20 Benefice News Supporting your local churches When we moved into the vicarage last November we treated ourselves to new white goods; our existing oven, fridge, and the J P Accounting like were all pretty old, anyway, and possibly wouldn’t have survived the move. The new ones made wonderful claims about Solutions their energy efficiency and water saving. Hi-tech stuff, indeed, and our new appliances were duly installed. Everything in the kitchen looked pretty slick. An accountant working to your budget Book keeping, Accounts VAT, Payroll, Tax returns CIS, Company Secretarial Sadly, things went a bit downhill from there, and a day or two Budgeting, Management Accounts before Christmas, I found that my large roasting tin wouldn’t fit into Company Formations the oven. If you saw a borderline-hysterical woman running round Periodic Accounts Sainsburys on Christmas Eve with a measuring tape and a Year end accounts notebook, it was me trying to find a new roasting tin that would fit both the oven and the turkey! [email protected] 01964 562121

When I got home, I realized that the oven was the same size as the 07754 067941 old one, outside, so if the inside was smaller, then the walls must be thicker. Great, more insulation to keep the heat in. But that isn’t clever, it’s not hi-tech or modern; it’s the equivalent of putting on a cardie to stop yourself getting cold. No one boasts about that.

Disappointing though it is to realise that your new hi-tech, energy- efficient oven is just like your old one with a cardie on, I think it illustrates something pretty universal: our tendency to overestimate our own virtues and strengths and, even more, to underestimate other people’s. But that’s not how it is with God: God appreciates everyone’s strengths and our virtues, no matter how small. And I’m pretty sure that he has no trouble forgiving us when we, too, try to pass off our old cardie as an on-trend statement knit. Rev Sue
