Delivery of the 25-metre-long triangular sections of steelwork to the construction site in Hamworthy was another step towards the opening of Poole’s much-needed second harbour crossing in early 2012. A 500 tonne crane was needed to move each 40 tonne section of steel into position ready for assembly as the fi rst of the bridge’s two lifting spans. Jim Bright, Strategic Director, said: “This delivery marked a truly exciting phase in the construction of the Twin Sails Bridge. We can begin to see how the sheer size of the lifting leaves will give this iconic landmark a central presence on Poole’s skyline.” Once built, the bridge deck and iconic Twin Sails will be made up of 41 sections of steel being manufactured by Cleveland Bridge UK Limited in Darlington. Installation of the decks and lifting leaves will take place during the summer. For more information visit boroughofpoole.com/twinsails

A rowing boat took over from the rope ferry and this service ran on demand well into the 1950s. It wasn’t until 1837 that the fi rst bridge opened. This was a wooden toll-bridge and in 1884 it cost 1/2d for Courtesy of Poole Museum Service every bullock, ox or cow to cross.
