Why care about podcasting?

Podcasting allows education to become more and more portable. It’s one more way to reach the “echoboomers”.

(They're called "echo boomers" because they're the genetic offspring and demographic echo of their parents, the baby boomers. Born between 1982 and 1995, there are nearly 80 million of them, and they're already having a huge impact on entire segments of the economy.)

Radio content is now distributed via podcasts.

It’s an inexpensive educational tool which appeals to the majority of young learners.

Podcasting puts the learner in control, listening at the owner’s discretion. It allows students to use their technology-based systems for education.

Podcasting is an efficient tool which can be used to deliver the product of the collaborative process.

Benefits of Podcasting In The Classroom

1. Creativity, interactivity, and involvement 2. Accessibility and availability 24/7 3. Podcast are great alternatives for delivering research content or lessons to students who need remedial or extended support 4. Students can create their own podcast to share their learning experiences with each other and also with other students from other schools 5. Teachers can record audio podcast to provide additional and revision material to students to download and review at a time that fits them the best. 6. Podcast can hugely benefit auditory learners and help them in their learning 7. Creating podcast allows students to develop several important skills such as researching, writing, speaking effectively, solving problems, managing time, grabbing attention and improving their vocabulary.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? What inspires you? What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume alone? Describe the color yellow to somebody who is blind. If you were to get rid of one state in the U.S., which would it be and why? You’ve been given an elephant. You can’t give it away or sell it. What would you do with the elephant? If you were 80 years old, what would you tell your children?" How would you design a spice rack for a blind person? How would you describe yourself in three words?

Step 1: PLAN Create a podcast format and content strategy: Format: What’s your podcast going to look like? Content: What’s your podcast going to say?

Key tips:

Think about all the angles or themes or frames for a story. Plan to keep the podcast length to 10-15 minutes. Keep topics moving, and limit topic coverage to 2-3 minutes. Try to use interviews with guests as a way to break up the conversation, pace, and tone of your shows.

Show Outline - Your Table of Contents

Show intro monologue (who you are, what you're going to talk about): 30-60 seconds Intro music jingle (repeat for each show so listeners identify the jingle with your show): 30-60 seconds Topic 1: 3 minutes Topic 2: 3 minutes Interlude (music or break): 30 seconds Topic 3: 3 minutes Topic 4: 3 minutes Closing remarks (thank audience, thank guests, talk about the next show): 2 minutes Closing music jingle (suggest same as Intro music jingle): 2 minutes

Write Your Script

Show Format: Intro: Graphic on the screen Hello and welcome to My Disney Class Podcast, where we Create Classroom Magic. I am Howie DiBlasi and we hope you are having a SUPER-Fantastic day and thank you for joining us.

RYAN I am Ryan Boeckman your co-host. We are inspired by the innovation, creativity, storytelling and magic of Walt Disney - the person and the company. We engage educators with the ideas from the life of Walt Disney and the Disney company in ways that can be applied creatively in the classroom. Learn along with us as we share ways to bring magic into education!

Intro to specific episode:

Hello and thank you for joining us for SEASON 1 Episode 1, of My Disney Class- PODCAST I am your host Howie As a reminder to our listeners our podcasts reflect the philosophy of Walt Disney who said, "Around here, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." And now on with the show.

Talking to Your Audience

There are two voice-over styles for recording your podcast that you should keep in mind when writing your podcast script.

These include polished and freestyle.

Polished professional sounding podcast, is similar to what you might hear in a news cast or documentary. The script is written out and rehearsed prior to recording. Generally this podcast may have particular themes that are explored in sequential order, demanding more structure and precision.

Freestyle recordings are most similar to live radio shows or television interviews. Freestyle is an ad lib, fly-by-the- seat-of-your-pants recording style that can be unpredictable, engaging, and full of chemistry. Hands-On-15 min Each Group
