Fisheries Profile of Province

Bohol is an island province that nestled in the heart of along with the provinces of , and . It lies in the periphery of along with the island provinces of Cebu on the northwest, on the northeastern part and Southern Leyte on the southern part (Fig. 1). It is the tenth largest island in the with a total land area of 411,726 has,1,1009.23kms.shoreline length including offshore islands and 653.65 kms. shoreline length excluding offshore islands (Table 1).

Bohol has a total of 48 municipalities or 1,109 barangays with 15, 14 and 19 municipalities composing the first, second and third congressional districts, respectively. Thirty (30) of these municipalities are coastal towns while 18 municipalities are located in the interior part of the province.

The province with its known diverse ecosystem has maintained a pristine 69,614.2 sq. km. total coral reef area and 9,292.2 has. mangrove forest. The major aquaculture fishery commodities produced in 4,7238.2 has fishpond and 6,245.06. sq. km. municipal waters are seaweeds, finfishes, shrimps and oysters.

Bohol has a total population of 1,255,128 (NSO, 2013) and more than 400,000 or 33% are directly dependent on marine fisheries ecosystems for livelihood through fishing. Out of this population, more 47,772 are registered municipal fisherfolk and 2,025 are full- time commercial fishers and the rest are those involved in ancillary industries related to fishing such as fishing gear trading, fish sellers, fish processors.

Bohol Provincial Fishery Office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region VII has the jurisdiction over the management, conservation, development, protection, utilization and disposition of all fisheries and aquatic resources in the province except those in the municipal waters. In municipal waters, however, it may coordinate and assist Local Government Units (LGU’s) through its Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council (FARMC) in the conservation, development, protection and utilization of its fishery resources. It has also the function in the development of inland fisheries.

1. Fish R – A year-long program of the BFAR designed to enhance, fast track and complete the Municipal Fisherfolk Registry of coastal Local Government Units (LGUs) nationwide in accordance to RA 8550. Its objective is to develop and promote a simplified and standardized national registration system for municipal fisherfolk. Below is the updated number of fisherfolk registered in the Province of Bohol as of March 31, 2016.

2. Boat Registry System (BoatR) – a program of the BFAR which aims to establish a simplified and standardized national registration of fisherfolks, their fishing gears and fishing vessels.
