A new year. A fresh start. A year of firsts. As the first graduating class of the new millennium, we have much to celebrate and much chat makes us unique. The firsts started early, as we saw our boys basketball team capture the Group IV Championship in March madness. Now, this year we encounter Mr. Black's first year as principal and welcome almost 30 new faculty members as they begin their careers. The football team played its first night football game, which was a rous ing success. The student body caught baseball fever as the first Subway World Series in 44 years was waged between the Mets and Yankees. Other sports teams celebrated record-breaking seasons, cre ating new standards for others to follow. We realize that we are one-of-a-kind and “one-derful" and we celebrate ... 2001.

Although seniors are the “class of record,” the underclass are still an important part of the social fabric at LHS. Beginning as uncertain freshmen, moving to somewhat knowledgeable sophomores, advancing to confident juniors and concluding as assured seniors, the progression of the underclass men helps students to grow into mature young adults who are ready to take on the world.

(Clockwise) Cousins KIM and TARA pose at the prom. Why are you girls playing in the middle of the street? Mr. Cullari's English class checks out the hallway.

69 The class of 2002 has been very busy this year. With the help of Mrs. Cacioppo they have been raising money for thir prom. Some of the fundraises have been the donut sale in the morning and fundraising candy. They all look forward to being seniors next year.

116 Respect was the net gain for the boys soccer team in the 2000-2001 season. Captain AQUILES QUINTELA was the only senior on the team, and he carried the leadership role well, inspiring the younger players. He led the Tigers with 15 goals scored and received Third Team All-County hon ors for his efforts. The team came together, playing many of the top-rated teams in the state to close matches. The 6-13- 1 record was not indicative of the team’s overall season as the boys gained valuable experience that will serve them well in the future. With juniors CARLOS AREVALO AND ROBERTO BENITES also gaining honorable mention in the All County ratings, the future looks bright for the boys soccer team and they hope to build on this year’s success.

Senior captains JADE TRINH and DANIELA BALOGHOVA and junior PILAR SAL ADORES set the example for the younger players. The girls went into the Union County Tournament with high hopes and JADE TRINH did not disappoint, finish ing 3rd in the county. JADE also qualified for the NJSIAA State Tournament at first singles and played well. The team is look ing very promising, as the experience that they gained this year will serve them well in the future.

121 ONE MORE TITLE 2000-2001 was another successful season for the boys basketball team. After all of the success of last year’s team, the team knew it would be dif ficult to match those accomplishments. There were rough spots along the way, resulting in an overall record of 12-9- The highlight of the season was capturing the Union County Championship, de-throning defending five time champion and state ranked St. Patrick’s 76-59- With experi enced seniors BRANDON BRACEY and GREG PARKER leading the way, the younger players were able to get a taste of varsity level competi tion. ROUNDING THE BASES

It was another successful year for the varsity baseball team. The team finished with a record of 12-11. Competing against diffi cult Watchung Conference com petition, the team showed that it was up to the challenge defeating powerful Westfield, in conference play. The highlights of the season were the tournaments. Strong play got the team into the finals of the Union County Tourna ment, where they fell to Bloom field. But the real highlight was advancing to the third round of the NJSIAA playoffs. While seniors CRAIG BLAZOUSKY AND VINCENZO W EGRZYNEK will be missed, the underclassmen look forward to their time to shine in the future.

They finished with an overall record of 8-7, and had a successful showing against the difficult competition in the Watchung Confer ence. The team is in the midst of a rebuilding process, with only one senior and two juniors competing, so they hope for great things in the future from the younger players. They will look to senior Juan Salgado and juniors Rich Trinh and newcomer Joaquin Valdez for leadership in the 2001 season, and hope for more success.

The girls track team had a very suc cessful season this year led by Coach Devero and Coach Grieco. Their daily practice and dedication led to great success at their meets. Senior SHAKIRA PERTERSON set two school records; one in the 400m run and also one for the 400 intermedi ate hurdles. Also senior AMY SURA won the Union County and Watchung Conference champi onship, along with setting the new school record in the shuttle hurdles. MONIKA SURMA won the Novice Championship in the 400m run. With all the success of this years’ team, the seniors SHAKIRA, MONIKA, AMY, DONNA, AND RIMLA will be missed, but great things are still expected in the future.

143 Making Strides

Success continued for the boys track team in 2001. The boys ran a very com petitive dual meet schedule, finishing 3- 1 against very difficult competition. They also competed in several individual meets, finishing with great results in those as well. The team finished third overall in the counties, but the individ ual accolades were what set the team apart. The shuttle hurdle team ran a school record time, posting the third best time in the state. They also placed first overall at the Westfield Invitational. The 4x400 team was third in the Meet of Champions and first in the Westfield Invitational. Manny Daux (third in 110 hurdles) and Jeff Jasmin (second 400 intermediate hurdles) are senior leaders who will be sorely missed.

CYNOSURE

Cynosure is made up of a group of students who, instead of taking an academic class, volunteer time during the school day to work on the LHS yearbook. The students are mostly seniors with some juniors mixed in. The time they spend is greatly appreciat ed (usually) by Ms. Gergely, and their help is also welcomed. They learn the basics of yearbook layout and design and are able to put their knowledge into practice to produce the yearbook.

One of the benefits of being on the yearbook staff is being able to take silly pictures like these on Club Photo Day!

You have a big heart and you live your life with a true sense of morals and responsibility. Follow your dreams and continue to set your goals. Life has many obstacles to chal lenge one’s spirit. Michelle,

You’ve come a long way, Baby ... But you’ve really just begun. That twinkle in your eyes as a toddler has developed into a sparkle which enlivens a room. It’s been a joy watching you grow and mature. Grow on

With love from those who will always love you!

Kochana Dianko, Patience, understanding, compassion, respect, responsibility, account ability, etc., etc., etc. Not just words of wisdom, but the true measure of maturity, independence and freedom. Adulthood doesn’t come with age, it comes with maturity. Some people mature early, some late, too many never do. You’ve done a great job up to now, but as life gets tougher, don’t allow yourself to get so caught-up that you forget what it’s all about. Always with love, Tata, Mama, Angie, Danny and Tommy

Anthony, Congratulations to our “2001 Graduate"! You are truly one in a million. You never cease to amaze us through the years with all you have done, and I am sure that there is more to follow. Just remember you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Stay focused and you must always believe in yourself. If you ever forget that, we will be there to remind you! TO OUR ONE AND ONLY 2001 SPACE ODYSSEY! Love Always — Mom, Dad, Nick and John

215 Shakeria,

WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!

Today, you may not know all that the world has to offer ... But we know that the world will be a better place because of what you have to offer it.

Hold on to your dreams and never let them go ...

Show the world what we already know. (How wonderful you are.)

Wish on a star that shines in your sky. Take on your problems one by

One and work things out. Rely on all the strength you have inside.

Let loose that sparkle and spirit that you sometimes hide.

Always look on the bright side of things and don’t let adversity keep you down.

Keep God in your life and let his spirit reflect on everything you do!!!

WE LOVE YOU,

Geraldine, John, Sr. John, Jr. and Bruno You’ve made it, Nicky, and you’ve made your family very proud of you!! We wish you all of God’s blessings in the future and hope that you continue to live your life as you have so far. Keep up the good work!! Love, Mom, Dad, and Maria
