Absinthe Tasting Quantity: 6 This is a sublime opportunity to try something that was once illegal but is now perfectly legal. Absinthe gets its name from wormwood (artesian absinthium), a powerful agent against intestinal parasites. Created as medicine in the late 18th century, it became the Belle Epoque aperitif par excellence. Banned in many countries in the early 20th century, it has enjoyed a renaissance since being legalized in the EU in the 90s and in the US in 2007. On TBD, you will sample a selection of French, Swiss and American absinthes, accompanied by enough hors d'oeuvres to keep you more or less upright. Your host, Mark Arnest, will teach you the absinthe ritual and some absinthe history and lore and give you guidance for further study. Mark has been an absintheur since 2005 and wrote a comprehensive Gazette article about absinthe after its legalization. Caveat No. 1: If you do not like, or at least tolerate, the taste of licorice, you probably will not enjoy absinthe. Caveat No. 2: Despite its reputation, absinthe does not have any extraordinary psychoactive effects. It is, however, extremely alcoholic (but not enough to keep you from enjoying Saturday).
