Geographically, it belongs to Central Greece, in the prefecture of Fokida. It is situated just 7 n. m. from Peloponese and 240 km from Athens. This proximity to the capital and Patra, has made Trizonia island the ideal travel destination for short getaways from the city. No cars and motors are allowed in the island. Around the island there are three more uninhabited islands, Ag. Giannis, Prasoudi and Planemi. This unknown island has a beautiful natural port, a marina for luxurious yachts. Along the coastline are found traditional taverns, restaurants and cafes to relax and enjoy the magical landscape. You can choose one of the protected, from the winds, beaches of the bay to swim or walk. Nikos O. It is a large and fertile island and has everything to offer to the visitor: impressive landscapes, endless golden sandy beaches with clear water, a Marine Park for the protection of the sea-turtle Caretta-Caretta, beautiful mountains covered with pine-trees forests, traditional villages, an interesting capital, several animated beach resorts, orthodox churches inspired of the western architectural style, archaeological sites, Venetian castles.. It has beautiful sandy Neorio beaches with crystalline Pera Pigadi waters which attract thousands of visitors every year. NAVAGIO Also it is famous for the endangered species of the sea turtle Caretta-Caretta which comes during the reproduction period to lay their eggs on the soft golden sand beaches of the island. The island is located south of Kefalonia. the third largest of the Ionian Islands, covers an area of 410 km2 (158 sq mi) and its coastline is roughly 123 km (76 mi) in length. The island is named after Zakynthos, the son of a legendary Arcadian chief Dardanus. The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin NAVAGIO (SHIPWRECK) Another worthwhile sight on Zakynthos, which has made the rounds of the island through postcards that represent it on every occasion, is the Navayio (Shipwreck or Smuggler's Cove) on its west side. Definitely one of the most famous and the most Stavros photographed beaches of Greece. Vertical rocks towering over a rusty shipwreck abandoned in the middle of the beach (it was wrecked in 1983 while it was carrying smuggled cigarettes) with the blue CAVES AREA Ionian sea in the background stimulate the imagination and create images from times long past. Don't miss it! KERI NikosNikos O. Papadakis O. Near the village is a lighthouse from where the view toward two enormous white rocks (Megali and Mikri Myzithra), which jut up from the sea like pyramids, is wonderful. From Keri Lighthouse you can also admire the most fantastic sunset and the wild beauty of this side of the island. Neorio Pera Pigadi CAVES AREA / Keri You will also have wonderful impressions in the famous caves of Keri with their emerald waters. But this presumes an excursion by sea which will give you the opportunity to admire the Kamares of Marathia which the rocks have formed over the sea under which rowboats pass. The Keri and Caves area offers one of the best spots for scuba diving anywhere in the Mediterranean. On the way to the North of the island (about 25 km from Zakynthos town), Makris Yialos has a wide sandy and pebble beach which is very good for snorkelling. Some small caves have been formed by the waves on the cliffs. In the past this beach was a secret haunt, but now thanks to the new coast road, it is very crowded in the high season. The beach can't be called organised, but there are some sunbeds and umbrellas. You can also Stavros find a tavern over the beach. MARATHONISSI The island of Marathonisi in Laganas bay, nesting area of Caretta-Caretta. It has the shape of a turtle. Once it was joined with Marathias cape 1 mile MARATHONISSI away. Marathonissi also includes two small islands called the Pontikonisia. The vegetation is thick with pine-trees and the green oak trees. There are two beaches on Marathonissi. On the one side there is the beach with golden sand where the turtle Caretta Caretta lay their eggs while on the second you will find a beach with pebbles and two small sea caves which you can visit. It has smaller, sandy bays with less tourism and therefore offers calmness. The region has some tourist development, but the nature of the scenery is untouched. A nearby beach is Amoudi, which is worth visiting. It is at Alikanas where Mycenean vessels have been found, and which many believe is one of the most likely sites for the ancient town of Arcadia. ALYKES Alykes lies 22 Km from Zakynthos town and offers Neorio an amazing, big, wide and Pera Pigadi safe sandy beach. Alykes CAVES AREA / Keri name comes from the salt MARATHONISSI mines, situated behind the beach. It is a crowed resort with plenty of choices for sea sports. In the picture the Porto Roma lies in the Vassilikos area at a distance of about 17 Km from picturesque bridge at Alykes Zakynthos town. It is a sandy beach. It is justly considered as one of the most bay. known and beautiful beaches of Zakynthos. Crystal blue water and greenery coming up to the sea. Just like at the other beaches of Vassilikos, you will also find here traditional taverns and small bars. The beautiful beach of Agios Sostis is situated between Laganas and Keri. It is the natural continuance of Laganas? cosmopolitan beach. The shallow and crystal clear waters of Agios Sostis make it the perfect choice for families with small children. Many young people and couples choose the beach, as it is only 1 km from the cosmopolitan resort of Laganas. Bars, cafes and restaurants cover the coastal road, while the surrounding area has all the facilities to make your holidays unforgettable. Hotels and rooms to let offer a comfortable stay. The local market has everything you might need. The small island of Agios Sostis is in the cove of Laganas. It was named after the church of Agios Sostis. The island was connected to Zakynthos until 1663, when an earthquake separated them. Today the island can be reached through a small bridge. The island of Agios Sostis is extremely beautiful with dense vegetation and caves that impress every visitor. Nikos O. It is located between Lefkada and Zakynthos. The Greek Island has many wonderful beaches with fine sand and turquoise, bleach-like, waters specific to the island. Others of its many beauties are its picturesque villages, its National Park on its highest mountain (Mount Ainos) on which a rare specie of fir forest grows and terrific landscapes. Myrtos Beach This section has everything about the island. Kefalonia was named for the mythological figure Cephalus, although some believe that the name refers to the shape of the island, and insist that it means “island with a head”. Kefalonia’s capital is Argostoli. Argostoli was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, with only a few houses remaining, as well as the arched bridge that reaches across the lagoon and the obelisk at its center, which now commemorates the date of its construction. The earthquake in 1953 actually destroyed practically the entire island of Kefalonia, leaving only Fiscardo in the north unscathed. The next largest town on Kefalonia is Lixouri. There you will find a lovely 19th Assos century mansion turned museum and traces of the ancient city of Pali. The beaches to the south of Lixouri are among the very finest in Greece. On the east side of the island are the pebbled beaches of Poros, Sami, and Agia Efimia. Kefalonia is an island that impresses every visitor with its unseen natural beauties, historic monuments and hospitality of residents. Green verdurous landscapes, abrupt slopes, lacy shores, golden beaches, gulfs, small ports and graphic ports.

A comparison of ant fauna of Zakynthos with ant fauna of Samos islands is presented. Both islands have similar surface area (405.6 versus 476.4 km2) and are placed almost on the same latitude (37°) but represent the most western and the most eastern fauna complexes in Greece; 78 species and morphospecies were recorded from both islands but only 23 species are common. Key words: ants, Greece, East Aegean Islands, Samos, faunistics, taxonomy. INTRODUCTION Zakynthos is a Greek island placed in the Ionian Sea. • Greek Maritime History of the 18Th Century: a New Project
185 K ATERINA P A P A K ONSTANTINOU / A THENS Greek Maritime History of the 18th Century: A new project In a symposium organised in memory of Professor Gunnar Hering, I feel that it is most appropriate to discuss commerce and transport in the northern Balkans, for it is pertinent to my PhD thesis, initiated at the Institut für Byzantinistik und Neogräzistik. Exactly ten years ago, at the very beginning of my PhD course, it was Professor Gunnar Hering along with Professor Olga Katsiardi-Hering who suggested that I focus my research on a particu- lar collection of documents, preserved within the National Archives of Hungary, that concerned the activities of Greek merchants in the northern Balkans and Hungary in the second half of the eighteenth century.1 How- ever, after I completed my PhD I did not have the opportunity to continue my research on this subject, and, to my surprise, I changed the area of my research from the terrestrial to the maritime commerce. One may, of course, say that where the roads end the sea routes begin, and that commerce cannot be limited by borders of any kind. Products from the hinterland were carried on donkeys and horses to ports, wherefrom they were loaded on ships to be transported to other ports. In certain cases, traders had the opportunity to choose between the cara- van of donkeys and the ship as means of transport. Most interesting is the case of Ragusa/Dubrovnik, which until the early eighteenth century was the main port of export of the produce of the Balkans to Italy.
