One of the most fulfilling moments I have experienced as a teacher at AYA, I have meaningful and fulfilling moments each and every day at AYA. I leave 2017-2018 was when my daughter graduated from AYA and I was blessed enough to my job each day feeling gratified. That feeling is something I do not take for FACULTY MEMBERS be able to place her diploma in her hands. It signified my role not only as granted and it is everything to do with my students. Over the years however, Stephanie Banner, Kindergarten her parent but also as her very first teacher. When I work with my student’s one student stands out to me. This child came into my first grade class parents today, I stress that they are their child’s first teacher. I partner with my lacking the most basic phonics and reading skills. Levels behind her Mary Heath Brown, First Grade parents to educate their children as I did my own. classmates, she was shy, frustrated, and lacking in self-confidence. Shanda Dennis, Fourth Grade Though many days it was difficult to see any progress, towards When my students, discover they can, independently, read a book it never the end of the school year, she was a reader, a learner, and Anthony Gates, After-School Director ceases to amaze me! I relish in their delight and how proud they are of a confident child. She worked so diligently with me and it themselves. As the students and I work together to polish their reading skills Corinne Harper, Second Grade truly paid off. This child had grown not only academically but throughout the year, I know they have gained a life skill no one can take away Karla Jelks, Art personally and spiritually. She helped me to remember that the from them. The sky is the limit! struggle is worth it and that the effort perseverance lead somewhere Ruby Jones, Seventh Grade I was, overwhelmingly, humbled and blessed to have received the Chuck magical. She is why AYA exists and why we work hard each day. Katie Koerten, Sixth Grade Johnson Legacy Award! Chuck Johnson is a Christ-centered man that I To be a recipient of the Chuck Johnston Legacy Award is an honor. To hear have been blessed to know and work beside. AYA houses an unmatched, amazing group of teachers. Every day I work to give Davonté Simmons, Third Grade AYA is Christ-centered with education being the core of our ministry. We are 100% to my students. Now I know that others around me recognize and see that; it is Angela Simpson-Juhan, Pre-Kindergarten able to not only educate today’s youth but place spiritual seeds in them. incredibly gratifying. Kathryn Stanley, Eighth Grade People often ask me about AYA because of its unique model that combines a Paulett Woodruff, Fifth Grade Christian education, parent involvement, teacher dedication, and an expectation of excellence for students who truly deserve a chance at success. I believe that I partner with my parents combination, along with constant support from the greater Atlanta community, gives to educate their children our students an educational experience that can be found nowhere else. “as I did my own. I knew immediately time and efforts to support AYA’s mission... that Atlanta Youth Academy was where I wanted to be. Shortly afterwards, I began volunteering as the school People give where they find a passion—and it is almost librarian. More than ten years later, I am still at AYA and impossible not to be enthusiastic about supporting AYA as excited as ever to be a part of the school. The role that when you have a chance to visit with some of our students I play is minor, but I feel appreciated and respected by the and their families. It would be like trying not to tap your faculty, staff, and students. feet when you hear a great song on the radio—that is the natural reaction! AYA gives students an opportunity which Interaction with the students is so delightful. I discovered will change the trajectory of their lives. And not just their a long time ago that children never outgrow the joy and lives, but their families, and our community. Each and every wonder of listening to and altogether losing themselves in an student is a wonderful story! engaging story. As with any young, non-profit organization, AYA has faced some challenges. At a recent board meeting, we talked about how the Israelites raised a stone monument as Joshua led them across the Jordan and into the promised land to commemorate the long journey of faith they had been on as well as to celebrate the promise of the future. After two decades, AYA is in a similar position—standing on the shoulders of very faithful people and moving forward to claim the promise and honor of raising the next generation of leaders of high character.

Now more than ever, we need for young people to embrace the importance of character and education. AYA provides a powerful foundation of faith in support of both. As Dr King said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. TELL US THE STORY OF HOW YOU GOT TO AYA? My cousin Sythea Lester ‘05 was already attending AYA when we heard of it. Once I arrived at AYA, the small class sizes and close-knit nature was a definite bonus.
