A Happy New Year to you all from St. Michael’s Church Galmington! By the time you read this, Christmas will probably be a distant memory and I suspect you are contemplating taking the decorations down and getting back into routine. I hope that you enjoyed the festivities and that the “spirit of Christmas” remains with all of us well into the New Year and beyond. It was good to see some of you at St. Michael’s over December and we hope you enjoyed the Christmas Fair, Carol services and singing in Comeytrowe Centre. Thank you to for your generosity too. Proceeds over Christmas collections go towards The Children’s Society and The Children’s Hospice S.W. January can seem like a long month after the way Christmas gallops up, and of course, we perhaps anticipate the next couple of months as being the coldest and darkest months of the year, although even now the days are lengthening and the first snowdrop might be trying to force their beautiful white buds open! On January 6th, in addition to our normal services, we will be celebrating Epiphany which is when we remember the visit of astrologers, wise men or kings to Jesus. Although the visit is recorded as part of the birth stories, generally it is thought that the Eastern visitors would have visited sometime after Jesus was born, and that once they had gone, the Holy family had to flee Bethlehem because King Herod was out to eliminate what he considered to be a rival king. Traditionally we think of them as three, but in fact no-where in the Bible does it say there were three visitors, but three gifts are mentioned, so “We Three Kings” they became. The gifts they brought have a special significance, with gold suggesting kingship, frankincense deity, and myrrh, gloom and death-perhaps looking ahead to the death of this particular baby some thirty-three years later! Anyway, if you want to hear more about Epiphany, do come along especially to Songs and Praise at 6.00 on Sunday 6th January, when we will sings as many traditional Epiphany hymns as we can squeeze into 45 minutes! On January 20th we have our Archdeacon the venerable Simon Hill visiting us and we are grateful to him and all the visiting clergy who are helping us through our “Vacancy”. By the time you read this we may have presented our “Parish Profile” which will inform any hopefuls who may become our new vicar sometime this year, and then the post will be advertised through The Church Times and on the Website. As a church we are praying for him or her, even now, and asking God to lead us into the future. We will keep you posted! Apart from Sundays, everything else will be “happening” during January, beginning with our usual coffee morning on the first Saturday. We can’t promise it will be as busy as the Christmas Fair, but you will be assured of a warm wel- come! Mikey’s will begin again with the new school term on Friday mornings, Toddler Church on Tuesday mornings, our short Eucharis at 9.45 on Thursdays, and many of the other meetings during a normal week will be back too. Please do feel free to pop in to St. Michael’s when you pass & it is open. You can simply sit and contemplate quietly, light a candle for a loved one, or leave a prayer request which wlll be responded too during Morning Prayer now held from Wednesday to Friday morning at 8.30. With every good wish to everyone in the parish. As someone once said; “We live in interesting times”. Ann Goddard Reader at St. Michael’s. 2 Comeytrowe Community Hall “Village Hall Day”

5 COMEYTROWE PARISH COUNCIL

GRANTS TO LOCAL ORGANISATIONS

At their December 2018 meeting members agreed to give a grant of £400 to Citizens Advice and £150 to Age UK, as both organisations have had their funding from cut from 1 April 2019. This will have a huge impact on the services that can be provided within the local community unless equivalent funds can be raised from supporters. During 2018, residents of Comeytrowe generated 340 issues to Citizens Advice Taunton, which is staffed mainly by volunteers. The main issues discussed were benefits & tax credits, universal credit, debt and relationships and family.

10 STATEMENT FROM SOMERSET COUNTY COUNCIL CONCERNING THEIR WINTER SERVICE 2018/2019Somerset County Council will be gritting 720 miles or around 17 per cent of the total road network this winter, which is a reduction from 900 miles or 21 per cent of the network from last year. Like all councils, we are facing huge financial pressures because of falling funding from Govern- ment combined with rising costs and demand for services. The majority of roads will not receive treatment and, as such, we all, as drivers, have respon- sibility for our own safety.

Salting is carried out when road surface temperatures are predicted to drop below one degree centigrade to help prevent ice forming on the road. Nor- mally, precautionary salting is carried out in the evening or early morning. However, during severe weather conditions salting may take place at other times. Motorists should drive with caution according to the conditions and should not assume that salting has been carried out. Please check the weather forecast and road conditions before travelling and allow extra time for your journey.

Although often referred to as grit, only rock salt should be used on roads to effectively prevent ice without damaging the road surface. Similar products can be bought from DIY shops or online retailers for use on roads/ pavements, but only approved de-icing material which complies with British Standard 3247 (specification for salt spreading on highways for winter maintenance) should be used on the public highway. There is no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice on the pavement outside your home or from public spaces. It’s unlikely you’ll be sued or held legally responsible for any injuries sustained if you have cleared it carefully. Please follow the Snow Code when clearing snow and ice safely:- - if you clear snow and ice yourself, be careful that you do not make the pathways more dangerous by causing them to refreeze - clear the snow or ice early in the day - use salt or sand and not water - take care where you move the snow - offer to clear your neighbour’s path if they are unable to do it themselves. Further information can be found at www.travelsomerset.co.uk/gritting” and GOV.UK has a guide about how you can clear snow and ice from roads or pavements.
