Rapier, Maintenance Supervisor Master Sergeant U.S. Air Force (38 years of service) GENERAL manager “Our nation has long stood as a beacon of hope and opportunity, and few embody that spirit here at home and beyond our borders more than the members of our Armed Forces.” Michael Hursh, Staff Sergeant U.S. Air Force & California Air National Guard FEATURED speaker manager U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Keni Thomas was deployed to Mogadishu Somalia, with Bravo Company of the 3rd Ranger Battalion, as part of a special operations package called Task Force Ranger. Their October 1993 mission was to find and capture a criminal warlord named Mohammed Farrah Aideed. During an extraction, Thomas and his fellow Rangers were caught in an 18 hour fire fight that ultimately claimed the lives of 19 Americans and wounded 78 others. It was the worst urban combat battle since WWII and would later be recounted in the highly successful book and movie Black Hawk Down. SSG Thomas now draws from his personal experiences from Keni Thomas that battle to speak about the importance of leadership in everyday life. U.S. Army Staff Sergeant SSG Thomas did not want a young machine gunner named Private David Floyd in his Ranger unit. However, Pte. Floyd became a hero in the “Black Hawk Down” battle when he saved the lives of Thomas and several soldiers by taking out the enemy moments before his Ranger unit would have likely been killed. “When someone is not as good as us we have a tendency to put distance between us.” “There are people to your left and to your right who are counting on you and it’s up to you to deliver. But you will only be as good as you prepared yourself to be.” To our Veterans & Active Service Members… We Thank You AC Transit collectively wishes to thank: Staff Sargent Keni Thomas U.S. Army Reserve 2nd Medical Brigade Color Guard (San Pablo, CA) AC Transit’s Veteran’s Day Committee The Training & Education Center AC Transit’s Facilities Staff AC Transit’s Information Technology Staff AC Transit’s Print Shop AC Transit’s Second Annual commemoration of Veteran’s Day was captured on video. Black Hawk Down A Story of Modern War by Mark Bowden, 1951- Published: 1999 J J J J J I I I I I Table of Contents Dedication & The Assault Black Hawk Down Overrun The Alamo N.S.D.Q. Epilogue Sources Acknowledgements J J J J J I I I I I For my mother, Rita Lois Bowden, and in memory of my father, Richard H. Bowden It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting the ultimate practitioner. Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian The Assault 1 At liftoff, Matt Eversmann said a Hail Mary. He was curled into a seat between two helicopter crew chiefs, the knees of his long legs up to his shoulders. Before him, jammed on both sides of the Black Hawk helicopter, was his „chalk,“ twelve young men in flak vests over tan desert camouflage fatigues. He knew their faces so well they were like brothers. The older guys on this crew, like Eversmann, a staff sergeant with five years in at age twenty-six, had lived and trained together for years. Some had come up together through basic training, jump school, and Ranger school. They had traveled the world, to Korea, Thailand, Central America … they knew each other better than most brothers did. They‘d been drunk together, gotten into fights, slept on forest floors, jumped out of airplanes, climbed mountains, shot down foaming rivers with their hearts in their throats, baked and frozen and starved together, passed countless bored hours, teased one another endlessly about girlfriends or lack of same, driven out in the middle of the night from Fort Benning to retrieve each other from some diner or strip club out on Victory Drive after getting drunk and falling asleep or pissing off some barkeep.

Get It On! What It Means to Lead the Way by Keni Thomas ABOUT THE BOOK “Three words. That’s all it took. I was writing a letter home to my mom when the call rang out across the American compound: ‘Get it on!’ And just like that, the course of my life changed forever.” Decorated U.S. military veteran-turned-country musician Keni Thomas gives a personal account of his heart-wrenching experiences in the chaotic 1993 Battle of Mogadishu to express a unique set of leadership lessons and inspired view of our greater purpose. Get It On! reminds readers “that we, as individuals, do indeed matter, that we are anything but ordinary, fully capable of carrying out life-changing assignments at any level and in any situation. We can make a difference in this world.” Carrying a guitar now rather than a rifle, Keni also shares stories from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry to overseas concerts for active soldiers, always passionate about the battle that “still shapes my thoughts on a daily basis” and eager to encourage the absolute best in those who are willing to answer Release Date: October 1, 2011 whatever call God places on their lives.
