Commonwealth Test event The test event which was scheduled for earlier this year will now be held on August 7-8. Most of the lifters competing will be Indian lifters.

Commonwealth Games Delhi The Commonwealth Games scheduled from the 3rd to 14th October is shaping up to be another great event. The weightlifting dates are the 4th to 12th October. As teams are confirmed for the Commonwealth Games we will endeavor to let all Commonwealth countries know. I am pleased also to announce that all referees taking part at this Games are all from Commonwealth countries. And we would like to thank the IWF for understanding the importance of utilizing Commonwealth referees for Commonwealth Games.

CWF Electoral Congress The Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation Electoral Congress is scheduled to be held on the 11th October in Delhi, as on that day there is only one category being contested and that category starts at 7.00pm. At this stage we are looking at starting the Congress at 10.00am in the morning. We will advise all countries the time and place where the Congress will be held once it is confirmed by the Indian Weightlifting Federation. The agenda and nominations will also go out by the end of July.

Youth Olympic Games The first Youth Olympic Games will be held in Singapore from the 14th to 26th August. The weightlifting dates are 15th to 19th August. We are very pleased to see quite a lot of Commonwealth countries qualified and quite a number also receive IOC universality places. The Commonwealth countries which have qualified on their own merit are: Malaysia 1 girl, Nigeria 1 girl, India 1 girl, South africa 1 boy, Papua New Guinea 1 boy, Fiji 1boy and 1girl, New Zealand 1boy and 1girl,and Australia 1boy and 1girl.

The Commonwealth countries which received IOC universality places are: Nauru 1boy. Kiribati 1boy, Papua New Guinea 1girl, Solomon Island 1girl,Samoa1 girl,Tonga1boy, Pakistan 1boy and Uganda 1boy.

2010 World University Championships The World University Championships were held in Taiwan in the first few days of July. And what a great success it was for the Canadian team, winning one gold and one bronze medal in the men. Also they won one silver and one bronze in the women. Young Luna Grenier Francis lifted brilliantly in the 69kg category totaling 295kg, which puts him now in the running for the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The other Canadian lifters winning medals were: Goyette – Demers Laurent (bronze) in the 77kg category, Silver to Dozois –Prevost Marilou (silver in the 53Kgcategory and Beauchemin-Hadeau Marie-Eve (bronze) in the 75kg category. Congratulation Canada on this mighty effort.

World Juniors Sofia 2010 The World Junior Championships which was held in Sofia in the month of June saw six countries of the Commonwealth taking part. The countries were Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, India and South Africa.

Commonwealth rankings and records Thanks to Michael Noonan, our CWF record keeper and statistician, the Commonwealth ranking list to July 1st, 2010 have been circulated to all Commonwealth countries including records and other statistical information. The Commonwealth rankings and records can be seen on the CWF website at www.commonwealthweightlifting.com

ZKC Email Club International Tournament The annual ZKC Email International Club tournament has just been finalized. The event was once again a great success with 722 competitors from 108 clubs taking part. The winning club in the men section came from Cuba – the SCU Club and in doing so they won a set of ZKC 190kg weights. In the female section, the Haunabada Club from Papua New Guinea won and they also won a set of ZKC190kg weights.It was again pleasing to see that the five continents participated. The results can be seen on the CWF website at www.commonwealthweightlifting.com

2010 Commonwealth Junior & Youth Championships There is a possibility that the Commonwealth Junior and Youth Championships will be held in Penang, Malaysia from the 18th to 22nd December. The CWF General Secretary will visit Penang this month and meet with the Malaysian officials and in particular Dato Ong. By the end of July a firm decision will be made as to whether this event will proceed in conjunction with another international event. The Senior Commonwealth Championships will not be held this year due to the Commonwealth Games. The 2011 Commonwealth Senior, Junior and Youth Championships will be held in South Africa. All details about this championships will be given out at the Congress in Delhi. Dato Ong Poh Eng -Malaysia CWF- Vice President

Gold Coast bidding for 2018 On the 31 of March the Queensland Premier Ann Bligh in partnership with the Gold Coast City Council, and with an official endorsement from the Australian Commonwealth Games Association, launched the Gold Coast’s bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Sam Coffa, President of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association and Vice President of the IWF was at the official announcement with the Premier of Queensland, Anne Bligh and the Mayor of the Gold Coast, Mr. Ron Clarke, one of Australia’s greatest Athlete.

New Positions Tonga - The Tonga Weightlifting Federation held its General meeting and Mr.Viliami Tu’amoheloa was elected as the new President. Mr Michael Bloomfield was elected as the new Secretary General. The coaching position remains the same with Mr Maamaloa Lolohea for many years Tongan best lifter representing Tonga at Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Congratulations to the new board and look forward to see Tonga at forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Turks & Caicos Islands The Turks & Caicos Weightlifting Federation also held a general meeting ,with Mr .Edwin Astwood became the new President. Also the Federation has a new general secretary in Mr Michael Francois. We wish Turks & Caicos Islands all the success with the new team and look forward also to see them at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.

Ghana The Ghana Weightlifting Association has recently held its general meeting. The President elected was Mr Nii Lantey Vanderjuve, whilst the Secretary General Mr Hussein Akueteh Addy was once again re-elected to his position. Ghana won a gold medal at the and I am sure that they are looking forward to further success at the next Commonwealth Games in Delhi. We wish the team and officials all the very best.

London visit The General Secretary of the CWF, Paul Coffa, was invited to London by Matthew Curtain, the Weightlifting Manager for the London Olympics. He visited the weightlifting venue, accommodation and the LOCOG headquarters. He also paid a visit to the Commonwealth Games Federation headquarters where he met John Eades (Operation Director –CGF) and had a fruitful discussion on the sport of weightlifting and the Commonwealth Games. Matthew Curtain who is also the Assistant Secretary of the CWF accompanied Paul Coffa together with Ronald Frere, IWF Executive Board Member.
