SATURDAY, MAY TWENTY-FIFTH TWO THOUSAND NINETEEN A Farewell to the Seniors

I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to you and your families on the occasion of your graduation from Marist College.

When you enrolled at Marist, you joined a community of faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni dedicated to helping you develop the intellect, character, and skills required to lead enlightened and productive lives. Since then, you have received a world-class education, and you can be extremely proud of all you have achieved. You have learned to think critically and creatively, solve complex problems, express your ideas, and conduct meaningful research. You have actively engaged with the world around you, whether through study abroad, internships, or service to others. You have questioned assumptions, considered important ethical questions, and honed your leadership skills. Above all, you have assembled the intellectual tools and professional skills to succeed in the global community of the 21st century.

Each one of you has made the College a better place with your hard work, unique perspective, and individual talents, but it is now time to look ahead. The world you are entering is rapidly changing, increasingly complex, and multicultural. It is a place of both great challenge and great opportunity. The years you have spent at Marist have provided you with the foundation to meet these challenges and take full advantage of the opportunities that await you. Just as important, I hope your Marist education has reinforced in you a commitment to serve others, particularly the less fortunate in our society.

A strong sense of community is one of the College’s core values, so as we say goodbye to you as undergraduates, we welcome you back to the Marist family as alumni. You are now stakeholders in our institution, and your continued involvement will be vital to our growth and development. I look forward to seeing you at future Marist events and to your lifelong engagement with your alma mater.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019 and best of luck in all of your future endeavors!

Sincerely,

David Yellen President

Honorary Degree Recipient William Kaplan

In 2010 William Kaplan opened the Newburgh Armory Unity Center (NAUC) to give kids a place to be safe and play basketball and soccer. What he never saw coming was the evolution of an educational institution that would become a national model creating a paradigm shift in early education. It began with two goals, eliminating poverty through education and being sure that children could read on grade level by the third grade. Mandatory parental involvement assures continued success.

Over the last nine years, as founder/chairman, he has overseen the creation of a groundbreaking collaboration between the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, Marist College, Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital, Mount Saint Mary College, SUNY Orange, and SUNY New Paltz, among others. Each week more than 500 students and parents attend this go-to program to give their children an opportunity to improve their educational pathway. With 40-plus course offerings each week, students and their parents receive instruction in a variety of topics ranging from literacy to avionics. The award-winning Scholars in Scrubs® healthcare/nursing class is paving the way for our K thru Career® program featuring early exposure to professions in need of workforce for future careers and employment.

Marist, an independent, comprehensive college grounded in the liberal arts, is located on a 210-acre riverfront campus in New York’s Hudson River Valley. The College enrolls approximately 5,000 traditional-age undergraduates, 400 adult undergraduate students, and 1,000 graduate students, offering 47 undergraduate majors and 14 graduate degree programs including online M.B.A., M.P.A., M.S., and M.A. programs and a Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Marist’s Florence, Italy, campus offers four-year bachelor’s degree programs in partnership with Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici—the only U.S. bachelor’s degree program in Florence. Additionally, the Florence campus offers a master’s degree in museum studies.

This spring Marist opened a location on Fifth Avenue in . The 20,000-square-foot space serves as a central hub for innovative academic offerings for graduate, adult, undergraduate, and corporate programs.

A $75 million gift from Raymond A. Rich, one of the 20th century’s leading businessmen, established the Raymond A. Rich Institute for Leadership Development at Marist. The gift included the Colonel Oliver Hazard Payne Mansion, a historic 60-acre estate in Esopus, New York, overlooking the Hudson River.

In 2018, Sprout Creek Farm transferred control of its operations to Marist. The 200-acre farm is known for its educational programs, summer camp, and award-winning cheeses.

77Marist is included in the Princeton Review’s Colleges That Create Futures: 50 Schools That Launch Careers By Going Beyond the Classroom (2018).

77Marist is recognized for academic excellence by the Princeton Review (“The Best 384 Colleges 2018”), U.S. News & World Report (“Best Regional Universities,” Northern; “Best Online Education Programs”), Forbes (“America’s Top Colleges” and “Best Value Colleges”), and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance (“Best Values in Private Colleges”).

77Marist prepares its students well for life after graduation. Data for the class of 2018 show that 98 percent are employed or attending graduate school.

77Eighty-three percent of students participate in one or more internships during their time at Marist.

77Marist ranks 7th in the U.S. for long-term study abroad, according to the IIE’s Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange.

77The Marist Center for Sports Communication prepares students to excel in one of society’s most far-reaching disciplines. Activities include publishing the student-run Center Field website, which covers Marist athletics, and an all-student sports podcast network. It also hosts a speaker series, most recently featuring ESPN and FOX Sports personalities Pablo Torre and Alexi Lalas, and presents the Lifetime Excellence in Sports Communication Award, previously won by Bryant Gumbel and Hannah Storm.

77Marist is home to the Hudson River Valley Institute (HRVI), a nationally recognized history and regional studies center.
