Considering the above quote about his running background, it’s no surprise that he’s such a dedicated running and active living enthusiast. And it should also be no surprise that the 10k has become a family affair for Donald and his son Denzel. Now a senior in high school, Denzel got his start in the Virginia529 Kids Run and is preparing to run the 10k for the tenth time. Running has provided a common bond for the father-son duo, and the 10k has become something they look forward to each year.

Denzel has grown to share his dad’s passion for running, thanks to the example he set and some coaching influence he provided along the way. “I started out running because I saw him running,” Denzel said of Donald’s early impact. “I started to look forward to doing the mile for our physical fitness test [in school]. Then, I was the best in the class. I started training with the high school team, because he helped out with the high school cross country and track teams.”

With Donald being a regular participant in the 10k, it was only natural that Denzel wanted to join him there, and he first took on the one-mile Virginia529 Kids Run—and though he was influenced by his dad, he got a little help from his mom, too. “That is the first race that I ran.
