CANADA JCI SENATE LE SENAT JCI DU CANADA NEWSLETTER - FALL 2018 FIRST THINGS FIRST SENATE WEB PAGE I have been in conversation with our Web Master, Senator Jackie Ward and it is time to upgrade our web page. Presently it is hosted on a old Mac and is a web page program that is obsolete and needs to be dealt with. We could of course pay a firm to re- do the web page in a more modern web page format, but I am reaching out to see if there is a Senator that might like to take this on? Doing it “gratis” would be nice but the Senate does have resources to do this upgrade, so lets hear from you. On going admin of the site is not the issue right now, just the launch of a new page. PRESIDENT - BLAIR FRASER 36336 ([email protected]) Gloria and I spend 5 weeks in Hawaii each year and that gives us the opportunity to spend time with the Hawaii JCI Senate and Old timers. We go to their famous Thursday karaoke, special Friday banquet and Saturday dinner while there. They are a very welcoming group. They also include all past Jaycees to their group, it is not exclusively Senators, which I think is splendid. I was also able to spend time with the US JCI Senate President Pete Reinecker, 11777 and his wife Lynn. L-R Blair, Gloria, Doug, Wendy, Lynn, Pete The new year is well underway and hopefully the deep freeze that the country is under lifts soon and the birds start singing. The next Crew Meeting / Annual Meeting will be in Vernon in September of this year. The program is going to be great and I am confident there will be a good mix of Senators from a wide genre of senate numbers. The Senate will be looking for a future executive members, members with a vision of how the organization should look like in the immediate years. No looking back, just forward! We are still mulling over getting the roster into a PDF format that Senators can take advantage of. Posting it on the web site makes most sense but I think the web site would need some security features at that point, let me know your thoughts? Gloria and I will be on a world cruise starting in April going from Barcelona to Singapore and I am hoping that I can connect with a Senator or two along the way. I already know that Senator Jan-Alrid Knutsen from Norway (now living in Spain) will also be on board that cruise. SPOT LIGHT ON SENATOR JIM WARE, 27774 Looking back on my Jaycee experiences, I thought it might be good to back up a little further to relate them to what I call Circle of Life situations or coincidence if you like. I was born, raised and educated in Toronto and the surrounding area, participating in some sports and joining the Boy Scouts where I achieved the highest level of Queen Scout. In my final year of high school I became involved in my first election experience when I ran for and was elected Treasurer of the Student Council. Following my graduation from Sheridan College with a Graphic Arts & Design Diploma I was off to Pembroke in Northern Ontario to teach high school art for one year. Returning to the Toronto area I spent about a year doing a couple of odd jobs. Then 1971 became a pivotal year for me. In February I began what would become a 30 year career with Ontario Hydro. Then in September I began my Jaycee experience with the Toronto chapter. PAGE 1 SPOT LIGHT ON SENATOR JIM WARE, 27774 - CON’T One of the first projects was helping to create Boy Scout units in the area. The project was about to be cancelled when I took over as chairman. Within 6 months we had created both a scout troop and a cub pack. Over the next few years in Toronto I was involved in numerous projects and events, was elected to the Board of Directors 3 times. Interesting note, of the first board I was on 11 of 17 members are senators. I was chosen Jaycee of the Month and was honoured with the Governor General Roland Michener Award as Toronto's Jaycee of the Year. At the regional level I served as Communications Manager and was also elected for one term as Executive Regional Director. I was chosen Regional Jaycee of the Year and Regional Senator of the Year the following year. At the national level I served as co-chairman National Awards program. The highlight of one's Jaycee experience is achieving senatorship. I was honoured to receive mine from World President Kumar Gera and Canada's National President David Robart Morgan at a Toronto dinner meeting attended by more than 200 Jaycees from the Central Region including the likes of Bud Hoffman (Senator #71) and Harry Smith (Senator #111). After my active Jaycee years, one of the things I became involved with was returning to Boy Scouts as Group Committee Chairman for 3 years in the local unit . One other note relating to my Circle of Life, a project that the Toronto chapter did was building cabins at children's camps. One was at Camp Huronia for diabetic kids which one of my 7 granddaughters has been to. FROM MOLLY ZIOLA - FRIENDSHIP 1 ABOUT BARNEY ZIOLA 14018 HI BLAIR – The latest report we have on Barney is that he has a Hemophilia condition. He has been having several blood transfusions but they have stopped today. Now they wait to see if this new blood will repair his damaged blood system. Looking to at least another one to two weeks in St. Paul’s Hospital. He has a bedside phone and is welcoming calls from his buddies. Phone number is 604-684-6532 – Ext. 67707 His attitude is positive and jovial. Thank you for caring – Molly FROM LAURA KELLY ABOUT HARRY WELDON, 5881 HARRY WELDON 613-816-8658 WEST END VILLA 2179 Elmira Dr (door code is 2179) Ottawa K2C 3S1 613-829-3501 It was suggested that I resend my note, in a simpler format, about how West End Villa works as far as visitors go: 1. Plan to meet Dad on the 5th floor at the nursing station 1.b If you are ill, please cancel your visit. 2. Park in visitors parking (2179 Elmira Dr) 3. When you get to the door, use the coded entry with number 2179. 4. Sign in using the binders found on the table near the elevators 5. Go up to the 5th floor (nursing station is on the left when you get off the elevator) 6. If going out over breakfast or supper, ask at the nursing station if any medications are to be sent with him 6.b Dad uses both a walker and cane that need to travel with him & he has an accessible parking pass you may use 7. Sign Dad out at the nursing station on the 5th floor (they will bring Dad's 'big binder') 8. Record in the binder the approximate time of return 9. Sign yourself out at the front door then go and enjoy 9.b Ensure any medications are taken. 10. Upon return, park in visitors parking 11. Take Dad back up to the 5th floor. 12. Sign Dad in at the nursing station 13. If meds were sent with Dad and not taken, inform the nursing station Opportunities to see Dad: The home is available to visitors at any time but doors are locked at 9pm. Drop in Friday mornings (8am-9am) for 'restaurant style' breakfast - a complete breakfast for under $5! Take him to a POGG event, take him to church (Christ Church Bells Corners). Eat with him at West End Villa (WEV) or take him out to eat. Bring your pet to visit - though, you'll likely get a following of other residents. Volunteer at the home: provide entertainment - music, magic, comedy. Join in an activity with him at the home. Help with typing up Dad's book (I can provide what he's completed) and of course, he's happy to just sit and chat I imagine there is a process to doing any of the above in the home. When visiting, ask the staff what the process is. other info: 1. Now using a landline : Dad's number is 613-816-8650 2. If Dad isn't signed out when leaving WEV, staff will look for him throughout the home. When they've looked through the home without success, they call the power of attorney (aka me) and if no luck there, the next step is the police. Then, of course, it ends up on the radio and tv that a senior has gone missing. So, please, let's try to reduce that possibility. 3. WEV also wants an idea of how long he would be out and if he will be missing any meals 4. Depending on the timing, they will give him his medications before he goes out or may give them to the person taking him out. PAGE 2 FROM LAURA KELLY ABOUT HARRY WELDON, 5881 - CON’T 5. To have a meal with him at the home, give the staff a couple of hours notice. Meals are $7, I believe, and you just pay at meal time. They would serve the two (or more) of you in a room separate from the dining room where you have some privacy.
