Wheels Within – Summer 2012

Editorial

Welcome to the Summer edition of your Newsletter. As you peruse this issue you will see that there is certainly a lot of available in our region. I am delighted to be able to include two Summer School adverts. These charitable events help everyone to carry on with some guided yoga practice when many regular classes have closed down for the summer.

As a wonderful introduction to the summer months we have our own BWY Yorkshire yoga day which will herald the Summer Solstice. There is some information about this on the next page and do remember this event is open to everyone.

As Janet mentions in her report, our National BWY Congress was a very successful event. I particularly enjoyed the way Zoe Knott and Bob Insley guided us through the body contortions necessary to attempt and (and I do emphasise the word attempt).

It was wonderful to experience Alistair Shearer’s knowledge and understanding of the Yoga Sutras. He also presented a superb slide show depicting the way Indian art reflects belief in the creation myths first cited in the Rig Veda. Some 17th century paintings he displayed, reflecting the concept of the golden egg within the Ocean of Creation, showed an uncanny resemblance to modern depictions of the Big Bang.

Looking further ahead to our Regional Congress at Cober Hill in December, you will find some information about it in this newsletter.

After a committee discussion we decided to offer members a priority, discounted early booking facility. I have placed a booking form in the centrefold and if you would like to attend Cober, do take advantage of this. Love and Light, Pauline

Report from your Regional Officer

This spring I think our region should be known as the British Wellies of Yorkshire. I am certainly hoping for more May flowers and fewer April showers.

We were lucky with the weather at BWY Congress which was held at Warwick University. Five members of the committee were able to attend and I saw quite a few familiar faces from our region.

There was an excellent choice of tutors this year and I was particularly impressed with Antonia Boyle and the extremely tall Bill Wood. Antonia may be available to come to Cober Hill 2013. As they say, “watch this space”. If you have any suggestions for guest tutors to come along to Cober Hill please let me know.

A requirement of most professional organisations is to attend an Equity and Diversity course and this may soon be a requirement of BWY. I am pleased to announce that Yorkshire will be one of the first areas to provide this new workshop, which is only half a day and contributes towards your CPD points. This will be held, free of charge, at Cober Hill.

I almost forgot – welcome to Jon Pearson who has agreed to act as West Yorkshire County Rep.

I am already looking forward to seeing lots of friends at the Summer Solstice Day of Yoga which Alison Goodwin is organising in York. Remember to book early to avoid disappointment!

That’s all for now.

Love and sunshine,

Janet

Regional Training Officer’s Report

It can’t be time to write a Summer Report for Wheels, it’s 20th April and it’s cold and it’s raining all over Yorkshire. Hmm, maybe it is summer then?

It’s been a strangely quiet time in the Training Department, as there was no Early Yoga for All day to arrange. However, things will start to liven up as we move to the Summer Solstice Yoga day at Wiggington, on 24th June. Alison Goodwin the North Yorkshire County representative is organising the event, which is open to teachers, members and non-members of the Wheel. Our tutor is the very popular Jayadhara.

I do hope that many of you will try and fit this day into your yoga schedule as it will no doubt be as successful as the Days of Yoga held recently (2009 Rosemary Bennett, Bullcroft Memorial Hall, 2010 Amanda Latchmore at Waterton Park, and last year’s lovely day at Cave Castle with Zoe Knott and Hugh Grainger.)

We are progressing through the planned IST days for 2012 and are starting to organise next year’s IST events. Linda Dunne, East Yorkshire County Rep has already arranged for the very popular Anna Semlyen to provide another IST day for East Yorkshire in October 2013 and for Mary Wyvill (Upasana) in May 2013.

Have a Lovely Summer

Insights from Alison Goodwin, a new Yorkshire Yoga trustee After reading the ‘Inspiring New Leaders’ article in the last issue of Wheels Within, I wondered what being a trustee at the BWY Approved Centre would involve. I’d been teaching there for a few years and been very interested in all the diverse classes and activities that run there but had been busy raising my young family so had not been able to get further involved. Also I had seen Laura work so hard and was quite concerned I wouldn’t be able to keep up the pace alongside my family and teaching commitments. However, feeling ready for a new challenge, I decided to go for it and I became a trustee. Learning how the centre works in more detail has been fascinating. I had not truly appreciated the extent to which Yorkshire Yoga relies on volunteers to run classes such as the Able and Enabled Yoga, where wheelchair users experience yoga using specialist equipment to get to the floor. The minibus volunteer brings people to the centre who would not otherwise be able to get there. Special equipment and start-up costs are often provided by external funding which takes volunteer time and expertise to source, apply for, be interviewed for, plus we have to submit monitoring and progress reports to maintain our profile so that we are seen as a serious contender amongst the more conventional, i.e. non-yoga, charities. I am proud that revenue raised in popular evening classes, such as the Pregnancy Yoga class I teach, subsidises some of the daytime classes that are not financially viable because otherwise those people would not be able to reap the benefits of yoga. I rather had the perception before I had a look at the accounts that Yorkshire Yoga was swimming in money from grants and class income but this simply isn’t the case – it’s a true karma yoga project run not-for-profit. Because the expenses for the recent building improvements were greater than the funding we received, we actually have a loss for 2011- 12 and we need to raise money to replace what we used from the ‘emergency reserve’ that is required by the Charity Commission. I have therefore organised the 8 July Dru Yoga Dance Day and a couple of Friday evening workshops as a way to bring extra income in to the centre. Please do come. Also, the Well and Wise Woman workshop on Friday, 27 April was a big success, so I encourage other teachers to have a look at hiring the venue for workshops and one-off events. Yorkshire Yoga is only using Monday-Thursday during term time for its community classes. The rest of the time, it’s available for hire by members of the community. I had a number of enquiries for my workshop via the Yorkshire Yoga website and e-newsletter – this is included in the studio hire and is a big help with promotion. The trustees are in a fantastic place to take the centre forward so that the BWYQ courses and CPD at the centre can flourish, but we could definitely use more volunteer support. Karma yoga opportunities for evening reception, weekday crèche, grant writers, fundraisers, PR people, etc. would allow you to attend a weekly class free of charge and/or enjoy the buzz of being part of a team that achieves something truly remarkable. If you’d like to get involved, please contact me on 01423 864343 or [email protected]

Tibetan Healing Exercises

Maarten Vermaase Yorkshire Yoga & Therapy Centre Sundays 10-5pm 9-10 Halfpenny Close, Knaresborough HT5 OTG Bookings: Dianne Brown 01944 768409 [email protected]

2012 7TH OCTOBER 2013 27TH JANUARY 18TH NOVEMBER 3RD MARCH 9TH DECEMBER 19TH MAY 9TH JUNE

Tibetan Healing Exercises (Kum Nye, Lu Jong and Tsa Lung) derive from Tibetan Medical, Meditation and Yoga traditions. They combine energy yoga, self massage, and pranayama. They aim to develop vitality and balance and can be used for self healing, deep relaxation and preparation for meditation.

This course will present a wide range of Tibetan Healing Exercises and related practices in a structured progression. The principles that underlie Tibetan Healing Exercises have their equivalents within Hatha Yoga and a deepening of personal practice is likely to result. The days will be mostly practical, and will introduce many new exercises as well as review and deepen the experience of familiar exercises. There will be ample opportunity for discussion and feedback. During the morning and later part of the afternoon we will normally work with the Tibetan Healing Exercises and their principles, in the early afternoons we will examine meditation and lifestyle instructions from respectively the Mahamudra and Lojong (Mind Training) traditions.

Maarten Vermaase DCT has studied and practised Yoga and Buddhist Meditation for more than thirty-five years. He is indebted to his teachers, the late Robert van Heeckeren and to Kenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. As Diploma Course Tutor for the British Wheel of Yoga. his reputation, experience and commitment make him a sought-after teacher for nationwide workshops, retreats and courses. Maarten’s carefully structured teaching provides the tools for lifelong practice. His knowledge and guidance is rooted in tradition and draws from personal experience of THE, Meditation and Yoga. A full programme summary is available on request.

The course fee is £470 to be paid in advance (including a booking deposit of £80). Payments can be made in instalments. (An Early Bird reduction of £20 is offered – please send the full deposit asap.) Cheques should be sent to: D Brown, Forester’s House, Birdsall, Malton, North Yorkshire, Y017 9NS.

Have you got AAADD?

I went to the doctor yesterday and have been diagnosed with Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests itself:

I decide to water the pots in my front garden. When I go outside, I look over at the car and decide it needs washing. I go back in the house to get a sponge and the car keys.

When I come back to the front door I notice the newspaper on the hall table. I realise I haven’t read it yet and look through it. Then, I notice the post has been. I put the car keys down and go through the letters.

I put the junk mail in the recycle bin and notice the bin is full. So I decide to put the bills back on the table to take out the bin. But then I think, since I'm near the post box when I take out the bin, I might as well pay the bills first.

I take my cheque book off the table, and see that there is only one cheque left so I go to my desk in my study where I find a bottle of fruit juice I’d left there.

Before I look for my new cheque book, I realise the Fruit Juice will be warm, so I decide to put it in the fridge. I head towards the kitchen when a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye - they need water.

As I put the bottle down on the counter, I notice my glasses, which I've been looking for all morning. I decide I had better take them back to my desk, but first I must water the flowers. I fill a jug with water when I spot the TV remote on the kitchen table.

Tonight, when we go to watch TV we'll be looking for it, so I decide to take it back to the TV room, but first I must water the flowers. I splash some water on them, but some spills on the floor. So I put the remote down to wipe up the spill.

Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

Now, it's the end of the day; I haven’t watered the pots outside, I haven’t cleaned the car, the bills aren't paid, there's only one cheque in my cheque book, I can't find the remote or my glasses and I don't know what I did with my car keys.

I try to work out why nothing got done today, and I'm baffled because I know I've been busy all day and now I'm really tired. I realise this is a problem, and I'll try to get some help, but first I'll check my e-mails.

(Someone sent me this email - I know that there are days when I can identify with it. How about you?)

Please send all cheques to the Editor, made payable to BWY Yorkshire Region

With the growing popularity of Yoga, most advertising pages are booked well before the deadline. To ensure inclusion of your advert, please send your copy early (or book the space required with the Editor). It is often impossible to fit in an extra page at the last minute as the A5 format requires that pages are printed in multiples of four. If you leave it to the deadline, you may well be too late.

All items submitted are subject to editorial amendment where appropriate. If space is short, preference will be given to BWY and regional advertising.

BWY policy now requires that any advertisement for a training course should mention the organization by which it is recognized e.g. BWY, Sports Council, etc. It also states that non BWY events should not be advertised as "can count towards your CPD" or words to that effect. Such statements would detract from the principle that the onus of responsibility is upon teachers themselves to decide.

The BWY is not liable for any loss or damage due to error, late publication or failure of an advert to appear. Whilst every care is taken to check the authenticity of yoga practitioners, the BWY cannot accept any responsibility regarding any specific practices, practitioners or products and readers should investigate these at their own risk.

It is important to note that the views expressed in Wheels Within are not necessarily those of the Editor or the Yorkshire Regional Committee. Wherever possible we try to acknowledge all sources of material used. In case of inadvertent error or omission the Editor will make the necessary correction in a future issue.
