Association Football Has Long Been the Dominant Sport in the Lower Reaches of the Sirhowy Valley
THE HISTORY OF ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL IN YNYSDDU AND CWMFELINFACH (REVISED JULY 2012) Association football has long been the dominant sport in the lower reaches of the Sirhowy Valley. Geographically, the main catchment area is from Pontllanfraith, south-east to Wattsville in the county borough of Caerphilly. This comprises of the two larger villages of Cwmfelinfach and Ynysddu, together with the three smaller villages of Gelligroes, Wyllie and Brynawel. To fully understand the present structure of the club, it is important to go back to the turn of the 20th century, when football first started in this area, at the same time as the opening of the many collieries, and locally, the most significant of which was Nine Mile Point (initially called Coronation Colliery). Situated between Brynawel and Cwmfelinfach, owners Burnyeat & Brown sunk the first shaft in 1902. The first football club, initially called Ynysddu Albion, was founded by Mary Jane Gilchrist, the local midwife, in July 1905, later ratified by a general meeting in the Black Prince public house at Ynysddu, in October of that year. An article in the South Wales Argus, stated that five sons of Mrs Gilchrist took part in their first game. Unfortunately, fixtures and results for this initial period cannot be accounted for. A number of other local teams were also formed although the ‘Albion’ were regarded as the main club, becoming one of the founder members of the Monmouthshire Senior League in 1907 (four years before the foundation of the Monmouthshire County Football Association). The ‘senior’ team would play its fixtures in the ‘Mon Senior’ and Sirhowy leagues, whilst other teams of various names would play in the Newport & District and ‘West Mon’ leagues.

The largest under-representation is recommended to be 24% above the proposed county average in Aberbargoed and Bargoed. KELLY’S DIRECTORY of RISCA, 1891 (including PONTYMISTER, CROSS KEYS and PONTYWAIN) RISCA is a parish and village in the valley between the lofty Twyn Barlwyn (Maen) and the Machen mountains, on the Monmouthshire canal, which runs through the parish, and on the Western Valleys section of the Great Western railway, which here forms a junction with the Sirhowy line. There are stations at Risca village and Cross Keys, both in the parish, which is 165½ miles from London and 6½ northwest-by-west from Newport, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Wentloog, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Newport, Newport rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry end Llandaff diocese. The parish is governed by a Local Board of 9 members. The district was formed in 1878 of Risca and parts of Upper and Lower Machen, and by a Local Government Provisional Order No. 12, 157, confirmed by Act 44 & 45 Vict. cap. cii. parts of Mynyddyslwyn were added. The village is lighted with gas by a company reformed in May, 1890. A company is now (1891) being formed to supply the parish with water. The church of St. Mary, rebuilt in 1853 on the ancient foundation, is an edifice of stone, in the Florid Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower at the south-east angle with spire, containing one bell: there are 400 sittings, 150 being free. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1736; marriages 1754; burials 1779. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £110, gross yearly value £350, with residence and 45 acres of glebe, the gift of the vicar of Bassaleg, and held since 1876 by the Rev.

This new benefice (Ministry Area) offers an exciting opportunity to develop collaborative ministry and mission. The parishes are growing closer together, realising the benefits of sharing resources, skills and the desire to grow spiritually and numerically. They would like to extend their existing mission and should the Diocesan Bid to the Church in Wales Evangelism Fund be successful, more financial support for mission will be heading to the Valleys. The Benefice has an excellent NSM Associate Minister in Elizabeth Jones and lay ministers, who are very much looking forward to working in the newly created team. The Diocese had committed to funding a 0.5 fte post of Team Vicar to serve the whole benefice, but to live in the parsonage at Rhymney. We expect the new Team Rector (TR) to take a full part in this appointment and we hope to advertise swiftly following the TR’s licensing. However, this post is not without its challenges. These are the same challenges faced by the whole of the Archdeaconry, which covers the eastern post-industrial valleys of South Wales. All our communities face issues relating to poverty and deprivation, but we work hard together to address and tackle these issues.

“Merthyr Express” 3 January 1942 Parish Church Services were held on Christmas Day. The preacher and celebrant was the Rev. J. L. White (vicar) and the organists were Mr. W. P. Lawrence (Mus. Bac.) and Mrs. Norman Palmer. Musical Success Brynmor Jones, son of Mr. T. H. Jones, 3, Upper-row, Pantywaun, was successful in passing the Advanced Intermediate Examination in pianoforte playing at the recent examination of the London College of Music held at Cardiff. Singing Festival The united Christmas singing festival of Nazareth and Noddfa Baptist Churches was held at Noddfa Chapel on Christmas Day and a high standard of singing was attained. The conductor was Mr. D. J. Thomas, and the organists were Mrs. Katie D. Walters and Mr. D. J. Davies. Mr. Trevor Lawrence presided in the morning session which was given over to the children, and the devotional part was taken by Moira Ballard and Margaret Davies. The afternoon president was Mr. W. H. Jones, with the devotional part taken by Jas. A. Price. The evening president was Mr. T. J. Jones. The devotional part was taken by Miss Edna Evans Jones. Carmel Chapel On Christmas Day the usual cymanfa ganu was held when the conductor was Mr. T. Walters, A.L.C.M. with Mrs. Annie Davies the organist. The singing was of a high standard the choir responding well to the conductor. The morning was devoted to the children and was introduced by Mr. S. Lewis. The devotional part was taken by Nan Jones and Amy Thomas; solos were rendered by Eleanor Davies and Huw B.
