Mayor’s Welcome

As Mayor of the , I am honoured to be hosting the tenth Armed Forces Day on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council.

Our event is one of hundreds held across the country and we have many opportunities for you here today to say ‘Thank You’ to currently serving troops, service families, veterans and cadets. This year we welcome the Yorkshire Regiment who are “meeting & greeting” you around the event site – so do have a chat with them and show them a ‘Warm Scarborough Welcome’.

We should remember that 100 years ago the First World War ended and a new world began. In 2018 we say a special ‘Thank You’ to the many men, women and children who lost their lives both in service and on the home front. To show your thanks make a poppy at the Stories of Remembrance project stall here today or join in a workshop (see page 10).

Also this year, the Royal Air Force celebrate their 100th birthday. To mark this occasion, we welcome RAF Fylingdales, 739 Air Cadets and veteran personnel as they ‘Commemorate, Celebrate and Inspire’ their achievements. Our charity collection will contribute to RAF100, Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund and Royal Marines Association - in memory of our much missed standard bearer for Scarborough Royal Marines Association and valued local community activist, Mr Clive Linton RM.

We have opened a Book of Remembrance for the veterans we have lost over the last 10 years who enjoyed attending our event. I invite you to honour their memory by adding your own dedication. The Book of Remembrance signing points are shown on the map overleaf. They will also be available at the Town Hall until 11 November 2018.

The success of the day can be attributed to the many services of the Council and the amazing support of volunteers who work tirelessly to make this day special, without them this event would not be possible. I would also like to thank all sponsors, in particular our main funding partner the Ministry of Defence and the South Bay Traders Association.

I hope you will enjoy this special day and say “Thank you” to our Armed Services personnel, past, present and future.

Welcome Tender Comrade

Hymn What will you do when the war is over, tender comrade O God, our help in ages past, A thousand ages in Thy sight When we lay down our weary guns Our hope for years to come, Are like an evening gone; When we return home to our wives and families Our shelter from the stormy blast, Short as the watch that ends the night And look into the eyes of our sons And our eternal home; Before the rising sun. What will you say of the bond we had, tender comrade Will you say that we were brave Under the shadow of Thy throne Time, like an ever rolling stream, As the shells fell all around us Thy saints have dwelt secure; Bears all its sons away; Or that we wept and cried for our mothers Sufficient is Thine arm alone, They fly forgotten, as a dream And cursed our fathers And our defence is sure. Dies at the opening day. For forgetting that all men are brothers

Before the hills in order stood, O God, our help in ages past, Will you say that we were heroes Or earth received her frame, Our hope for years to come, Or that fear of dying among strangers From everlasting Thou art God, Be Thou our guard while troubles last, Tore our innocence and false shame away To endless years the same. And our eternal home. And from that moment on deep in my heart I knew That I would only give my life for love

STORIES OF REMEMBRANCE To mark the centenary of armistice, a series of community artworks will be on display in Scarborough, and . Life sized wire sculptures surrounded by poppies will feature at remembrance events in each town, accompanied by a soundscape of original poetry and individual’s reflections inspired by the centenary that will be available online throughout November.

The sculptures are being made by local company Animated Objects, who will be working in the community throughout the summer to create fabric poppies that will feature as part of the artworks.
