EXHIBITION: RIGA AS A PART OF RUSSIA. 1710-MID-19TH CENTURY 05.01.-30.12. 11:00-17:00 (III-VII) The exhibition is about Riga and its inhabitants in the 18th and the first half of the 19th century. Its objective is clearer understanding of the development of Riga within the context of Russian and European history. EXHIBITION: DOME MUSEUM - TEMPLE OF SCIENCE AND ART 05.01.-30.12. 11:00-17:00 (III-VII) The exhibition is dedicated to the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation. The origins of the museum go back to 1773; however, focus here is on the period of the Dome Museum (1890-1936), with particular emphasis on the contribution from the so-called Baltic Ger- mans in the preservation of Latvia’s cultural treasures, and their fate during the Second World War. PHOTOGRAPHY: 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF LATVIAN RIFLEMEN BATTALIONS 01.07.-25.10. To commemorate the foundation of Riflemen battalions in the summer of 1915, and to honor their role in the history of Latvia, the National History Museum of Latvia is offering a new exhibition featuring the most striking photographs from the museum’s collection depicting the formation, the most important battles and daily life of a rifleman. INESE BRANTS’ SOLO EXHIBIT "LOVE FOR LIFE. HAND-PAINTED PORCELAIN" 14.08.-04.10. 11:00-18:00 (II-VII) Inese Brants is one of the most brilliant Latvian ceramists, especially with regard to hand-painted porcelain. She is a rare breed as an academician, delving into her field scientifically and theoretically. AUTUMN CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL. SOLO CONCERT BY ANTONINA SUHANOVA, PIANO MUSIC FROM FRANCE AND RUSSIA 01.10. 19:30 This recital by Antonina Suhanova is the prize she won at the 6th International Jāzeps Vītols Piano Competition, where she was named the best interpreter of the composer’s music. "Framest" vocal ensemble in concert

WINTER-WEAR ON PARADE IN RIGA ZOO 01.-11.10. 10:00-18:00; 12.10.-30.12. 10:00-16:00 Animals are already preparing warm fur coats for winter. For many species they differ from summer attire, which is why autumn is a special time at Riga Zoo – like a magic trick, new inhabitants have appeared. In the summer, the brown lynx family has now become gray, while camels, raccoon, and many other animals are taking pride in their thick furs, and thus, are now much larger. AUTUMN CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL. MEDITATION IN SOUND: JOHN CAGE 07.10. 19:00 Juris Žvikovs has studied and performed music by the American composer, free thinker and conceptualist John Cage, and is rightly considered an expert. He is one of the few pianists in the world to have learned Cage’s unusual cycle of sonatas and interludes, which a critic has dubbed an "extensive masterpiece with a quieted voice." LNSO CONCERT MASTERS. OBOE AND TUBA 08.10. 19:00 The lively and buoyant pianist Agnese Egliņa continues to "draw portraits" of the LNSO’s concert masters. This time out, she will perform with masters of two absolutely different wind instruments. Egils Upatnieks plays the oboe, and the oboe is what gives the orchestra its tone. This tone also dictates how the orchestra sounds. This part of the concert will be presented by Upatnieks. Mean- while, Raivis Māgurs, and his tuba, serves as "fundamente" for the orchestra.
