Welcome

A warm welcome to everyone in this December-January edition of Woodnesborough Village News. We hope you enjoy reading the magazine, even though there are very few events we can publicise in the current pandemic situation.

Let’s hope 2021 will bring us more good cheer and that we really can say ‘Happy New Year’ and mean it.

For details of services at Woodnesborough Church and other churches in the Benefice please see pages 4 and 5.

Please pop down and see the Christmas tree outside the Village Hall which will be lit on Friday 11th December.

In this Christmas-New Year edition we have a lot of useful local information, a festive quiz, a Dingbats page and the final chance to find Woodnesborough’s smallest resident… get your magnifying glass out! Woodnesborough Wilf will be moving on to pastures new next year as he has finally had enough of hiding the pages of this magazine and has made a break for freedom – where will he turn up next?

The next edition of the magazine will be in February 2021 after our short winter hibernation. We hope 2021 will bring forth more contributions to the magazine: articles, events, poems, shared memories, quizzes, recipes, photos, etc. Please send material to:

We welcome anything you would like to send us that you think people might find interesting, by the 15th of the month.

Village Hall update

As with many other small businesses this has been a testing time for the Village Hall committee. At our last meeting we set an emergency budget to see us through to mid-2021. Our secretary, Christine, and our treasurer, Jon, have worked hard to find ways to trim our costs. Our building has essential costs for utilities, insurance and other necessary expenses. For the time that we were able to reopen we achieved only around 50% of our normal income as many of our hirers were unable to return and all functions were not allowed. We were grateful for grants of £13,000 from DC and CCC and for fundraising and generous donations in the past.

We look forward to a time when we can reopen fully and everyone can begin to use again the wonderful facilities that we have. We ask for your support and encourage you to consider using Woodnesborough Village Hall, when we reopen, whenever you can.

Now that we have been placed in tier 3 this may not be for some time so we will update you in the February magazine.

Ken Flower (Chairman)

Village Christmas Tree

This year we have decided that we will have a Christmas Tree in the grounds of the Village Hall.

It will be lit up for the first time on Friday 11th December at 6pm and every evening from 4pm until 9pm until 5th January.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to gather as a crowd, but we hope that you will find an opportunity to visit with your family or in your bubble.

A very special thank you to Woodnesborough Gardeners Club for sponsoring the Christmas Tree this year

Notes from St Mary’s

Will Christmas be cancelled in 2020?

The big caveat, as I write this letter in mid-November, is that I have no idea how things may turn out over the next fortnight – let alone into December! Will the lockdown end at the beginning of December? Will it be extended? Will new restrictions be in place?

By the time anyone is reading this, the answers will be known, or at least be much clearer, but for now a little speculation will do no harm.

It is no surprise that the pagan festivals, which were adopted by the Christian faith in Europe, occurred around the winter solstice when the weather was at its bleakest. It was (and is) a time when folk needed a bit of a celebration to raise spirits and look forward to brighter times to come. Certainly no exception this year.

So, today, the celebration of Christmas is an important time for us all. We delight in Christmas because it is an opportunity to get together as family and friends, to express our value of each, to forget our troubles and to look forward – at least that is how it should be.

So, the emergence of the virus, and the threat that our usual celebrations may not be possible – at least in the way we have come to expect – gives rise to a genuine sense of unease for us. It is not just the potential loss of an important time of gathering, but also the real uncertainty that we currently face and the difficulty in planning anything.

But coronavirus has also taught us that we can look at things differently and that there can be unexpected benefits. We have found that, in our local communities, we can look out more for the lonely and vulnerable and respond to their needs; we have discovered that we can use empty rooms to house the homeless; we have ensured that our foodbanks are well resourced; we have learned that we can pollute less and breathe cleaner air.

COVID-19 has reminded us that great wealth does not assure us of security, or that great power can fend off every threat; but it has also shown us that we may dare to hold a vision for the future which is different. Once the real threat has passed, it will be tempting to return to our old securities and try to hold on to what was once safe. But our eyes have now been opened to different possibilities, which require courageous faithful thought and bold faithful action. We have been offered the vision of a world of generous, neighbourly compassion – and we need to grasp it. This coronavirus, for all its unwelcome and damaging consequences, has also necessitated us to examine again old certainties which in turn has the potential to open new and hopeful futures.

8

So, as we look forward to our Christmas celebrations, they may well not turn out as we would have anticipated them to be last year. It does not mean that Christmas is cancelled; it does allow us to think carefully about why the celebration of Christmas is special. If it transpires to be a little less of a consumerist frenzy, and a little more of an open awareness of neighbours and friends, then the changes necessitated by this dreadful virus might just prove to have had a beneficial and perhaps lasting impact on us for the good. In the meantime, may this Christmastide for you be a time of joy, peace and hope.

Poem of the Month

Christmas Carol

The kings they came from out the south, All dressed in ermine fine; They bore Him gold and chrysoprase, And gifts of precious wine.

The shepherds came from out the north, Their coats were brown and old; They brought Him little new-born lambs - They had not any gold.

The wise men came from out the east, And they were wrapped in white; The star that led them all the way Did glorify the night.

The angels came from heaven high, And they were clad with wings; And lo, they brought a joyful song The host of heaven sings.

The kings they knocked upon the door, The wise men entered in, The shepherds followed after them To hear the song begin.

The angels sang through all the night Until the rising sun, But little Jesus fell asleep Before the song was done.

Woodnesborough Parish Council

With the continuing concern regarding the coronavirus the Parish Council met via Zoom again on 27th October, and we received apologies from Cllr Cynthia Charter and also County Cllr Sue Chandler. There were no members of the public present.

Following the declarations of interest, the minutes of the last meeting were approved and actions from that meeting were updated. We also noted the coronavirus updates sent to us.

We discussed 2 planning applications, both of which we supported. There were 2 planning decisions received from DDC which we noted. We also received confirmation that the breach of planning permission regarding the routing of lorries to the site on Sandwich Road, brought to Cllr Vine’s attention by parishioners, had been dealt with.

County Cllr Chandler had sent out a written report prior to the meeting which we had read, as had District Cllr Holloway. No councillors had attended meetings.

We were notified of several local road closures, including New Street Ash and Road. We also discussed the possible Stopping up Order for Each End.

Our next meeting is on 8th December as we do not meet in November to avoid a meeting at Christmas, and we will continue to use the virtual meeting room as we are unsure if a return to the hall immediately is wise.

The full minutes are available on the council website and please remember we are your Council so come along to any of our meetings. You can contact our Clerk, Jo Jones for details, and if you wish to raise any concerns you may have regarding the parish, please let our clerk know prior to the meeting. May I take this opportunity to wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas on behalf of the Parish Council.

Birding With Big Nick

I ended my last article by saying that I’d missed the Red-backed Shrike seen on Worth Marshes but I hoped one day I would see one in the UK. Well, I got my chance in October when a juvenile turned up at St Mary’s Bay. It was very confiding, and so I was able to get some good photos. They perch on a wire or branch and watch for their prey, flying down to grab a beetle, grasshopper or even small lizard; this one caught a wasp while I was watching. It was an interesting autumn for me with some scarce visitors to the area, but more on this later.

Juvenile Red - backed Shrike Eating a wasp

It will be winter by the time you are reading this and the garden birds will be spending most of their daylight hours finding food to fuel them through the long, cold nights. Bird feeders are an important source of food for many of our regular garden visitors. I listened to someone on the radio a while ago; he said that feeding the birds was ridiculous, that they had managed perfectly well for thousands of years without help from us. Possibly a valid point but in reality he didn’t mention that the world the birds live in now is a much different place to even 100 years ago. Changes to agricultural practices, the necessity for new homes and more roads have all reduced the availability of habitat and food sources for many of our native species. So I don’t think supplementing their food supply is at all ridiculous and it should be encouraged. In return many of us will get pleasure in seeing and hearing the birds that take advantage of it.

Great Tit Long Tailed Tit Robin

16

I mentioned earlier that it had been a good autumn for me as a birder; one species I’ve wanted to see but have never had the opportunity to, is the Wryneck, a bird of the woodpecker family, slightly smaller than a Starling. It no longer breeds in the UK and is now only a passage migrant with fewer than 300 recorded each year. Sightings of one at Swalecliffe were all I needed; I drove there and was lucky enough to locate and photograph it - I returned a happy man!

Have a good festive season, wherever you are and stay safe.

The W I had hoped to have a socially distanced tea at Preston at the end of November but due to the new lockdown we are still unable to meet at this moment in time. It is hoped that we will be able to get together again in the future. Unfortunately, it is all a bit uncertain in the current climate, but we hope that you will all have a good Christmas.

Love in a Box

Mustard Seed Mission

On the first Saturday in November Bob and I drove through the woods to Baptist Church. It was a wonderful sunny autumn day and the trees were at their very best.

We arrived as instructed at about 10.30 with our cargo of 25 beautifully filled shoe boxes which will soon be taken to children in Romania. There were several other cars arriving and their Pastor helped us all unload.

Thank you for making such an effort this year as shopping has been quite difficult.

Thank you to the lady who filled 6 boxes, to Brewers shop in Sandwich who gave us boxes, to Rose and Tony’s shop assistant who helped us choose suitable items from their toy department. Also, we would like to thank Eastry Pharmacy who collect their hairbands and clips etc. for us throughout the year. We do hope that the children enjoy their boxes and that they will arrive in Romania safely and on time.

Thank you again from the Mustard Seed Mission.

Free Safety Door Stickers

Able Community Care is a Norfolk home care company established in 1980 and now provides care 24/7 throughout the UK and beyond.

We continually read news/articles flagging up the activities of Doorstep Criminals: fraudulent roofers, gardeners, service officials and other non- genuine visitors who target older people. Over the years we have also had first -hand evidence from our own clients and carers.

As a company we have decided to see if we can help prevent this on a small scale and so we have had the Door Safety Sticker (attached) to give away to older people. To date we have sent out 60,000 upon request, since February 2019.

If you would like to have one, please ring us on 01603 764567 or email [email protected].

We will not keep your details other than to send out the door sticker to you.

Volunteers to help find the vaccine for COVID-19

Join the national effort and sign up for the NHS COVID-19 vaccine research registry. Be part of the fightback against the virus by volunteering to be contacted by researchers to take part in COVID-19 vaccine research.

There are a number of vaccines being identified, but only large-scale studies can give researchers the information needed about how effective they are.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is working with the NHS and aims to recruit as many people as possible onto the registry, which will allow people to be put in touch with the vaccine studies in the coming months.

Researchers are looking for people from all backgrounds, ages and parts of the UK - including both people with or without existing health conditions - to take part in vaccine studies, to make sure that any vaccines developed will work for everyone.

The service is available to anyone aged 18 or over, living in the UK. There is no obligation to join in any study, if you are contacted. But by taking part, you could help researchers find vaccines to protect us all more quickly - which in turn could help the NHS and save lives.

Sign up today!

Please let me know if you are able to help. If you have any questions about the registry please do not hesitate to ask me, and if you would like information about vaccines, visit our website https://bepartofresearch.nihr.ac.uk/ vaccine-studies/

Thank you in advance for your help.

There was a slight increase this month 149 in total, these were mainly made up of people calling in for concern for welfare and missing people. The amount of calls are varied and these are mainly centred around Sandwich. Woodnesborough has a low volume of calls and crime, also no calls this month regarding anti-social behaviour.

Regular Patrolling is always on going in the area, I work day and night shifts so if you haven’t seen me yet, rest assured I am at some stage patrolling.

Although we won’t be holding our usual AGM this year, we will be sending out a newsletter to all members in the coming weeks, advising them of the planned programme for next year, once restrictions have been lifted. We will also include details of our financial accounts. This information will be sent by email, where possible, or by post if we do not have an email address. The Club’s new email address is [email protected] and you can also reach me by telephone on 01304 812373.

We are a non-profit making organisation whose underlying purpose is to help maintain a vibrant cohesive community spirit. As such it is vital that it truly reflects the voice of Woodnesborough and we welcome items from all village organisations and individuals.

Woodnesborough Village News is produced and distributed by volunteers with financial support provided by a partnership of St Mary’s Church, the Village Hall Committee and the Parish Council. This combined with the additional funding provided by advertising, enables us to offer the magazine free to the community.
