1 Roundabout March 3, 2020 Next Week Our next Celebration of Service will be March 10 in the IMU Georgian Room. We will hear from clinical neuroscientist and athletic trainer Seisuke Kawata on the frontiers of research at IU on repetitive head impacts in sports. Dr. Kawata is an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology in the School of Public Health. He also is a faculty member in the neuroscience program. During his undergraduate years at Henderson State University in Arkansas, he worked as an athletic trainer with the NFL Detroit Lions, MLS Sporting Kansas City, ESPN Wide World of Sports, and MLB Atlanta Braves. While earning his Ph.D. at Temple University, he conducted a series of clinical neuroscience studies to study the effects of repetitive head impacts, referred to as sub-concussions. His current work centers on blood biomarkers and the ocular-motor system to evaluate acute and chronic changes from sub-concussive head impacts. His laboratory at Indiana University is currently conducting a wide array of research in both field and laboratory settings in sports and military cohorts, aiming to understand the short- and long-term effects of sub-concussive brain damage and to establish clinical guidelines to prevent chronic brain deficits in athletes and military service members. Rotarians in the News Long-time Rotarian Bob Zaltsberg will be inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in Indianapolis on May 16. Dr. Judy DeMuth, superintendent of Monroe County Community School Corporation, announced her retirement at the end of this school year. Henk Haitjema is recovering from major surgery and will soon be able to have visitors.

The dejected tone of so many young songwriters seemed out of context in the late 1990s, when the economy was booming, wars were receding and the world was one huge party. They seemed to reflect a lack of confidence in society, in politics and, ultimately, in life itself. First there was the musician who could claim the title of founder of this school in the old days of the new wave. Mike Gira (2) basically continued the atmospheric work of latter-period Swans. His tortured soul engaged in a form of lugubrious and apocalyptic folk, which constituted, at the same time, a form of cathartic and purgatorial ritual. After his solo album Drainland (1995), which was still, de facto, a Swans album, assisted by Jarboe and Bill Rieflin, Gira split the late Swans sound in two: Body Lovers impersonated the ambient/atmospheric element, while Angels Of Light focused on the orchestral pop element. On the one hand, Gira crafted the sinister and baroque layered instrumental music of Body Lovers' Number One Of Three (1998) and the subliminal musique concrete of Body Haters (1998).

Throughout his musical career of 12 plus years under his given name, Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co., he has lived in 9 different locations and has had a dozen different backing bands on record in as many different recording environments. Fading Trails represents 3 of these incarnations and 4 of these environments. Composed of recording sessions Molina and company did with Steve Albini at his Electric Audio Studio, David Lowery at his Sound of Music Studio, and at the famous Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, Fading Trails also features songs from the home recorded Shohola sessions. The essence of these recordings were extracted to create one cohesive being and thus defining what Magnolia Electric Co. truly is. Something that is hard to define. One head, multiple bodies...the opposite of a hydra head.
