3 The INCOMING RESOURCES COLLEGE 2015/16 FINANCIALS

n 2015/6 the College continued its programme of improving and extending its facilities. We finished the first part of the long project with Fairfield Residential Home under which they will build a new residential home for elderly people, and the College acquired Ithe freehold of 115 Banbury Road. This will now give an opportunity to reflect on the potential that the College could unlock with a revived and £17.3 invigorated north Oxford site. million The College also acquired two houses on the Iffley Road and a former convent at Harberton Mead (near the John Radcliffe Hospital) in order to be able to make more accommodation available to undergraduates and graduates. We expect such opportunities as the convent’s one-acre site to be increasingly scarce and sought after and see it also as a sound store of value for the future.

The EU referendum, the US Presidential election, and the Italian referendum show a strong tide of political change, the extent and impact of which is still unclear. The College has a conservative, low- volatility, investment strategy with a long time horizon. It holds significant liquid resources for prudential purposes to provide a stable platform for £13.2 its academic objectives. At time of writing, it is uncertainty rather than million necessarily threatening outcomes that characterise the environment. The College is mindful that change may bring operational challenges as well as investment challenges and seeks to ensure that it remains in a position to respond in a considered way to external opportunities and threats. Through an excellent team of advisers and through engagement with Old Members we seek to remain aware of the possibilities the environment brings.

The moral support, advice, and generosity of Old Members and other 42% Tutorials (academic operations) supporters is of the greatest importance to the College. Thank you for your support in this year. 35% Running costs 17% Investment management 6% Alumni relations and Fundraising

5 ANNUAL FUND GIFTS 2015/16 IN 2015/16, BY AREA: ANNUAL FUND t has been another record-breaking year, as Old Members contributed £1,165,000 in new gifts and pledges in support of Univ. This record-breaking sum was raised by the collective donations of 2,358 Old Members around the globe – in total, I34% of Old Members made a contribution, demonstrating once again Total raised: the loyalty and generosity of Univ alumni.

This wonderful sum will help the College to enhance the opportunities £1.16 million and education it offers to graduates and undergraduates, ensuring that the College is able to attract and retain the best students regardless of their financial background, and continue to rival the top universities worldwide. 58% of this year’s gifts were unrestricted, allowing the College to apply these funds to the area of most urgent need, while the other donations were allocated towards a wide range of important areas, from financial support and bursaries to building renovation and tutorial teaching. Undesignated 58.64% Univ’s graduates and undergraduates are grateful to all Old Members Postgraduate Scholarships 15.31% who supported them this year, and in particular to the 1,064 alumni Student Support 10.10% who took the time to speak to students personally during our Buildings & Facilities 5.16% telephone campaigns in January and April. Our telephone campaigns raised over £417,000, as 72% of those we spoke to chose to make a Non Postgraduate Scholarships 5.05% donation, and many alumni also contributed valuable career advice and Tutorial Support 3.89% insights for current students. Other 1.85%

6 We are also grateful to the class of 1966, whose Golden Reunion weekend event was a great success and who collectively raised over £100,000 in support of their fiftieth anniversary fundraising appeal. This appeal will allow the College to establish a new fund, the 1966 Academic Opportunities Bursary Fund, to enable students to undertake activities such as internships and research in their vacations, removing financial impediments and enhancing students’ academic life and career opportunities.

The College would also like to thank its Young Univ community, as this year alumni aged 35 and under collectively donated a phenomenal £103,000, almost 10% of the Annual Fund total. The Young Univ programme continues to go from strength to strength with a variety of events taking place throughout the year, and we are delighted that so many of our young alumni have chosen to support the College so generously this year.

On behalf of all of us here at Univ, thank you to each and every one of our donors for your loyalty and generosity. I hope that you will choose to support the College again in the coming year, and that we will have an opportunity to welcome you back to Univ at an event in the near future.

FROM JOSIE TURNER, ANNUAL FUND MANAGER
