And, at the same time a staff member must contact parents to come to pick- up their children. These are emergencies and not snow days!! The closed centers do not give refunds when they choose to close. Parents depend on child care and Creative Playrooms is always prepared to accommodate that need. Employers lose a lot of revenue and can’t always function ie. Hospitals, elderly rehab homes etc. Who is going to take care of these folks. You will see a lot of parents and children at the movies, malls, playing in the snow and they cannot work because the child care center is closed. Parents can always drive their children to school, child care and go to work even if they are running late. I am sure that their employer would be happy to see them so that the whole day is not wasted. Now, I see that centers are closing in anticipation of the snow and temperature. Bundle up your children and go to work. The only time Creative Playrooms closes is for 6 traditional holidays and that is all. Bedford Varsity Basketball 2013-2014 Author: Dr. Tony Phillips, Science@NASA

When firefighters want to extinguish a blaze, they often douse it with water. Astronauts on board the ISS, however, are experimenting with a form of water that does the opposite. Instead 2/1/2014 2:00 PM Maple Heights HS A-Maple Heights HS of stopping fire, this water helps start it. “We call it ‘supercritical water,’” says Mike Hicks of the 2/5/2014 7:30 PM East Technical HS H-BHS Main Gym Glenn Research Center in Ohio. “And it has some 2/8/2014 2:00 PM Warren Harding HS A-Warren G. Harding HS interesting properties.” 2/15/2014 2:00 PM Euclid HS H-BHS Main Gym Water becomes supercritical when it compressed to a pressure of 217 atmospheres and heated above 373o C. Above that so-called critical point, ordinary H2O transforms into something that is neither solid, liquid, nor gas. It’s more of a “liquid-like gas.” Bedford’s Varsity Wrestling “When supercritical water is mixed with organic material, 2/1/2014 9:00 AM Lake Erie League Tournament A-Maple Heights HS a chemical reaction takes place—oxidation.” Says Hicks. “It’s a form of burning without flames.” This really comes in handy when you want to get rid of certain unpleasant materials--like sewage. Cities, Super heated and compressed corporate farms, ships at sea and manned spacecraft water that starts fire! accumulate waste materials that could benefit from this kind of treatment. “When we push a wet waste stream above the critical point, supercritical water breaks the bonds of the hydrocarbons. Then, they can react with oxygen.” In other words, the slurry ignites. Sometimes, hotspots in the slurry produce visible flame, but usually not. “This is a relatively clean form of burning that produces pure water and carbon dioxide, but none of the toxic products of ordinary fire.” What does all of this have to do with the ISS? “The International Space Station provides a unique microgravity lab for studying the properties of supercritical water,” explains Hicks. One of the problems with supercritical water has to do with salt. Above the critical point, any salts dissolved in water quickly precipitate out. If this happens in a reactor vessel, the metallic components of the vessel become coated with salt and they begin to corrode. “In any realistic waste stream, we have to learn how to deal with salt. It’s a major technological hurdle.” Dealing with salt is the ultimate goal of the Super Critical Water Mixture experiment on the ISS, a joint effort between NASA and CNES, the French space agency. “By studying supercritical water without the complicating effects of gravity, we This is the rack onboard the can learn how precipitating salts behave on a very fundamental ISS where the Super level,” says Hicks, who is the principal investigator of the Critical Water Mixture experiment. “We might even be able to figure out how to draw salt experiment takes place away from corrosion-sensitive components.” The experiment, which uses French-built hardware (DECLIC) located in the station’s Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), began during the first week of July 2013. It will continue for a full year in a series of six test runs, each lasting approximately 15 days. The results could have down-to-Earth applications. The US Navy has already started using supercritical water technologies to purify waste streams onboard some of their ships, while the City of Orlando has started a supercritical treatment plant for processing municipal sludge. Says Hicks, “we’re just getting started.” Editor’s comment: The wonders of space just keep paying dividends by the hard work of men and women on the International Space Station. The international Space Station is truly man’s greatest building project. Unlike the pyramids in Egypt that will last for thousands of years the space station will eventually outlive its usefulness. But like the pyramids it took thousands of men and women twenty years to complete! Sadly President Obama killed the return to the moon project. The engineering coming from the space programs have given us the miracles of technology i.e. cell phone, fuel efficient automobiles, light weight aircraft materials, clothing, food products, etc. The list is for all practical purposes limitless and further developments will still be more even impressive. We need to be going back to the moon and on to Mars!
