So Long Ago in Bordeaux – A Brief History of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac founded the Order of the Company of Mary Our Lady. Nourished by Ignatian spirituality, the sisters are contemplatives in action, with a spirit of availability like Mary Our Lady. The mission of the Company of Mary Our Lady is education in the faith that bears fruit in the works of justice.

On May 15, 1949, the Catholic Church canonized Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac as a model for young people, mothers, and apostolic women religious.

A Life-Long Path of Sanctity Jeanne de Lestonnac was born in Bordeaux, France in 1556. She was the first born of Richard de Lestonnac, a member of the city’s Parliament, and Jeanne Eyquem de Montaigne, the sister of the renowned philosopher, Michel de Montaigne. She grew up during the time when the Wars of Religion tore the country apart and her own family was divided and conflicted in its beliefs. Jeanne found two staunch supporters of the Catholic faith in her father and her uncle, Michel de Montaigne. Jeanne’s faith continued to grow in her adolescent years. It was a faith that had been tested, nurtured, and confirmed. The Spirit fed her interior growth. In her heart, she heard the words: “Do not allow the flame I have enkindled in your heart to be extinguished...” Wife and Mother Although Jeanne aspired to be a religious sister, the dangers of the religious wars were not conducive to fulfilling this desire. She married Gaston de Montferrant with whom she shared her life as his wife for 24 years and was blessed with seven children. The death of her husband and oldest son brought deep pain and sorrow. This was soon followed by the deaths of her beloved father and her uncle.

A Mystical Experience With her children grown, Jeanne once again sensed a call from God to religious life. In 1603, at the age of 46, she entered the Cistercian Convent in Toulouse. Although her desire to follow this new life was indisputable, her physical health was not able to endure the austere practices. On the night of her departure, she experienced a profound inner vision showing that God needed her for something else. She must respond to a multitude of young souls in danger of being lost. Jeanne knew deep in her heart that it was she who must extend her hand to them. In this experience Mary was also present as a source of inspiration and strength.

For Jeanne, it was a call to a two-fold commitment: to extend her hand to young people in need and to live a life inspired by the virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Foundress of the Company of Mary Our Lady After leaving the Cistercian Monastery, Jeanne began a process of discernment and reflection

6 during which time she conceived of a new religious institute that would respond to her present- day situation. Jeanne was aware of the urgent need for the education of women.

On April 7, 1607, Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac received the official approbation from the Church for the foundation of the first Religious Institute of women with a unique apostolic character and dedicated to active ministry in education. The Company of Mary Our Lady was born. Mary was key in the development of this new Religious Order and so the Order was placed under her protection.

Over the past 400 years, the Company of Mary Our Lady has grown and expanded worldwide. It is characterized by its universality and dynamism, adapting, and responding to the needs of new situations in each period of history through its service of education.

“To serve in a way that is always new.”

Vision

Our vision as a Christ-centered Catholic educational community in the charism of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac is to form youth in faith, with a critical mind and with a love of learning. This will prepare them to be instruments in the transformation of society according to Gospel values.

Integral Student Outcomes

The scholars of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School live the values and traditions of the Catholic Church through the three tenets of the charism of the Company of Mary, Our Lady. The scholars strive for and exemplify the following qualities:

To live in Mary’s company, living out the YES of Mary’s radical response to God’s call, that our students learn to recognize God’s voice and be faithful followers of Jesus.

Live Up to Your Name, That is the Name of Mary: ➢ Identify as sons and daughters of Our Lady by living out the teachings of Jesus and modeling Mary's "yes" to God's plan for their own lives.

➢ Practice the beliefs and traditions of the Catholic faith to which they were called in Baptism.

➢ Contribute to the scholastic tradition of the Catholic Church as passionate learners who demonstrate their skill and competence in a variety of disciplines.

➢ Are innovative thinkers who integrate knowledge and critical thinking.

In Saint Jeanne’s vision on the Cistercian Night, she realized that “it was she who was being called to extend a hand” to serve in the formation of young people. Our students are called to grow in awareness, sensitivity, and response to the needs around them and in our world reality, to be motivated to reach out with a loving Christ-like heart.

Extend Your Hand: ➢ Are global citizens who learn to respect the uniqueness of all people, aware that each is created in God's image.

➢ Spread the Kingdom of God by reaching out to those in need through prayer and actions.

➢ Demonstrate empathy for others.

8 Reflecting a prayer experience of Saint Jeanne in her early youth, she heard an inner voice saying, “My child, do not let the flame that I have enkindled in your heart, which moves you to love and serve me more ardently, ever die out.”

Maintain the Flame: ➢ Acknowledge the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in their lives and ignite these virtues to strengthen their moral compass.

➢ Work to the best of their ability, developing academic, artistic, physical, and social talents that enrich the whole person.

➢ Seek God in all things.

➢ Live an integrated life that balances spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional aspects.

Curriculum Overview

“To offer a Christian humanist education which, from the perspective of the dialogue between faith-justice, faith-culture, faith-science and technology, has an impact on the integral formation of persons and on the transformation of society.” - Company of Mary International Education Project

The curriculum at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School was developed with our scholars in mind. The goal was to create a course of study that prepared scholars to develop and utilize their emerging gifts and talents while engaging with others for the benefit of others. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School takes it roots in a pedagogy known for international success for over 400 years.

➢ Humanities-focused Humanities is the cornerstone of the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School curriculum. This does not mean that one simply emphasizes Science and Technology or the Arts and Literature, as we are a STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Math) learning community. Our approach is that a sound education must be balanced with each area, providing insight into the human experience. Education ultimately is at the service of humanity, and we want our scholars to become leaders who make a difference in our world no matter what career path they choose.

➢ Sustained Inquiry Learning (SIL) SIL is a learning methodology that requires students to take significant responsibility for their own learning. It is academically rigorous, requiring students to ask complex questions,

9 develop strategies for research/investigation, evaluate and analyze information, and arrive at conclusions based on evidence. Depending on the project, scholars may need to engage experts in the field and report their findings to an audience of teachers, parents, and industry leaders within the local community. The process itself and what is learned throughout have real-world application and prepare scholars for today’s workplace.

➢ Service Oriented Scholars will be required to do service hours on an individual basis and work collaboratively as a team. The program is designed to empower our scholars to make a difference. They will grow in faith and maturity, learn the importance of living in solidarity with the poor and marginalized, and develop a greater sense of community. Service projects will focus on local needs combined with opportunities abroad as part of the Company of Mary worldwide network.

➢ Dual and Concurrent Enrollment Opportunities Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School is partnering with local institutes of higher education to develop opportunities where Saint Jeanne’s juniors and seniors can take coursework that allows for college and high school credit.

➢ Online and Blended Instruction This form of instruction will permit students greater flexibility and options in personalizing their educational goals.

Education Beyond Borders

“What you see with your eyes, touches your heart.” - Anonymous

Opportunities to study abroad and involvement in mission/cultural programs are provided, not only from an academic perspective, but as life-enriching and transformative experiences.

As an international institution the Sisters of the Company of Mary are present in over 25 countries. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac School forms part of the Company of Mary International School Network. Our students, therefore, find themselves “at home” in educational institutions abroad that offer the “beyond borders” experience within the framework of familiar Gospel values and philosophy.

Opportunities for these programs can be available in various European, Asian, African, Central and South American countries.

10 School History

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac School is the only Catholic school in the Temecula Valley. The Sisters of the Company of Mary founded Saint Jeanne School as a preschool and kindergarten in October 1993 as part of the Viña Ministry Center. In September 1999, the school relocated to its present site and encompassed pre-school through eighth grade. The first eighth grade class graduated in the year 2000. In September 2001, the construction of the new theater and gymnasium was completed.

In 2007, the Sisters of the Company of Mary Our Lady celebrated the 400th anniversary of the foundation of the Order by our foundress, Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac in Bordeaux, France. In 2016, the Company of Mary celebrated 90 years of presence in the United States. Today we continue the mission first given to Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac, the education of youth.

Over the last 20 years, the dream to build a Catholic high school in the Temecula Valley was addressed by parent and parish groups desiring a means to extend a faith-filled education beyond the elementary years. The Company of Mary was asked to consider this mission on several occasions. On October 7, 2015, after months of discernment and a 1½-year feasibility study, the Sisters announced their decision to take on the educational commitment to expand Saint Jeanne School through the high school years. The process of studies, permits, applications, etc., began immediately. The high school opened its doors to our pioneering youth, (Freshmen and Sophomore), The Living Stones, in August of 2018. In the spring of 2021, Most Reverend, Bishop Alberto Rojos, and members of the leadership team of the Sisters of the Company of Mary, Our Lady, lead the students and community members in a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new high school building. Construction is to begin in fall of 2021 with a tentative opening date of August 2023.

We are delighted and blessed that you are part of the Catholic educational excellence here at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic School.

Therefore, the President and Principal of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School reserve the right to refuse enrollment or re-enrollment and to require a student to withdraw when parents are deemed uncooperative by the administration or do not comply with school policies as set forth herein.

It is the duty of each host family to be fully engaged in the student’s progress, to encourage and facilitate student participation in co-curricular activities, and to participate as parents in the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School community.

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School must be informed immediately when a change of a guardian and/or host family is made. If the guardian is changing, a new, notarized, guardian

Section III School Culture

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s student culture is defined by the charism of the Order of the Sisters of the Company of Mary, Our Lady – Live Up to Your Name, Maintain the Flame, and Extend Your Hand. These three values permeate through all aspects of the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School community. In the Ignatian tradition adopted by our foundress, Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac, our students strive to live “magis” – living in greater service for the glory of God. Student and faculty interaction is based on Gospel values and scriptural teachings, in particular Christ’s call for us to love one another.

20 At Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School, students are guided in nurturing and supportive environments which stress personal responsibility as well as healthy academic and life choices. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s disciplinary code, based on restorative justice, is designed to give clear guidance on the expectations established for Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School students, which will lead to individual success and personal growth. Parents play an integral role in assuring students meet the standards set forth for becoming a successful and contributing member of the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student body culture.

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School Student Standards

Students of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School are daily representing the values imbued in the Order of the Sisters of the Company of Mary, Our Lady. These values are lived out in word and action in the following ways.

Simplicity. A Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student appreciates and celebrates the gifts of God in everyday living. The students dress in appropriate, modest attire conducive to the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School learning environment, as established in the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School Dress Code.

Compassion. A Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student supports and encourages fellow students, creating respectful and inclusive learning, co-curricular, and social environments. Each student strives to develop leadership skills including active listening, respectful communication, and life-giving action that will transform society.

Gratitude. A Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student demonstrates an attitude of gratitude for the blessings they receive. This extends from a simple expression of “thanks” to sharing their giftedness and talents to benefit the community as a whole.

Integrity. A Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student adheres to strong personal values regarding academic integrity, respect for personal property, care for the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School campus, and sincere interaction with faculty, staff, parents, and fellow students. Students possess a strong academic work ethic, striving for mastery of course material, meeting deadlines, and preparing daily for the learning opportunities presented. Leadership is paramount to student success and is a standard of excellence for all students.

Joy. A Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student understands that fullness in joy comes from a deep love of the Lord. Through this joy, the student is active in the many co- curricular activities on campus, maintains a high level of involvement in student activities, and positively supports fellow classmates in their co-curricular endeavors.

Humility. A Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student understands the awesome power of God and is humbled by God’s generous presence in their lives. As a faithful child of God, students engage in school-wide Masses, raising their voices in song and prayer, actively listening

21 to readings and homilies, and supporting a respectful environment for all to encounter Christ. Catholic students are also involved in their family’s parish, attending Mass, pursuing Confirmation, and supporting parish events. Students are expected to conduct themselves on campus and off campus, in person and online, in a manner that positively reflects the culture of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School and our Catholic Christian traditions and values.

Hospitality. A Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student “Extends a Hand” by warmly welcoming visitors to our campus. Students expand the value of hospitality by engaging in community service activities that support Catholic social teaching, that enhance the local community, and that demonstrate a commitment to the teachings of Christ. Students recognize and embrace the fact that they are the hands and feet of Christ in our local community as well as on a global level.

Building a Culture of Responsibility

High school students are growing into the responsibilities of young adulthood. Each student is capable of preparing for the needs of the day or accepting the consequence of being unprepared. Parents can assist in this growth by not bringing lunches, cell phones, assignments, etc. that students may have forgotten at home. Additionally, it is encouraged that each student purchase a planner to meet their individual organizational needs of time management, keeping track of assignments, and planning for extra-curricular activities.

In a college setting your student will need to self-advocate regarding their needs or to gain clarification. In order to build this self-advocacy skill, please allow your student to ask for assistance or clarification regarding a class, policy, or event before making the call to the High School Office or the teacher. Parents do have access to FACTS (our Student Information System) to check for important dates, deadlines, assignments, and grades.

Because your student is nearing the age of responsibility, please allow them to be responsible for their words and actions. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School is a safe environment for your student to learn the consequence of their behavior. We are here to partner with you in raising faith-filled, responsible citizens. With “growth mindset” at the forefront of all we do, students will find that making a mistake is part of the process of success. This is only effective if we allow them to make mistakes and learn how to recover from those errors. No one learns to walk without falling. Let us help our students soar!

Integral to the growth and development of the adolescents in our school is an understanding of human sexuality in the Catholic context. Recognizing the importance of this issue, Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School devotes a specific section of the Religion course each year to a presentation of this topic. Additionally, the Health and PE courses required for graduation presents units on healthy lifestyles and relationships.

22 Pregnancy

Should a student become pregnant, the school will work with the young lady and her family so as to remain at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School. We wish to affirm and support the decision to save and protect the unborn human life. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School will work directly with the student and family within the school community to support the student. The student may continue to attend school until the birth of the baby. If the doctor feels it is necessary for the student to remain at home for a prolonged period of time, the family will arrange for virtual learning/home study until the student is able to return to Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School. If the father is a student at Saint Jeanne, counseling and assistance will also be arranged to support this new responsibility.

Abortion

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School affirms the teaching of the Church that abortion is the taking of an innocent human life. If the school becomes aware that a student has procured an abortion, that student may be asked to leave the school. If the father of the child or any other student encourages or assists the mother in the procurement of an abortion, they may also be asked to leave the school.

Student Use of Facilities

The campus and facilities are for the use of the entire school community. Students are expected to accept personal and communal responsibility for the conditions of the campus and classrooms. Litter and trash should be disposed of in the appropriate trashcans and wastebaskets set out around the school. When special occasions allow for eating and drinking in the classroom, care should be taken to keep the rooms clean and to clean up after the occasion. All students must contribute to an atmosphere of pride and order. Students who do not contribute to maintaining this pride will assist in campus clean up.

Graffiti, vandalism, and lack of respect have no place in the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School community, and each student must exercise school pride and “ownership” to ensure that such activity does not occur. Parents will be financially responsible for damage done. Chewing gum is not allowed on campus.

23 Section IV Curriculum and Instruction

The curriculum at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School was developed with our scholars in mind. A curriculum committee comprised of educational professionals researched quality academic programs. The goal was to create a course of study that prepared scholars to develop and utilize their emerging gifts and talents while engaging with others for the benefit of others. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School takes it roots in a pedagogy known for international success for over 400 years.

Designed with the standards of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Congregation on Catholic Education as our guides, Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s curriculum represents a planned course of studies deliberately intended to produce a young person who is prepared academically, spiritually, and emotionally to succeed in college and as one who is transformational in society.

College Preparatory Curriculum

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School offers a college preparatory curriculum designed to assist all students to achieve at their highest level. We recognize that students have varying strengths, interests, and abilities, and we strive to address these differences to maximize student success. We have developed a variety of college preparatory courses that encourage mastery across a wide range of disciplines and within the requirements of most American universities and colleges, especially those of the University of California and California State University systems.

College Preparatory Courses

College preparatory courses at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School meet the University of California A to G requirements. These courses prepare students across many disciplines for college admission and provide an excellent foundation for the successful completion of college course work. Courses that have UC and CSU approval are so designated in the Course Catalog.

Honors Courses

Honors courses are college preparatory courses designed for students with a specific aptitude in a particular content area. Honors courses approach content at a faster pace and greater depth than traditional college preparatory courses. Students are typically recommended for admission to these courses based on academic performance, but they may also petition a Counselor or Administrator for placement. Decisions are based on the student’s probability of succeeding in the desired course.

24 Students enrolled in Honors coursework are required to complete the requirements of the Honors Contract. If students do not meet the requirements of that agreement, they will be moved to a non-Honors class. Parents will be notified of the class change.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

Advanced Placement courses are instructed on a college level, and students, after successfully passing the standardized AP exam, may receive college credit upon admission to participating universities. The students must meet course entrance requirements and successfully complete all summer work (if applicable). Students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the AP exam in May. In order to receive the AP grade point average (GPA) boost, students must sit for and take the AP exam. It is advised that students check with the colleges for AP course acceptance policies. Acceptance of AP coursework for college credit varies among colleges and universities.

Admission to the course follows the same protocol as does admission to Honors courses.

Summer Session

Credit Recovery

Remediation is required for all Ds and required for all Fs.

Summer school classes may be offered (on a limited basis) for students to mitigate a failing grade for a specific course. The student will be required to work under the supervision of a teacher and show proficiency on the unit or standard failed in the coursework. The completed work will be submitted to the teacher of record under a specified timeline and appropriate credit will be given. The teacher will submit the change to the Administration for application to the official transcripts.

For courses not offered on site during the summer, summer assignments or online courses through an accredited agency can be sought for students in need of credit recovery or mastery of previously attempted coursework. Online courses are supplemented by scheduled meetings and assessments and are supervised by a designated moderator. All credit recovery summer online courses must be completed before the start of the first semester (first day of fall classes). If course work is not completed, student will remain on academic probation until the credits are recovered.

Costs for all recovery credit, on- or off-campus, will be at the parents’ expense.

Summer Advancement/Community College Courses

25 Summer courses may also be offered so students can advance in the required A-G coursework. These courses will be offer at the request of students and when the minimum class size and instructor availability are met.

A student wishing to take an online course through an accredited institution to advance coursework must seek permission from the counselor and Administration. The student must complete the course before the start of the new school year with a B- or above to advance to the next course in the sequence. Student must submit official transcript from the accredited agency to the counselor one week prior to the start of the new school year. The summer course grade will be recorded in the student’s GPA.

Assessment

It is the goal of every teacher at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac School High School to design lessons that meet the needs of all students and provide many opportunities to learn the content of each course. Every effort will be made to create opportunities that meet a variety of learning styles and to support success in all academic courses.

The percentage grading range used by Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School is as follows:

Cumulative grade point averages (GPA) will be reported both weighted and un-weighted to colleges and universities. Scholars will be evaluated on a semester system. Progress reports will be issued at the mid-point of each semester.

Grade Percentage Weight for Weight for Weight for AP College Prep Honors Course Courses A 93 – 100 4.0 4.5 5.0 A- 90 – 92 4.0 4.5 5.0 B+ 87 – 89 3.5 4.0 4.5 B 83 – 86 3.0 3.5 4.0 B- 80 – 82 3.0 3.5 4.0 C+ 77 – 79 2.5 3.0 3.5 C 73 – 76 2.0 2.5 3.0 C- 70 – 72 2.0 2.5 3.0 D+ 66 – 69 1.3 0 0 D 62 – 66 1.0 0 0 D- 60 – 61 0.7 0 0 F 59 and Below 0.0 0 0

A mark of Incomplete (I) will be permitted in the following cases:

26 Prolonged illness substantiated with documentation; Appearance in court; Quarantine (if distance learning is not available); Attendance at a funeral of a family member; at the discretion of the Administration.

For eligibility reasons, an Incomplete is equivalent to an F. (Refer to the Academic Eligibility Section). The student has 15 calendar days from the last day of the term to complete all work related to this Incomplete unless additional time is deemed appropriate by the Administration.

Failure to make up the Incomplete within the designated time may result in no credit for all work missed and will be reflected in the final grade.

“To walk alongside, in the spirit of relationship and affection, pointing to the horizon and allowing the person to follow his/her own path, is the approach of the Company of Mary.” - Educational Project of the International Company of Mary

Learning Modalities

At Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School, student learning is paramount. We strive to meet the learning needs of all students through engaging students in various learning modalities creating an environment of life-long learning applicable to real-life situations.

Sustained Inquiry Learning (SIL)

SIL is a learning methodology that requires students to take significant responsibility for their own learning. It is academically rigorous requiring students to ask complex questions, develop strategies for research/investigation, evaluate and analyze information, and arrive at conclusions based on evidence. Depending on the project, scholars may need to engage experts in the field and report their findings to an audience of teachers, parents, and industry leaders within the local community. The process itself and what is learned throughout have real-world application and prepare scholars for today’s workplace.

Active Lecture

Instructor-led presentation of course content will begin with a specific stated objective and will be accompanied by integration of the digital learning platforms. Presentations will be accompanied by effective use of multi-media. Students will be instructed on how to use specific note taking strategies.

Discussion/Group Analysis

Through the use of Socratic Method, students will be presented with a topic for discussion which relates to course content with specific objectives. Methods will be used to solicit maximum participation from each student.

27 Collaborative Learning/Small Group Activities

Collaborative learning involves grouping and pairing of students for the purpose of achieving an academic goal. Students at various performance levels will work together in small groups toward a common goal prescribed in the learning objective. The students are responsible for one another’s learning as well as their own, such that the success of one student helps other students be successful. Culminating assignments can be group projects, individual projects, or both.

Individual Learning Activities

Individual Learning Activities will be used to reinforce course content and to meet specific learning objectives. Traditional assignments such as research papers, essays, problem solving, reading assignments, and review questions will be complemented by assignments such as electronic publishing, video productions, and presentations.

Projects/Project-Based Learning

Traditional projects follow the instructional process and are used to analyze and synthesize the content related to the stated objectives. Projects can be individual or of a group nature. Projects are often used as alternative assessments to determine student mastery of the specified learning objectives.

Project-based learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they are studying. Students utilize questioning, inquiry, and critical thinking skills to solve real-world problems. Instructors use problem-based learning to teach through the project, not as a culminating assignment that follows instruction. With project-based learning, the inquiry process starts with a guiding question and lends itself to collaborative projects that integrate various subjects within the curriculum. Questions are asked that direct students to encounter the major elements and principles of a discipline.

Modality Ratios

For Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School learning environments to be student- centered, technology-enhanced, academically strong, innovative learning environments, the Learning Modalities will be present in every classroom in proportions appropriate to each class level and based upon the needs of the students.

28 Monitoring Student Progress

FACTS

FACTS is Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s Student Information System (SIS). It is the school-wide platform for registering new families, scheduling classes, recording grades, generating transcripts, marking attendance, managing student information, posting parent resources, and maintaining the school calendar. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School provides parents with log-in access to track student progress and to keep student information current.

Teachers will use FACTS to record key classroom information, such as course syllabi, course outlines, course grades, and student attendance. Report cards will be issued by email through FACTS and will require an electronic signature. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School teachers maintain an open grade book, allowing parents the real-time opportunity to monitor student progress.

Teachers will post assignment grades within one week of the due date, unless the assignment is one that requires extra attention. For long-term assignments, teachers will post updates or grades representing completion of stages of a project according to required due dates.

Student Evaluations

Student evaluations will be sent through FACTS via email at mid-term and semester end. Parents can review student progress in real-time through the FACTS website. After discussing progress in a course with your student, consult directly with the appropriate teacher when lack of progress in indicated. Our goal is for students to become their own best advocates; thus, we ask that as parents you allow your student the opportunity to discuss and resolve the situation with the teacher prior to getting involved.

Parent Conferences

Should the need for a parent/student/teacher conference arise, please contact the teacher via email to schedule an appointment. Unscheduled (drop in) conferences do not allow the teacher or student to properly plan for the conference. If you have trouble reaching the teacher through email, please call the High School Office, and we will give the teacher the message and he/she will return your call.

Communication with Teachers

Teachers may be contacted through email using their first initial and last name @sjdls.com. If you prefer, you may call the High School Office and leave a message for the teacher to return your call.

29 Academic Formation Policy

Failure to turn in an assignment on the due date results in a substantial negative impact on a student’s grade, but more importantly, the student will have lost a significant learning opportunity. To encourage and assist students as they work towards developing solid work and study habits, when a student earns a zero through failure to turn in or complete an assignment the student will be requested to attend the teacher’s Office Hours period to complete the assignment. Students will be periodically reminded that the assignment is missing but will have continual access to this information on FACTS.

If completing work becomes an ongoing problem, the Administration, parents and student will conference to come up with a solution. An academic contract may be drawn, up if necessary. Students may lose their eligibility to compete in Athletics or participate in extra-curricular activities.

Academic Eligibility

To be in good academic standing while at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School, a student must maintain a GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) with no grades of F or incomplete grades. Failure to maintain a 2.0 GPA will result in a student’s loss of co-curricular eligibility and the student being placed on Academic Probation. A student may not participate in co-curricular competition when on Academic Probation or with an F in any class. Students may regain eligibility by attending summer school to attain recovery credit or by completing an approved online course assigned through the Counselor to regain eligibility, in accordance with CIF requirements.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is the basis of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s goal to enable an exchange of ideas and develop new knowledge, and it requires that individual students work with and trust one another. Avoiding academically dishonest behavior (plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, and falsification) is often cited as the way to promote academic integrity. But when the focus is on negative behaviors—where integrity is absent—conversations about integrity are centered on suspicion rather than trust, respect, and growth. It is a required value that all students take responsibility and complete their own work to the best of their ability. It is also a required value that students encourage one another to lead lives of integrity – academically and in general.

Students who study together must cite their own answers and their own work. If students are caught or suspected of cheating, the teacher will address the concern with the students to get clarity of the situation. If the teacher decides that academic integrity was jeopardized, the students will be given a zero on that assignment and the Administration will be notified. Students who allow their work to be copied are as much at fault as those who did the copying. If the student has violated academic integrity, if Honors status has been earned in the that grading period, the student will not be recognized with an award certificate. Students who are repeat

30 offenders will face severe consequences including conferences with parents, students and the Administration, detentions, suspensions or documentation in school records.

Written assignments will be required to be submitted to an “plagiarism beacon” or similar authenticity check programs. A match on or similar programs does not necessarily indicate plagiarism has occurred, and teachers will work with students to understand how and why a match has occurred and set acceptable parameters when noticing a match.

Academic Probation

If a student does not meet CIF or school eligibility requirements, he/she is placed on Academic Probation for the duration of the grading period. Grading periods mark mid-terms, first semester, and second semester. Should the student re-establish eligibility at the end of the next grading period, he/she will be released from probation when the probation list is issued. Involvement in extra-curricular activities for probationary students is as follows:

Cheer No participation in scheduled events (athletic or school-sponsored event).

Athletics No participation in any scheduled games, meets, invitationals, tournament, etc. Student cannot be dismissed early or travel with the team. They cannot be on the sidelines or bench during the game. The student will still be able to practice.

ASB Executive Council ASB maintains 3.0 GPA; class officers 2.7. No participation in scheduled meetings or events as an officer, attendance to the school-wide event is allowed.

Clubs No participation in any scheduled meetings or events.

Theater No participation in the production as determined by the Principal.

Students who are on academic probation may regain eligibility by making up Ds and Fs by completing the work or through credit recovery. The following conditions apply:

1. The grade earned will be averaged into the overall GPA and does not replace the previous grade (for NCAA Core GPA, the grade is replaced if the class is one of the first 10 core classes taken); 2. Students must replace all Fs from the most recent grade period with passing grades to regain eligibility; 3. A 2.0 GPA must be obtained when make-up grades are averaged with previous grades; 4. Credit recovery must be taken at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School or an approved accredited provider before or during the next term unless prior written approval is obtained from the administration.

31 "No F” Policy

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School maintains a "no F" policy, requiring a student to make up work or recover credit for a specific course before resuming participation in athletic competitions or co-curricular activities. A student with an F at mid-term grades must demonstrate a passing grade in the course to resume participation in athletic competitions or co- curricular activities, assuming all other eligibility requirements are met. A student with an F at semester grades must raise the grade to passing prior to resuming participation in athletic competition, assuming all other eligibility requirements are met.

Students with Learning Challenges

Qualified students with professionally identified disabilities/challenges will be provided reasonable accommodations within the school’s resources. Reasonable accommodations that exceed school resources can be provided at the expense of the parent. Modifications to the curriculum that will alter the school’s mission as a Catholic, college-preparatory school cannot be offered. Students with learning disabilities will be assisted in obtaining the appropriate Individualized Learning Program (ILP) so the student’s progress will not be compromised, and so that every possible effort is made to maximize the student’s potential.

Final Examinations

Final examinations are given at the end of each semester during the designated exam week. Specific circumstances apply:

1. All financial obligations (tuition, athletic fees, etc.) must be up-to-date and paid in full for students to take their exams. 2. If a student is absent during exam week, he or she must provide written verification from a doctor that the absence was due to medical reasons only. In cases of personal emergencies, parents or guardians must contact the high school by phone on the day of the absence and must provide a written explanation of the emergency when the student returns. Such verification will be required before any student may take a make-up exam. Calendar information is provided before each school year. Family vacations must be scheduled within the school vacation times. 3. Dismissal from an exam for disciplinary reasons will result in a zero mark for the exam.

Honor Roll

Academic honors earned during the school year are based upon a student’s grade point average for specific semesters of study. Honor students are designated as those with a GPA of 3.5 to 3.79 as Honor Roll, a GPA of 3.8 to 3.99 as High Honor Roll, and a GPA of 4.0 or higher as the Principal’s Honor Roll.

32 Currently, Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School maintains membership in two Honor Societies – National Honor Society (NHS) and the California Scholarship Federation (CSF). Membership is open to Sophomores through Seniors meeting the academic and leadership qualifications of each society. Please see the faculty advisor for more information.

Seniors will be evaluated on a cumulative, four-year, weighted GPA. Students earning a 3.5-3.79 will be awarded a Cum Laude cord; 3.8-3.99 will earn a Magma Cum Laude cord; and students earning a 4.0 and above will earn a Summa Cum Laude cord. These cords will be worn at graduation. Students must be in good standing, meaning clear of disciplinary action, to accept this honor. Education in the Company of Mary schools focus on development of the whole person.

Outside Courses

Prior written approval is required to receive credit for regular or summer school courses taken outside of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School to satisfy graduation requirements and to be printed on a student’s transcript. Courses will only be approved if the equivalent course is not offered (or does not work within the schedule) at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School and if it is needed for graduation, or if special circumstances exist. Approval for special circumstances must be given by the Principal for credit to be recorded on the transcript.

Community Service

Many opportunities for service will be provided through Campus Ministry. Service to others and for others is a foundational and formational part of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School as we strive to Extend Our Hand. Community service 80 hours to be completed by grade twelve. Possible breakdowns in each year as follows:

-9th grade 16 hours

-10th grade 16 hours

-11th grade 24 hours

-12th grade 24 hours

Students are encouraged to organize service opportunities among the student body to benefit those outside or within the school community. Service activities must be with a recognized non- profit organization and service activities may not result in monetary reward, an academic letter grade, or graduation credits. Activities may occur on the school campus for those students who are too young to drive; however, all students are expected to include service hours from the secular and parish communities. Typically, our students earn well over the required number of hours.

33 Detailed guidelines for satisfying community service requirements and a list of suggested services can be obtained from the Campus Minister who moderates the Magis Program. Services not listed may be approved by written petition that includes justification and rationale acceptable to the Campus Minister. Confirmandi service hours within the parish may be applicable to school service credit with the approval of the Campus Minister.

“Continue, my dearest Daughter, and may our good Sisters, moved by the holy love of God, emulate the one who surpasses us in the exercise of true and solid virtues. It is the way of relieving your good Mother (Blessed Virgin Mary) in her sorrows, when she sees you all taking great steps toward perfection, to which we are committed by an Institute as excellent as ours.”

35 Section V Student Programs and Services

To meet the needs of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School students, various organizations, services, and programs have been established. These groups and services enhance the academic life and total education of our students.

Campus Ministry – “Ministry of Magis”

Ministry of Magis, our Campus Ministry program, works in close cooperation with the Theology Department to foster a Catholic Christian spirituality on campus that enables and encourages students to respond to Christ and His call to Faith. Campus Ministry provides opportunities for worship through the celebration of the Eucharist, as well as prayer services and opportunities for the celebration of Reconciliation.

Opportunities for continued growth and understanding are an important aspect of faith and spirituality. Therefore, all students have the opportunity to engage in grade level or campus-wide retreats. Seniors will enjoy an off-campus retreat (The La Mothe Retreat – formerly known as Kairos) sometime during the spring term. The spiritual growth, reflection, and deepening of faith that can occur on retreat is an essential element of living out our Catholic Christian faith.

Our student body celebrates Mass weekly on Monday mornings. Mass begins at 8:15 a.m. and all students are expected to attend. Students not in attendance will be marked absent for that time. Students are required to wear Mass uniforms for liturgy and formal celebrations. There are occasions when Mass times change. Please keep watch on the Google Calendar for these changes.

Confirmation

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School works in close collaboration with three local parishes (Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Temecula, Saint Martha in Murrieta, and Saint Mother Teresa in Winchester) in preparing Catholic students for the sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation is a three-year program within the Diocese of San Bernardino. The goal of Confirmation preparation is to help the youth understand the teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and become more aware of the importance of the universal and local church in personal faith development. Together the school and the parish communities support youth as they commit to active “adulthood” in the Roman Catholic tradition.

The following procedures must be followed:

1. Your family must be a registered parishioner at a Roman Catholic Church. 2. The student must meet with the Director in charge of Confirmation at that parish and present a Confirmation Form stating that he/she is a student of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School.

36 3. The Confirmation Form is then signed by the parish Director of Confirmation and returned to the Campus Minister. 4. The student will be instructed in the catechism through Religion classes at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School, but must participate in the retreats, social, and service requirements at the parish level. It is the responsibility of the family to know when these events are scheduled. 5. Students will receive the sacrament of Confirmation at his/her registered parish on the specific scheduled date. Check for the date at the local parish.

Students who are registered parishioners at parishes outside these three local parish communities follow the same procedure above after conferencing with the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School Campus Minister.

Lunch Program Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac High School will be partnering with local vendors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the Saint Jeanne School Cafeteria on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to provide lunch options for our students. Lunches must be ordered by Friday at 5 p.m. the week prior online. The price for lunch will varies depending on the student’s selections.

If your student will be bringing lunch from home, we have microwaves available for them to use to warm up any item they may have. There is no refrigeration available, so please use insulated bags. We encourage students to bring a reusable water bottle to fill up water from the filtered system located in the lobby area.

Students may also order for delivery services, but orders must indicate drop off at the table outside the H Archway to avoid confusion. Lunches must be delivered during lunch time. Students will not be allowed to miss class to pick up lunch. Parents bringing lunch must put the lunch on the delivery table as well. Please mark the lunch with the student’s name.

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac is a closed campus. Students are not allowed to leave campus for lunch.

House/Mentor Program

Each student at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School will be assigned to a “House” and faculty mentors who lead the House activities. The Houses are named after significant people, places, or events in the life of Saint Jeanne. Currently, there are five houses – The House of Lestonnac, The House of La Mothe, The House of Montaigne, and The House of Toulouse.

Faculty mentors will act as personal resources to students as they navigate their high school career. The mentor program serves multiple purposes with an emphasis on enhancing the student’s experience at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School. A key component of the Sisters of the Company of Mary Educational Project is to build “a relationship which accompanies, integrates and fosters growth.”

37

1. The primary purpose of the mentor program is to enhance the Campus Ministry program, specifically by modeling for our students a Catholic Christian Spirituality and faith life. 2. A second reason for the mentor program is to build relationships with each student beyond the academic environment. These relationships will decidedly have an academic tone, such as helping a struggling student regain focus, or directing students toward resources to help them be successful. 3. A third purpose of the mentor program is to know there are others on campus who genuinely know him/her and sincerely care on an individual basis.

Associated Student Body (ASB)

Leadership, Ownership, and Accountability. The primary goals of ASB are to create a memorable experience for all students on campus, to promote school unity and spirit, and to grow as student leaders. ASB actively works to ensure that student activities and campus life are alive and well. ASB officers are elected to office by class elections and must hold a GPA of 2.7 or higher, 3.0 for Executive Council ASB Officers.

Co-Curricular Clubs and Organizations

Activities include the athletic programs, theater and musical productions, and clubs chartered by the ASB. Functions sponsored by the ASB include dances, assemblies, pep rallies, MORP (PROM spelled backwards), Friendsgiving, Homecoming and Winter Formal.

Club activity on campus varies from year to year according to student interest. The clubs currently on campus include the National Honor Society, California Scholastic Federation, and Robotics. More clubs can be established through “Club Rush Week” based on student interest and committed participation.

For a student to be eligible to participate in any extra-curricular or social activities (athletics, pep squad, ASB, clubs, school play/musical, socials, etc.) on any school day, he/she must be present for classes.

Any student who quits any competitive or performance activity such as a varsity team or musical performance or play after the final cut or the first competition or rehearsal, whichever comes first, or is removed from a team or activity for violation of established policies, may be prohibited from participation in any other activity for one calendar year, except with the approval of the Principal. We are asking that students discern prior to making a commitment to a troupe, group, or team. “Let your yes be yes and your no be no.”

38 College and Career Counseling

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School provides College and Career Counseling for our students. Students and their parents meet with the counselor to discuss class selection preferences, college aspirations, and career goals.

Students and families are expected to participate in Naviance, college fairs, evening informational sessions, and college/career speakers. Naviance is an online program utilized to chart progress through coursework, explore career and college choices, and submit materials needed for the college application process.

Standardized test preparation and administration is organized by our College and Career counselor. Students gain valuable experience with standardized tests by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT), and a special version of PSAT test as freshmen. Juniors take the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) in October and the SAT in February. Seniors have an opportunity to take the SAT in October. The tests are administered at school during a school day for the convenience of our students and families.

Future Farmers of America (FFA) Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School is proud to be one of four Catholic High Schools in the nation and the only high school in Temecula to offer an FFA Charter. The FFA is a school- based agricultural educational program featuring three components.

1. Classroom and laboratory instruction are contextual, inquiry-based, and interactive. 2. FFA and organizations such as PAS and NYFEA that help members develop leadership, personal growth, and career success. 3. Supervised agricultural experience (SAE) programs that allow members to apply knowledge and skills through experiential, service, and work-based learning opportunities.

Students wishing to be a part of FFA must commit to participating in all three of the components mentioned above. Students at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School follow the guidelines of the State and National FFA organization and our held to the standards of the Chapter. On Fridays, students wishing to support pride in FFA may wear FFA spirit attire.

Academic Study Trips

In recognition of the value of learning that occurs beyond the classroom, the Administration encourages off-campus study trips and activities that reinforce course content. All school and Diocesan policies must be adhered to, and all activities must be planned in advance. Study trips require prior authorization from the principal. Students must have a standard Study Trip form signed by their parents/guardians in order participate in such activities.

39 Participating in study trips is a privilege, not a right. Students may be denied the privilege of attending a study trip if they are not maintaining adequate academic progress and if their coursework would be negatively impacted by missing class. Students on disciplinary probation participate at the discretion of the Administration.

The Company of Mary International Network has schools throughout the world. Discovering who we are as individuals within a global context is an integral part of the school’s philosophy. As we venture out into the founding year of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School, our founding group of students, “Living Stones,” will be travelling abroad to reflect and discover the genesis of the Company of Mary. This international study trip is planned for spring of each year and is planned to make stops in Bordeaux, France; Barcelona, Spain; and Rome, Italy. More information will be provided as the itinerary is finalized and travel restrictions are made clear.

The educational or cultural value of the trip must justify the time, distance, and expense involved. Purely recreational trips shall be held outside of school time and not sponsored by the school. The principal shall establish and supervise local procedures for school field/study trips in accordance with diocesan and local regulations.

6315.1 Criteria for Approval

Safe and proper transportation; E. Adequate supervision by adults in compliance with criteria for eligibility to volunteer; F. Advance notification to all affected staff members and parents; G. Documentation that appropriate insurance is in effect. (Cf. 6315.6)

6315.2 Permission Slips

No student shall go on a field/study trip unless the approved permission slip signed by parent or guardian has been returned to the school. A separate permission slip must be obtained for every field/study trip. Requests for parental permission shall be accompanied by full details about the field/study trip. Field/study trip permission forms shall include, but not be limited to, the following information:

A. Destination and purpose; B. Date and hour; C. Cost, if any; D. Student’s full name; E. Signature, address, and telephone number for emergency use.

6315.3 Supervision

Students on field/study trips must be adequately and effectively supervised. Every effort shall be made to assist faculty with supervision. (Cf. 5151)

A member of the faculty must be present on every regular field/study trip. The number of adult chaperones, deemed by the Principal to be adequate and to be appropriate for the age group and type of field/study trip, shall assist the teacher with supervision.

When students travel on a bus, there must be at least one faculty supervisor on each bus.

6315.4 Student Safety

In compliance with the California code, supervisors or teachers must carry first aid kits when taking students on field/study trips.

Careful provision shall be made for the students’ safety at all times. Safety features shall be discussed with the students prior to embarking on the field/study trip:

A. When students travel on foot, they should be instructed and supervised regarding the crossing of streets, use of trails, bicycle paths, etc.; B. The preferred method of transporting students is by properly certified common carrier;

41 C. Field/Study trip planning shall include arrangements for entering and leaving the vehicles to insure student safety and to avoid disruption of traffic; D. If during any field/study trip students shall be given the opportunity to engage in an activity that presents special hazards (e.g. swimming), appropriately certified or trained adults must be available for supervision; E. Supervisors/chaperones shall not divert from the provisions and restrictions listed on the field trip permission form.

The Principal shall give special consideration to supervision of overnight lodging. C. If the group of students includes both boys and girls, both men and women over 21 years of age shall be included as supervisors.

In addition to Diocesan policies, the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School Leadership Team will impose requirements for overnight activities as needed and in accordance with the type of event.

Field Trip Transportation

Any parent or approved driver who wishes to transport a student other than their own must meet the following criteria:

 Provide proof of $100,000/$300,000 insurance coverage  Provide a copy of a valid driver’s license  Fingerprinting and Safe Environment clearance through the Diocese of San Bernardino  Complete all necessary forms

Student Identification Cards

Each student is issued a school identification card at the beginning of the school year. This card identifies him or her as a student of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School and must be worn when students are on campus and available for presentation to school personnel at school events. This card may be used for admission to certain athletic and social events at a free or reduced rate. The school identification card will serve several purposes as the high school continues to grow.

42 Student Parking

Driving to school should be considered a privilege and not a right. Parking is limited on campus and student parking on the residential streets surrounding the school is prohibited. Once students obtain a valid driver’s license, students should request permission to park on school grounds by filling in the Student Driver Parking Permit form which can be obtained through the High School Office. There are a limited number of spaces available to students. Spaces will be issued on a first come – first served basis. As the community grows it will be necessary to prioritize the need for driving to school versus carpooling or riding with family members at the elementary school. Priority will be given to older students and students in good standing with grades and citizenship. As the need presents itself, it may be necessary to assign parking spaces based on a “lottery system.” Violations of any of the rules below will result in the parking permit being revoked or suspension of parking privileges.

Once a parking permit is approved, students must park in the stalls between the gym and the field. Students must commit to following the safety rules: 1. Park within the marked stalls. 2. No cell phone use. 3. Follow the speed limit of 5 mph in the parking lot. 4. Follow the traffic pattern and be vigilant of pedestrians and other vehicles. 5. No loitering or gathering with friends in the parking lot.

Cell Phones

Cell phones are a part of everyday life but tend to be a distraction in educational settings. Students are not allowed to have cell phones out during the school day (including breaks or lunch) unless specifically directed by a teacher. If cell phones are out without permission, the phone will be taken and turned into the High School Office for students to pick up at the end of the day. Students may leave his/her phone at the High School Office for safe keeping at the start of the day to avoid the temptation of cell use. At SJHS we are practicing the art of face-to-face communication.

Students are asked to be good stewards of our community by respectfully using social media outlets to uplift and support fellow students and the community at large. Inappropriate, harassing, or unkind language/behavior/images exhibited by a SJHS student on social media and brought to the attention of the Administration will be dealt with as a disciplinary matter.

“We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”

Personal Items

The unique nature of each program will require student athletes to purchase personal items such as swimsuits, personal uniform items, under garments, shin guards, cleats, mouth guards, or similar personal items required but not provided by the program. Some of these costs might be included in the program fee or may require an individual purchase by the student athlete.

Payment of Fees

Athletic fees must be paid prior to participating in the first scheduled contest or competition. The athletic fee will be posted to each student's account and payments may be made online or by check to the high school office. Athletic fees are not refundable after the first scheduled contest or competition. Program fees require payment in advance of ordering equipment. Program fees are not refundable. 45 Dress and Behavior

Athletes representing Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School are expected to demonstrate exemplary behavior and appearance. Team uniforms must be kept neat and clean and worn in an appropriate and respectful manner. All issued uniforms must be returned in good condition, or the athlete will be charged $50 for those items lost or damaged.

Appropriate and modest work-out clothing must be worn during practice and PE. Student athlete behavior should demonstrate sportsmanship and courtesy, particularly when student athletes are guests of another school. Teams may wear the competition jersey on game days with the regular uniform bottoms.

Failure to meet Athletic Department or team standards will result in an athlete being suspended or removed from the particular team. On-going violations may result in permanent suspension from athletic participation. Parents, as primary educators, and “best cheerleaders” for their children must also follow standards of behavior consistent with a Catholic school community.

Hazing

Hazing or initiation of new or existing team members is forbidden and will result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School.

Fulfilling Obligations

Any student who quits any competitive team after the final cut or the first competition, whichever comes first, or is removed from a team for violation of established policies, may be prohibited from participation in any other sport for one calendar year, except with the approval of the principal. The student athlete will not be eligible for Varsity letter recognition if the season is not completed. A commitment to a team is one that requires discernment prior to participation – “Let your yes be yes and your no be no.”

Eligibility

If a student does not meet eligibility requirements, the student is placed on Academic Probation for the duration of the grading period. Grading periods mark the end of midterms first semester, and second semester. Should the student re-establish eligibility at the end of the next grading period, the student will be released from probation when the probation list is issued. Please see academic eligibility requirements in the Academics Section of the Parent/Student Handbook. Students on academic probation may practice with the team at the discretion of the coach, but may not compete, travel, be dismissed from class early, or sit with the team during competition.

46 Sportsmanship

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School athletes are expected to play and practice their sport with honor and discipline, demonstrating the finest Catholic values. Any athlete who fails to meet these expectations will be held accountable by the coach, Athletic Director, Administration, and the Leadership Team. Consequences may range from benching to removal from the team.

Transfer Student-Athletes

All transfer student-athletes must meet the requirements specified in Section I Admission and Enrollment of the Parent-Student Handbook. Further, student-athletes must complete the athletic packet and physical and have a current vaccination profile prior to participating in any practice, scrimmage, or game. The student athlete must meet the minimum academic CIF eligibility standard for the grading period in which they are transferring. Once the student is enrolled, the student athlete must then meet the minimum academic eligibility standard for Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School (Section IV Curriculum and Instruction). Participation in each sport will be determined upon completion of CIF transfer paperwork. CIF regulations may require the student complete a “sit out period.”

Summer Participation and Course Work

Student-athletes must be registered for the next academic year to participate in summer pre- season practices, scrimmages, and games; they must also submit a physical and completed athletic packet. If a student athlete takes a summer course (on campus or online), the class must be completed before the first day of classes for first semester. If the summer course is not completed before the first day of classes, the student athlete will be on probation until the next grading period, which is at the end of the first quarter (CIF Bylaws 205).

“The Catholic school’s proper function is to create for the school community a special atmosphere animated by the Gospel spirit of freedom and charity, to help youth grow according to the new creatures they were made through baptism as they develop their own personalities, and finally to order the whole of human culture to the news of salvation so that the knowledge the students gradually acquire of the world, life and man is illumined by faith.”

– His Holiness Pope Paul VI, October 28, 1965

“God is not waiting around to get even with people for things that they have done fifteen years before. God is gentle and humble of heart; unconditionally good and loving. Therefore we do not need to cower and grovel before God’s will. We need to trust in it; trust in its awesome beauty, its unconditional power to bring goodness out of seeming limitless diversity of so many people’s lives; trust in the affection that the Hebrew prophets termed ‘hesed we emet’ (a parent’s love for a child).”

Section XIII Attendance Policies

Attendance and timeliness are aspects of student success and the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School learning culture. In addition to attendance and timeliness, learning preparedness that includes uniform dress, organization and time management, and preparedness with classroom materials is required of all students.

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic School’s learning environments are structured using a modified block schedule. Classroom attendance positively affects a student’s academic performance and overall learning experience. Teacher will take attendance each class.

50 Attendance records will be monitored through Sycamore. Disciplinary actions will be taken for students missing significant class time.

The primary responsibility for monitoring and recording attendance resides with the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher records attendance into the Sycamore student information system. Sycamore attendance records remain the legal record of student attendance, and classroom teachers will maintain open communication with parents regarding student progress coursework.

Cumulative records of student attendance are kept, and the Administration maintains communication between the school and the parents or guardians regarding a student’s overall attendance trends. Parents may monitor student attendance through the Sycamore Portal.

Every Minute Counts

Students are expected to be in class and on time every day. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s attendance policies and procedures are designed to increase student learning by maximizing the minutes available to students in the learning environment. Appointments during school hours and family vacations during school days are highly discouraged and often hurt the students academic performance not to mention extra-curricular participation.

Liturgies, assemblies, and other related activities during the school day are essential aspects of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s commitment to the school community, and students are required to attend.

Excused Absences

An excused absence is a recorded absence which has been cleared with a written and signed communication from a parent or guardian. Excused absences count toward a student’s overall allowable absences. The following are reasons for an excused absence from school:

1. Illness; 2. Urgent medical/dental treatment (with doctor’s note); 3. Funerals; 4. Unexpected Family Urgencies.

Families are encouraged to schedule all appointments outside of school hours to avoid missing class time. An excused absence accompanied by a verified doctor’s note is recorded but does not count against a student’s allowable absences per semester.

51 Attendance Protocols

➢ Please notify the attendance office in advance of a student’s absence by phone, followed up by written communication from the parent or guardian. ➢ Please report student absences before the beginning of the school day and no later than 8:30 a.m. ➢ Written communication with the High School Office is required before a student can be recorded as an excused absence. ➢ All calls and written communication are subject to follow-up communication.

Unexcused Absences

An unexcused absence will be recorded when a student misses class for any reason other than one enumerated under Excused Absences. A student absence will also be considered unexcused without a written communication from a parent or guardian. Discretionary absences such as family vacations and personal appointments are discouraged and are unexcused. Unexcused absences count against a student’s allowable absences for the quarter or semester.

At the discretion of the teacher, a student may be given alternative assignments when course material is missed due to an unexcused absence. The alternative assignments may be in addition to other missed work in order to receive credit for the day’s assignments.

Excessive Absences

Students approaching the 10 allowed absences per block/period in any semester will be referred to the Administration and are subject to the following progress Restorative Action:

1. Parent Conference with Administration; 2. Attendance Contract; 3. Mandatory Withdrawal.

Tardiness

It is Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s goal to produce academically prepared young adults who possess a sense of personal accountability and are equipped with the necessary skills to enter the workforce where punctuality is essential. Arriving late to class is disruptive to the learning environment and negatively affects the student’s learning experience. Students are considered late when they arrive for class after 8:15 a.m. or the time indicated on the schedule. Students arriving after 8:15 a.m. will write his/her name in the black binder at the front desk in the High School Office where the absence will be changed to a tardy by the front office.

Students are expected to attend Monday Morning Mass. If a student misses Mass, he/she will be considered tardy and constant offenders will be subject to disciplinary action.

52 When a student reaches 10 tardies in a given grading period, he/she is subject to a Tardy Action Plan.

Tardy Action Plan

Students will be placed on a Tardy Action Plan when they approach ten (10) tardies in any given grading period. The Administration will communicate with the parent/guardian of the student and will arrange for one of the following:

 Parent Conference;  Attendance Contract;  On-Campus Suspension;

Truancy

An absence is considered a Truancy when a student is absent from class either for a whole day or any part of a day and does not have an acceptable reason or permission for the absence:

 Any student without written consent from a parent/guardian or permission from the High School Office will be marked truant;  Cutting class or any part of a class constitutes truancy and will result in Restorative Action:  Students found truant will be referred to the Administration;  The local Police Department may be contacted in all truancy cases;  The student will receive a zero in all classes for which he/she was truant but must make up the assignments missed as additional work as noted by the teacher.

Off Campus Permission

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School is a closed campus. Off-campus permission is generally granted only for medical appointments, mentoring opportunities (for Juniors), and for approved dual/concurrent enrollment classes. To reduce the time students miss school, parents are urged to arrange for appointments after school hours. Students who need to leave campus during the school day must obtain an Off-Campus Permit from the High School Office and be signed out.

For permission to leave campus during the day, students must bring a written request from parents to the Dean of Students indicating the time and reason for the off-campus permit. This must be done before school or by the end of morning break.

Extra-Curricular Participation

For a student to be eligible to participate in any extra-curricular activity (school dances, sports, cheer, theatre, etc.), students must attend classes on the day of the event (or the school day

53 prior to the event on a weekend). Excused absences (school-related activities, field trips, medical appointments, ASB, funerals, etc.) are exempt from this policy.

Immunizations and TB Testing

Parents of first-time students to Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School are required by law to provide official documentation of immunization, a current TB skin test, and a current physical. These health care requirements must be completed prior to enrollment in summer school and for the school year.

Students who do not have the above health requirements on file with Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School will not be allowed to attend classes until records are submitted.

New Vaccination

A new school immunization law requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.

Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunization of pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis. Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools, and communities against pertussis.

The new requirement affects all students--current, new, and transfers in public and private schools. The law has two phases:

➢ All grades will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school. ➢ All students entering Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school. The student must have the shot administered before the first day of school.

Flu and COVID vaccinations are encouraged for the safety of our community. Please consult with your medical professional as to how these immunizations can benefit your student’s health.

54 Section IX Behavior

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School High maintains a closed campus. Students may not leave at any time during the school day or during a school function without knowledge and permission of Administration. Students who leave campus without permission will be considered truant.

The faculty, staff, and administration support the atmosphere that fosters Catholic values in which learning can take place. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School has established a specific code of conduct which students are expected to follow. The faculty and administration strive to ensure that students meet or exceed Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School’s code for behavior, both on campus during school events and activities and off campus.

A Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student’s behavior will reflect the standard of the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School student culture. The following behaviors have no place at Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School:

➢ Fighting and verbal altercations; ➢ Use of drugs/alcohol/tobacco/vapor; ➢ Intimidation/bullying, cyber-bullying; ➢ Use of profanity; ➢ Intentional damage to or defacing of school property; ➢ Ruining another’s property or reputation; ➢ Inappropriate displays of affection; ➢ Derogatory ethnic or gender references; ➢ Sexual harassment; ➢ Defiance or disrespect for authority

Disciplinary action, based up on the severity of the incident, may include, but not be limited to verbal correction, detention, parent conference/call, disciplinary probation/contract, suspension, or expulsion.

Students may be held accountable and subjected to disciplinary action for behaviors outside of school should the school determine that off-campus conduct will affect the on-campus environment. Off-campus behavior that may shed a negative light on the Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School community or which is contrary to Church teaching may result in disciplinary action up to and including mandatory withdrawal or expulsion. Criminal activity will be reported to the local police authorities.

55 Electronic Accountability

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School recognizes the value of technology in the modern world as an integral tool in both communication and learning. The individual use of devices in the classroom empowers students to actively participate in their own education, promoting critical thinking, resource sharing, scholarship, research, and collaborating. Use of these technologies carries responsibilities and behavioral expectations consistent with the school’s mission and values.

Cell phone use during breaks and between classes is not allowed. Our goal is to promote and develop of art the face-to-face communication. If parents need to get their students a message, please call the High School Office. Likewise, if students need to get a message to parents, we will ask them to do so. The hope is to allow students to realize that cell phone use and virtual connectivity is something that can be managed – not something that manages them.

Students may not record by any electronic or photographic means any school activity, formal or informal, before, during, or after school with the exception of explicitly public events, without express written permission of all persons being recorded and without prior permission from the school administration. Unauthorized photographic or electronic recordings will result in confiscation of the recording device as well as disciplinary action. Posting of any recorded materials will be subject to the disciplinary standards.

Unauthorized use of devices during class time, including, but not limited to, the use of message boards/messaging services, games, or other websites not approved by the teacher may result in disciplinary consequences. Students using their phone without authorization will surrender the phone to the teacher/Administrator. The phone will be held at the front desk until the end of the school day.

Bullying and Cyber-bullying

Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School strives to provide a safe, positive learning climate based in Catholic tradition. Therefore, it is school policy to maintain an educational environment in which harassment, bullying, or cyber-bullying in any form are not tolerated, and those who engage in such behaviors shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.

Harassment/bullying or cyber-bullying (the misuse of technology) occur when unwelcome verbal, written, or physical conduct has been directed at a student by another student that has the effect of:

➢ Physically, emotionally, or mentally harming a student due to a student’s race, creed, color, origin, gender, physical or mental ability, or lifestyle choice; ➢ Damaging, extorting, or taking a student’s personal property; ➢ Placing a student in reasonable fear of physical, emotional, or mental harm; ➢ Placing a student in reasonable fear of damage or loss of personal property;

56 ➢ Creating an intimidating or hostile environment that substantially interferes with a student’s educational opportunities.

Complaints of having been harassed, bullied, or cyber-bullied shall be investigated promptly and corrective action shall be taken when a complaint is verified. Neither reprisals nor retaliation shall occur as a result of the submission of a complaint.

Each student shall be responsible for respecting the rights of his/her fellow students and maintaining an atmosphere free from all forms of bullying and cyber-bullying. Students should report bullying or cyber-bullying complaints to any staff member.

Progressive Discipline (Restorative Justice)

Most disciplinary matters will follow a progressive scale. A progressive scale allows students the opportunity to reflect on their behavior and learn from their mistakes. Repeat offenders (any combination of violations) will “progress” through the scale. Serious misconduct will not necessarily follow the progressive scale but will be determined by the severity of the situation.

Progressive Discipline (from lowest to highest)

➢ Verbal Warning-students who commit minor infractions, at the discretion of the teacher, may receive a verbal warning explaining the possible consequences of repeated violations of school policy. ➢ Detention ➢ Parent/Student Meeting with Administration ➢ Disciplinary Probation Contract – Meeting with Parent, Student, Administrator ➢ Suspension ➢ Withdrawal from School or Expulsion.

Detention

Students who commit minor infractions or fail to modify their behavior after a verbal warning will receive a Detention, during which an action plan will be written by the student. Employment schedules, activities, athletics and/or the lack of transportation may not interfere with a student serving detention. Students that commit major infractions or that obtain more than three infractions may require a meeting with parents and the Administration.

Disciplinary Probation Contracts

Students who commit serious misconduct or are classified as repeat offenders (three detentions in any category, or combinations of violations) and who continue to fail to modify their behavior may be placed on Disciplinary Probation for a period of time determined by the Administration. A parent/student conference with the Administration will be required. Students who are on

57 disciplinary probation must enter a Probationary Contract, working towards specific goals for an improvement of their behavior.

Suspensions

Depending on the severity of the situation and regardless of where the student falls on the Progressive Disciplinary scale, students may serve a one or more days on suspension as determined by the Administration. When a student is suspended, parents are notified and arrangements are made for a conference. A conference with the Administration, parents, and student is mandatory before the suspension may be lifted. If a student receives two suspensions in one academic year, he or she may be subject to dismissal from the school.

A student serving on-campus suspension is not attending classes and, therefore, does not meet the standards for participation in extracurricular activities including playing in a game or meet. If a student is absent during the period of suspension, he/she must serve days missed as an addition to the original suspension time.

Violations

While every attempt has been made to list all possible violations of the school’s disciplinary policy, this list is non-inclusive and may be altered in keeping with the best practices and philosophy of Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School. The Administration reserves the right to waive and/or deviate from any/all disciplinary regulations for just cause at their discretion. Violations of school policy include, but are not limited to any, of the following:

Minor Violations

Students with minor violations are subject to demerits for repeat offenders, one or two detentions, at the discretion of the Administration:

➢ Unexcused absences ➢ Disruptive, disorderly, disrespectful, or rude conduct ➢ Dress code violations ➢ Failure to comply with directions by a teacher, administrator, classified staff member, or coach ➢ Failure to comply with class rules ➢ Loitering in unauthorized areas ➢ Not prepared for class ➢ Personal displays of affection including intimate physical contact (first warning) ➢ Tardiness

Drug Testing

In order to provide the safest educational environment possible, the administrative team, with the support of the Governing Board and parents, conducts both random drug-testing and specific testing of a student when sufficient cause exists. Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School recognizes that problems stemming from chemical abuse (alcohol and drugs) interfere with life,

60 learning, and the development of the individual. Students who test positive for drug use, upon first offense, will be offered a counseling program in lieu of immediate expulsion or withdrawal from Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School. At the conclusion of the counseling program, a student will bring written proof of attendance at counseling, be re-tested for drug use and if positive usage is determined, the student will be withdrawn or expelled.

The Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic High School campus is closed to all visitors during school hours except for individuals conducting official business with the school administration. Visitors on official school business must check into the High School Office and sign in the appropriate visitor’s book and receive a visitor’s badge.

Students from other schools are not permitted to visit campus at any time during school hours unless visiting as a prospective student for the upcoming term. Such visitors must be scheduled in advance with the High School Office and must be approved by Administration before visiting. Appropriate attire is required.

Students must remain on campus for the duration of the school day. Students who are dismissed for the day due to class scheduling may leave after the last scheduled class but may not return before the end of the school day. Students with after-school activities, such as sports-team practices, may not leave campus before the end of the school day and return for the after-school activity, unless a legitimate excused absence is documented. An off-campus pass may be issued for appointments and other official business with parent’s/guardian’s written permission.

Dangerous Objects

City and state laws, as well as the Education Code, protect students from potential exposure to harm from any weapon, firecracker, or other explosive device. Possession or use of these articles as well as matches, lighters, pepper spray, or any item that endangers the community will result in severe disciplinary action.

No student, staff, or faculty member will bring onto campus any “injurious object” as defined in Ed. Code, S 43990, 171b and 12403.7 CPC (i.e. tear gas and tear gas weapons). In addition, no objects capable of inflicting substantial bodily damage not necessary for academic purpose of the student will be allowed on campus.

Injury or Illness

Students who become ill or injured at school must report to the High School Office or, with permission, to the Nurse’s Office in the Main Office complex. If parents cannot be contacted, the emergency contact will be notified. Parents must keep all emergency information up-to-date with the High School Office and in Sycamore. In the event of

66 a serious illness or injury, emergency services will be contacted, and the student will be transported to hospital as designated on emergency forms.

Basic first aid and medical supplies are maintained in the High School Office, the Main School Office, and in the PE areas for student needs. All injuries must be reported to the teacher and the High School Office and an injury report must be filed within the same day.

Medication

All medication must be stored with the High School Office. Written permission from a parent must accompany all medications. All medication must be in the original or prescription bottle. Prescription medication must be accompanied by a physician’s note and written parental permission. No medication will be given to a student without written permission. Fire extinguishers and fire alarms are placed at vital locations throughout the school, and their only use is for fire emergencies. Tampering with fire equipment violates local codes and disciplinary action will be taken.

Lock Down

1. Students will be released to parent or designated family member only; 2. Students will remain on campus until picked up; 3. Students who transport themselves will remain on campus due to traffic safety issues, unless released by a parent to drive home.

Fire Equipment

Bicycles and Skateboards

Bicycles are to be parked in designated areas. Students are urged to secure their bikes with locks. Formal dances require a tuxedo or suit for gentlemen and a formal dress for the ladies. Semi-formal dances require a suit or sport coat and tie for gentlemen and an appropriate dress for ladies. Excessively short or low-cut, strapless dresses or those with spaghetti straps are not permitted. Casual dances require tasteful attire within the standards of our Catholic Christian environment. 73

Facilities

The campus and facilities are for the use of the entire school community. Students are expected to accept personal and communal responsibility for the conditions of the campus and classrooms. Litter and trash should be disposed of in the appropriate trashcans and wastebaskets set out around the school. When special occasions allow for eating and drinking in the classroom, care should be taken to keep the rooms clean and to clean up after the occasion. “Not only are the attitudes of teachers crucial for the success of Catholic education but also the attitudes of Catholic parents. Parents must set themselves very definite priorities, such as the determination to have schools in which their children’s faith will be respected, fostered and enriched; schools in which their children learn the value and beauty of the Church’s teaching. They must also see to it that their own homes are places in which these values are first fostered and lived. Parents’ own practice of the faith, their own love for Christ, is of course fundamental.”
