Chandrasekaran The Department of Biotechnology conducted a Guest Lecture on 14th February 2018 on the topic “Biotechnology in Aquaculture” by Dr.V.S.Chandrasekaran, Principal scientist, ICAR-CIBA. He started the session with introduction to aquaculture and process of aquaculture. He stated world wide exposure of aquaculture in recent times. He explained on current research works on shrimp culture in CIBA. Also, he discussed on various fish and shrimp varieties and ornamental fishes available worldwide and their market value. Lecture No 2: Zebrafish models for human cancer Date: 3rd March 2018 Resource Person: Dr. S. Kiran Kumar 67 Hi-Tech Newsletter July - Sept The Department of Biotechnology conducted a Guest Lecture on 14th February 2018 on the topic “Zebrafish models for Human Cancer” by Dr.S.Kiran Kumar, Assistant Professor, SRM University. He started the session with basic principles of cancer and various researches going in cancer treatment. He illustrated his research works on using zebra fishes as a model organism to study cancer by inducing tumor. Also, he discussed on various future prospects of using zebra fish as a model organism to study various genetically inherited diseases. INDUSTRIAL VISITS Visit No 1: Cheyyar Co-operative Sugar Mill Date of Visit: 25th January 2018 The Department of Biotechnology arranged an Industrial Visit on 25th January 2018 to Cheyyar Co-operative Sugar Mill, Thiruvannamalai for the VI Semester Students. Faculty Mr.R.Gnanasekaran, AP and Ms.R.Anna Shiny, AP, Department of Biotechnology accompanied the students to the visit. In this industrial visit, students learned sugar extraction from sugarcane in several processes like filtration, crystallization, Size-separation, Distillation, etc. Also, quality analysis and testing of the sugar were illustrated which was very useful and informative to the students. Visit No 2: Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture Date of Visit: 15th March 2018 The Department of Biotechnology arranged an Industrial Visit on 15th March 2018 to Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture, Muttukadu for the VI Semester Students. Faculty Dr.A.Saravanan, AP and Ms.R.Anna Shiny, AP, Department of Biotechnology accompanied the students to the visit. In this industrial visit, students learned shrimp and fish culturing techniques. Many new types of fishes, lobsters, and shrimps were cultured in the industry. The fish feed production were done. 68 Volume 1 . Issue 3 . January - March 2018 July - Sept Visit No 3: Aaranya Biosciences Pvt Ltd Date of Visit: 12th February 2018 The Department of Biotechnology arranged an Industrial Visit on 12th February 2018 to Aaranya Biosciences Pvt Ltd, Chennai for the IV Semester Students. Faculty Ms.K.Ramya, AP and Mr.J.Iyyappan, AP, Department of Biotechnology accompanied the students to the visit. In this industrial visit, students learned about the basic experimental studies like SDS PAGE, extraction process and animal studies. Students had a view of advanced equipments and had hands on training on it. This industrial visit gained lot of technical knowledge and practical application. Visit No 4: Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture Date of Visit: 9th March 2018 The Department of Biotechnology arranged an Industrial Visit on 9th March 2018 to Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture, Muttukadu for the IV Semester Students. Faculty Ms.A.Uma Roobini, AP and Ms.M.Nithyananthi, AP, Department of Biotechnology accompanied the students to the visit. Drawing from recent theoretical insights on the circulation of knowledge, this article, grounded in real-world examples, illustrates the importance of ‘the site’ as an analytical heur- istic for revealing processes, movements and connections illegible within either nation-centred histories or comparative national studies. By investigating place instead of project, the study reframes the birth of modern rocket developments in both China and India as fundamentally intertwined within common global networks of science. I investigate four seemingly discon- nected sites in the US, India, China and Ukraine, each separated by politics but connected and embedded in conduits that enabled the flow of expertise during (and in some cases despite) the Cold War. By doing so, it is possible to reconstruct an exemplar of a kind of global history of science, some of which takes place in China, some in India, and some else- where, but all of it connected. There are no discrete beginnings or endings here, merely points of intervention to take stock of processes in action. Each site produces objects and knowledge that contribute to our understanding of the other sites, furthering the overall narra- tive on Chinese and Indian efforts to formalize a ‘national’ space programme.

    About the Speaker Dr Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan completed his BSc with Honours and MSc in Physics from Bombay University and received his Doctorate in Experimental High Energy Astronomy in 1971. His interests include astrophysics, space science and technology as well as science related policies. भारतीय अतं र वान एवं ौयोगक संथान Dr Kasturirangan was with the ISRO for over a period of nearly 35 years including nearly 10 years Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology as its Chairman from 1994-2003. He was a Member, Rajya Sabha (2003-2009) and concurrently the वलयमला, तवनंतपरम Director of NIAS, Bangalore. He served as a Member of the erstwhile Planning Commission (2009- ु Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram 2014). Dr Kasturirangan served the Karnataka Knowledge Commission as its Chairman and was entrusted as the Chairman of the Committee for drafting the new National Education Policy. Presently he is the Chairman, Governing Board, IUCAA, Pune; Chancellor, Central University of Rajasthan; Chairperson, NIIT University, Neemrana; Member, Atomic Energy Commission; Emeritus Professor at NIAS, Bangalore and Honorary Distinguished Advisor, ISRO. Dr Kasturirangan is a Member of several International and National Science Academies. He is a Member of the International Astronomical Union, Fellow of TWAS, Honorary Fellow of the Cardiff University, UK and Academician of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Vatican City. Dr Kasturirangan is the only Indian to be conferred the Honorary Membership of the International Academy of Astronautics. Dr Kasturirangan was the first to occupy the Satish Dhawan Chair of Engineering Eminence (2015- 2017). He also occupied as the Chairman, BG, IIT, Chennai (2000-2005), Chairman, Council, IISc, Bangalore (2004-2015), Chancellor, JNU, New Delhi (2012-17), Chairman, Council, RRI, Bangalore (2000-2016).

    DISTRICT PROFILE - 2017 CHENNAI DISTRICT ORIGIN OF CHENNAI Chennai, originally known as Madras Patnam, was located in the province of Tondaimandalam, an area lying between Pennar river of Nellore and the Pennar river of Cuddalore. The capital of the province was Kancheepuram.Tondaimandalam was ruled in the 2nd century A.D. by Tondaiman Ilam Tiraiyan, who was a representative of the Chola family at Kanchipuram. It is believed that Ilam Tiraiyan must have subdued Kurumbas, the original inhabitants of the region and established his rule over Tondaimandalam Chennai also known as Madras is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, it is a major commercial, cultural, economic and educational center in South India. It is also known as the "Cultural Capital of South India" The area around Chennai had been part of successive South Indian kingdoms through centuries. The recorded history of the city began in the colonial times, specifically with the arrival of British East India Company and the establishment of Fort St. George in 1644. On Chennai's way to become a major naval port and presidency city by late eighteenth century. Following the independence of India, Chennai became the capital of Tamil Nadu and an important centre of regional politics that tended to bank on the Dravidian identity of the populace. According to the provisional results of 2011 census, the city had 4.68 million residents making it the sixth most populous city in India; the urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, was home to approximately 8.9 million, making it the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the country and 31st largest urban area in the world.
