CHS FOOTBALL Tigers on the prowl CHS football hungry for more in ‘18.

By ERIC JACKSON [email protected]

Last year’s exit in the first round of the playoffs didn’t sit well the Tigers. Columbia is back this season to prove its team should be regarded as one of the state’s best. The Tigers return to the field loaded with tal- ent and high expecta- tions for the 2018 season. Columbia aims to capture its first state title in 51 years. The Tigers are more than confident they can accomplish their lofty goal come playoff time. A win over top-ranked IMG Academy in the presea- son classic fueled that notion more. “That was just a sneak- peek,” wide receiver Bobby Fulton said after the game. “I feel like we’re not where we want to be, but we’re pretty good starting off. That should wake some people FILE PHOTOS up and show them what Columbia wide receiver Bobby Fulton scores after stretching out against IMG Academy in the preseason classic. The unit is led by junior quarterback Jordan Smith, who’s coming off a breakout season last year. Smith could rewrite the record books with a star-studded receiving corps, which includes four-star prospect TJ Jones, Marquez Bell, Jaden Williams, Lanadrick Bradley and Fulton. The Tigers also return junior running back Kylen Callum, who’s poised for a big season, now plugged as the team’s starter. Both Columbia’s offense and defense have challenged each other during practice, adding to the fierce competition the team endures on the week-to-week basis. “It prepares us well because we’re not going to see an offense like ours,” linebacker Jaylen Brown said. “With the receivers we have, and the offensive line we Columbia quarterback Jordan Smith delivers a pass. So when we play other teams, they’re going to have a really hard time.” Columbia brings a retooled defensive unit to the field in 2018. The Tigers poised to have Brown back in the lineup after missing most of the last season with a shoul- der injury. He’ll bolster a linebacker group that includes Marlon Pollock and Ethan Umstead. The Tigers’ secondary is also expected to be far improved this season as last year’s newcomers enter the new campaign Columbia’s defensive line prepares to engage IMG Academy’s offensive line during the preseason classic in Bradenton. with added experience in several areas. “Last year, we knew we’d be down defensive- ly, and in certain areas it showed up. Guys have matured now and are a year older (and) are doing things way better. It’s how it’s supposed to work in high school. When you have a team full of soph- omores, some juniors and seniors here in there – you’re going to take your bumps and bruises. FWHS VOLLEYBALL Indians in rebuild mode under new coach By JORDAN KROEGER [email protected]

FORT WHITE — A new coach and a new attitude. Fort White’s volleyball team is looking to make a jump in 2018. Under the tutelage of new head coach Deanna Conner, the Lady Indians believe they can improve upon last season’s 5-12 season and their last-place tie in District 4-5A. Conner replaced Kali Hunter, who stepped down after three seasons, and has instilled a new culture in the gym that she hopes will leads to more wins. “I think the girls are really starting to unite and come together now that cuts have been made,” Conner said. “I think they’re going to jump. I think they’ll jump quick because I’ve kind of backed them up and started them all on the same territory. They’re just going up from here.
