Sonic booms have become as acceptable locally as grits for breakfast. However, there still is some controversy as to whether "there's a lot of shaking going on." To settle the ques- tion scientifically and let the subject rest during future coffee breaks, the Sallyport editor made a trip to the geology building to view Rice's seismograph equipment which records earth move- ments. The equipment, outstanding for its sensitivity, can record earthquakes which occur thousands of miles from Houston. Jean Michel, seismograph technician, confirmed movement of the earth in this area folllowing a sonic boom. The average movement as recorded by the seismograph is less than 1/1000th of an inch and is timed at about 20 seconds. The close and rapid movement of the seismograph needle after the boom makes a resembling an ink blot on the chart. definite impression points out fecordings Rice's seismograph equipment is described as the capacitive JEAN MICHEL, seismograph technician, the movement of the earth type.
