Historic Assynt Welcome to Highland Archaeology Festival 2021 Fàilte gu Fèis Arc-eòlais na Gàidhealtachd 2021

We are very pleased to be able to bring you a packed programme for our 2021 Festival. This includes plenty of new events and covers areas that we haven’t reached before so I hope you are ready to get outside and explore. We aim to celebrate our shared history and archaeology and showcase the incredible heritage on our doorstep as well as the importance of protecting this for future generations. The educational and economic benefits that this can bring to communities cannot be overstated. The council is not yet able to bring you a conference in person, as had been hoped, but building on last year’s Festival of Talks, we have again produced a programme of excellent online talks which will run over weekday lunchtimes and evenings throughout the three weeks of the festival. Our Festival of Talks last year allowed us to reach out to new audiences – and include new speakers – from across the world, as well as those of you living in the Highlands who may never have been able to attend in person. We are encouraged that this is an approach we will continue to include for future years. Our focus is again on recent discoveries and research, but we will also have a themed session on Tourism and Heritage as well as the launches of the Highland Regional Research Framework, the extended Pictish Trail and the long-awaited publication of the internationally important excavation at Culduthel. New research is being carried out daily by both local groups and universities as well as in advance of construction. Highland Council is committed to making the results of this work available, either through our award-winning Historic Environment Record (HER) website or through our programme of events for the festival. I would like to thank all our event organisers for their time, imagination and effort as the festival would not be possible without them. Tha mi a’ guidhe fèis air leth soirbheachail is tlachdmhor dhuibh. I wish you all a very successful and enjoyable festival.

From the Highland Council Historic Environment Team While planning this year’s festival, uncertainty still remains concerning Covid regulations, for both event organisers and museums. Numbers may have to be limited at some events, so please check with the organisers if in any doubt. We’re delighted that we could produce a full programme this year, with the conference talks still taking place online. Please look after this brochure as it will be the final one printed before we move the festival programme online plus a printed flyer! We would like to thank Historic Environment Scotland for supporting the festival this year.
