greene. Rev. Greene is an obscure fgure in the history of the Holiness Movement and yet he rubbed shoulders with important fgures and even preached at camp meetings with Oswald Chambers. While his life has left only limited information, his family’s gift of a small collection of papers and an astounding collection of large camp meeting paintings, is a major treasure in our collection. In addition, a special collaborative book review of Asbury Theological Seminary professor, Bill T. Arnold’s edited book Ancient Israel’s History, helps highlight the scholarship that Asbury Theological Seminary values. Yes, The Asbury Journal has gone digital, but it remains committed to the values of its Wesleyan-Holiness heritage, its commitment to strong biblically- based scholarship, and its desire to spread scriptural holiness throughout the world. Going digital is one way to further this historic vision. As I am writing this, The Asbury Journal has been downloaded a total of 97,397 times since we frst went digital in 2012, and we were downloaded 40,921 times last year alone. We have been downloaded in 109 countries around the world. All of this is demonstrates much more impact than our traditional subscription base of around 1,200 print copies. Asbury Theological Seminary enters a globalized and technological world, but we do so frmly entrenched in our theological and historical heritage, seeking to advance the message of Wesleyan-Holiness around the world! COURSE DESCRIPTION An examination of classical Pentecostal theology with references to the early evangelical influences that contributed to its formation. Attention is given to the manner in which various Pentecostal emphases have been appropriated and developed within different charismatic settings. Evangelical individuals and groups provided the roots of what developed in the 20th century as a distinctive Pentecostal Theology. The unique doctrines which distinguish Pentecostalism from its evangelical cousins relate to the person and work of the Holy Spirit, particularly the baptism in the Spirit, speaking in other tongues, and the gifts of the Spirit. The course also includes an examination of several offshoots of Pentecostal theology such as the “prosperity gospel” and “apostolic renewal.” The goal of this course is to provide a forum for Pentecostals and non-Pentecostals to consider and assess the essential features of Pentecostalism, its orthodox roots, and its offspring groups. -1- II. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. identify the basic elements of orthodox theology which Pentecostals hold in common with other Christian groups 2. understand the distinctive features in the broad spectrum of Pentecostal beliefs 3. appreciate the integration of spiritual experience and doctrinal expression 4. recognize the essence of spiritual empowerment in Pentecostal evangelism and missions 5. employ the Scriptures in both a directive and corrective manner in addressing theological issues in Pentecostal / charismatic belief and practice III.

    In the Summer 2014 issue of Japan Harvest magazine, the official publication of the Japan Evangelical Missionary Association (JEMA), we began publishing profiles of our member missions. This has been an ongoing process, both to assemble profiles of existing members, and gather those of new members. As a result, this current booklet is not in alphabetical order, rather in the order in which profiles were published in our magazine.     The Free Presbyterian Magazine Vol 110 April 2005 No 4 Which Version?1 he shelves of today’s bookshops carry an almost endless variety of Bible Tversions. But how should we assess them? And should we assume that the newer the translation the better? The book under review should give considerable help to those who are asking these and similar questions. In his Preface, Mr Macgregor gives his own experience: “As a young Christian I went to a church that used the Authorised Version (AV). However, on moving with my wife and family to a different area, we went to a church that used the Good News Bible (GNB) and the New International Version (NIV). This enticed me away from the AV for a while. At first these new versions appeared to be easier to read and understand. However, soon I began to notice serious discrepancies (that is, Old Testament references to Christ veiled or missing) in the GNB. This troubled me greatly. I stopped using it, but continued with the NIV, which seemed more reliable. However, as I studied it and compared it with the AV I had first used, I began to feel concerned. The NIV had verses missing, and later I found it had many words missing. Its rendering of some parts gave a completely different meaning. The more I read and compared, the more concerned I became. Also, like the GNB, the NIV was more difficult to commit to memory. I bought a Revised Authorised Version (called in the USA, and now here, the New King James Version (NKJV)).

    Methodist History, 53:2 (January 2015) BOOK REVIEW J. Russell Frazier, True Christianity, The Doctrine of Dispensations in the Thought of John William Fletcher (1729-1785). Eugene, OR: Pickwick Publications, 2014. 320 pp. $31.50. J. Russell Frazier has offered a comprehensive interpretation of John William Fletcher’s doctrine of dispensations. He appropriately entitled it, True Christianity. Frazier has provided the context for understanding the thought of John Fletcher, highlighting that in his mature theological understanding he developed a soteriology corresponding to the history of salvation. Fletcher shows that the development of God’s revelation as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit generally reflects the personal history of salvation. In this reckoning, each individual believer progressively transitions from a general awareness of God to a more specific knowledge of God as Father and Creator revealed in the Old Testament. The believer then progresses to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, whose life is distinguished between his earthly ministry entailing his life, death, and resurrection (Easter) and the outpouring of his Holy Spirit upon the church (Pentecost). Frazier shows that the most problematic feature of Fletcher’s theology of dispensations is the soteriological use that he made between the early followers of Jesus (pre-Pentecostal believers) and Pentecostal believers. This theology of dispensations, as Frazier so rightly pointed out, has nothing in common with the dispensational theology of Darby or Schofield. As Frazier showed, Fletcher understood Jesus’ earthly life as a brief period of time which represented a development of faith which was “singular” (as Fletcher put it) to John the Baptist and the early disciples of Jesus.

    [AJPS 9:2 (2006), pp. 220-2431 Suzuki, The Life and Ministry of Kboma Yumiyama 221 years he remained in Japan's Pentecostal circle and for more than sixty years he was in a leadership position. He was one of the few people who witnessed both the forming years of the American AG related churches in Japan before the war as well as the founding and growth of JAG after the war. Therefore, it is not an exaggeration to say that Yumiyama himself was the history of the Assemblies of God ministry in Japan. THE LIFE AND MINISTRY OF KIYOMA YUMIYAMA Yumiyama talked about his life history in lectures and interviews. AND THE FOUNDATION OF JAPAN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD We have several books commemorating Yumiyarna, which are collections of essays by his former students and colleagues. However, he never wrote nor desired to write his own autobiography.3 There are many discrepancies in the details of his account^.^ We, therefore, need to check Masakazu Suzuki them very carefully. I had the privilege of conducting two interviews with Yumiyama asking about the history of JAG. He was very open to "Father" Juergensen instructed and gave courage to this man my inquiries but at the same time he was reluctant to give detailed who could have stumbled and given up... He has carried answers to some of my questions. His answers were sometimes very great responsibility and has been a spiritual leader - a man vague and could be taken in many different ways. He told me that the chosen of God.. Whatever the future holds, we earnestly pray that the God who raised up Moses and chose Joshua history of JAG is complicated and very difficult to explain.
