ASCAcut paper 6/15/16, 10:12 AM TO HEAL THE GAP BETWEEN SUBJECT AND PROTAGONIST: RESTORING FEMALE AGENCY WITH IMMERSION AND INTERACTIVITY Paper for ASCA Mini-Conference June 8, 2001, Amsterdam By Alison McMahan, Ph.D. Mieke Bal, in her book Reading "Rembrandt", critiques the so-called universalism of the myth genre of storytelling because this claim to universalism conceals the split between "the subject who tells the story about itself and the subject it tells about." (Mieke Bal, "Visual Story-Telling: Father and |Son and the Problem of Myth." From Reading "Rembrandt": Beyond the Word-Image Opposition, New York, Cambridge University Press, 1991,p.98). In her articulation of the differences between the latter two terms and her analysis of visuality in the literary accounts and of the Rembrandt images, Bal shows us how the method of discourse separates protagonist from subject, specifically, the female subject, and makes the role of protagonist inaccessible for other females. The voyeuristic spectator is invited into a position of internal focalization in Rembrandt’s etching, which incriminates the spectator, though she be female and feminist, into a site of “interpretants shaped by a male habit.” There are two solutions: the awareness created by an against-the-grain analysis, such as Kaja Silverman’s “productive looking” or to change how the story is told. Feminine agency, (“feminine” here is defined as the socially constructed ideas attached to the female sex. Poststructuralists feminists deconstruct texts in order to make explicit the power relations that structure discourse), on earth or between the pages, cannot be restored unless the gap between subject and protagonist is healed and re-adressed.

  • Bill's Guide to Week Two of the 47Th Annual Chicago International Film
Bill’s Guide to Week Two of the 47th Annual Chicago International Film Festival By Bill Stamets Special for Films for Two® My recommended films in Week Two (in “must see” order): 1.) Pina: German director Wim Wenders previously profiled Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Cuban musicians. His latest documentary introduces cinefiles to the choreography of German avant-gardist Pina Bausch. In his first use of 3-D cinematography, Wenders evokes the volume of the stage, even for performances staged in non-theatrical settings, including a tramway and an escalator. Four different works are presented. Some are revisited via archival 2-D footage. Seeing various versions adds more figurative depth to our appreciation of Bausch's work than the 3-D adds literal depth to our onscreen perception. Bausch's death during the making of the film may have lent an elegiac note to the laudatory interviews with members of her international company Tanztheater Wuppertal. They do not speak on camera during looking-into-the lens portrait sessions. The soundtrack excerpts their comments, apparently recorded off- camera, to underscore their role as voiceless dancers. Wenders channels Bausch's tactile and theoretical grasp of the body as metaphysical material for art. 2.) The Descendants: Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, Citizen Ruth) directs George Clooney as Matt King, an Hawaiian lawyer dealing with his wife hospitalized in a coma and their 10-year-old and 17- year-old daughters. Payne and his co-writers start from Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2008 novel for a truly touching male melodrama, as Clooney's character reconciles his mixed emotions about his wife.

  • Memory, History, and Entrapment in the Temporal Gateway Film
Lives in Limbo: Memory, History, and Entrapment in the Temporal Gateway Film Sarah Casey Benyahia A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies University of Essex October 2018 Abstract This thesis examines the ways in which contemporary cinema from a range of different countries, incorporating a variety of styles and genres, explores the relationship to the past of people living in the present who are affected by traumatic national histories. These films, which I’ve grouped under the term ‘temporal gateway’, focus on the ways in which characters’ experiences of temporality are fragmented, and cause and effect relationships are loosened as a result of their situations. Rather than a recreation of historical events, these films are concerned with questions of how to remember the past without being defined and trapped by it: often exploring past events at a remove through techniques of flashback and mise-en-abyme. This thesis argues that a fuller understanding of how relationships to the past are represented in what have traditionally been seen as different ‘national’ cinemas is enabled by the hybridity and indeterminacy of the temporal gateway films, which don’t fit neatly into existing categories discussed and defined in memory studies. This thesis employs an interdisciplinary approach in order to draw out the features of the temporal gateway film, demonstrating how the central protagonist, the character whose life is in limbo, personifies the experience of living through the past in the present. This experience relates to the specifics of a post-trauma society but also to a wider encounter with disrupted temporality as a feature of contemporary life.
