John Michael Talbot's Press Ministry Coordinator Public Relations/Marketing Peggy Lodewyks Michael Zabrocki JohnJohn MichaelMichael TalbotTalbot 479-981-4660 718-551-6884 [email protected] [email protected] Biography . _________________________________________________________________________ It all began with a vision. “God gave me a vision of itinerant ministry going from parish to parish in a time of great need in our culture. I believe that our current ministry is fulfilling that vision. The Catholic Church has nearly died in recent years, but God is raising us to new life in Christ if we will but accept it. We are rebuilding the church one parish at a time, and renewing hearts one life at a time!” The path our Lord has guided John Michael on throughout his life has uniquely prepared him for this time in the Church. After responding to the Lord’s call, God used John Michael to bless millions of lives through his unique and multi-faceted ministry. John Michael Talbot is considered a “Christian Music Legend” being one of the pioneering artists of what has become known as Contemporary Christian Music. He is recognized as Catholic music's most popular artist with over 4 million sales and compositions published in hymnals throughout the world. A respected (and prolific) author, John Michael’s 25th book “The Jesus Prayer” will be published this September 2013 from InterVarsity Press. John Michael leads his very active ministry from the Little Portion Hermitage where he is the founder and Minister General of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity. His artistic and humanitarian efforts have been recognized with awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Gospel Music Association, the Arkansas Hall of Fame, Mercy Corps and the Mother Teresa award. When a fire devastated John Michael’s monastery in April of 2008, John Michael began a new format of itinerant ministry traveling from parish to parish to raise money to rebuild his community’s home. It became clear that God was not only using his ministry to rebuild the monastery but to bring fulfillment to the original vision. Today, John Michael Talbot is one of the most active motivational ministers traveling over nine months per year throughout the world inspiring and renewing the faith of Christians of all denominations through sacred music, inspired teaching and motivational speaking. This new direction has been captured on John Michael’s three-DVD Collection “Nothing is Impossible” released in September, 2012. A “Nothing is Im- possible” spoken word CD and book are planned for release in 2013! Like a modern St. Francis, John Michael Talbot’s ministry is rebuilding God’s Church “one parish at a time, and renewing hearts one life at a time.” For more information, please visit the following websites: www.johnmichaeltalbot.com www.facebook.com/johnmichaeltalbot John Michael Talbot is one of the pioneering artists of what has JohnJohn MichaelMichael TalbotTalbot become known as Contemporary Christian Music. 2 - The Week Ahead • 6 - John Michael Talbot Parish Mission • 7 - Upcoming Events Commyn Cents Our Sunday Scriptures suspect that most of us have Ihad a day or two when we could relate to Qoheleth's feeling of emptiness that he expresses in the Hebrew phrases translated as “Vanity of vanities!” It is human nature to want our work to be productive. Our human nature also leads us to yearn for a sense of fulfillment and purpose in life. Some days leave us wanting and sorrow and grief find their way into our life. Yet, for people of faith, worldly wisdom is insufficient. Psalm 90 as our response helps us to recognize the passing nature of our days on earth. We will return to the dust out of which God created us. We could respond to these truths with the hopelessness of Qoheleth in the First Reading, or we could make the psalmist's words of hope our own and ask the Lord to fill us with his kindness when day breaks (Continued on page 4) INVITE • WELCOME • BUILD • WORSHIP • ENCOURAGE • REACH OUT • ENGAGE 2 • S T . • “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have Mercy on Me, a Sinner.”
“Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” The Jesus Prayer is a rosary. A rosary is any repetitive prayer prayed on a knotted rope or beaded cord. Anyone traveling in the Middle East has seen Orthodox monks walking through the busy markets and praying a rosary. That rosary is the Jesus Prayer. Some might rightly point out that Jesus condemned vain repetitions. Indeed, Jesus taught us the “Lord’s Prayer” or the “Our Father” specifically to teach us not to engage in vain repetitions. (Unfortunately, this sometimes happens with that very prayer when we pray too The Jesus Prayer: A Cry for speedily.) The trick is to pray repetitions with real meaning, not to stop repetitive prayer Mercy, a Path of Renewal altogether! Available September 2013 $16, 144 pages, hardcover Many of the prayers of Orthodox Jews would have required that Jesus pray repetitive prayers. The great Shema Yisrael (“Hear, [O] Israel”) are the first two words of a section of the 978-0-8308-3577-5 Torah and comprise the title (sometimes shortened to Shema) of a prayer that serves as a centerpiece of the morning and evening Jewish prayer services. The first verse encapsulates the monotheistic essence of Judaism: “Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one,” found in Deuteronomy 6:4. Shema means to “hear,” but in a way that is also obedient to what we hear. In English the word obedience comes from the Latin oboedire, which comes from ob (toward) and oeirdire (to hear, listen and do).

  • An Interview with John Michael Talbot
An Interview with John Michael Talbot What first prompted you to write The Master Musician? John Michael Talbot: I was meditating on the parables of Jesus, and asking the Lord how I could teach in a similar fashion. The parables were simple yet almost endless in depth all at once. It struck me that I am a musician, so I could use the craft I know best to tell stories about our life in Jesus and the church. How does this idea of the “Master Musician” resonate with you personally, and how has it played out in your life over the years? The Master Musician: John Michael: Well obviously, I’m a musician, so it is most personal to me. I have found it an ideal vehicle to use some of my own studies in the basic craft of music to relate spiritual Meditations on Jesus lessons in Christ. This is not unlike Jesus using stories about building, farming, or baking Available June 2015 from his basic human experience in Nazareth and Galilee in his lifetime to tell stories about $13, 112 pages, paperback eternal spiritual mysteries. 978-0-8308-3697-0 How do you hope readers use The Master Musician? John Michael: It could be used as a devotional, not unlike how we use parables in our Bible By using the metaphors of music reading today. Like Scripture study, it could also be read straight through on a more this rich devotional writing from intellectual level first, and then doubled back on for deeper spiritual meditation. When I Christian musician John Michael have presented this in spiritual conferences and retreats, most folks learn a lot about music Talbot calls the church to greater as well as their spiritual life in Christ.
