Meganisi actually means "the largest" and this is because it is the largest of the small islands here in this area. In between the capital Nidri on Lefkas and the island of Meganisi there are several smaller islands like Sparti, Skorpidi and Skorpios / Scorpios (also known as Onassis island).

Meganisi has many small and very nice beaches. The best known beaches are Spilia Beach, Ambelakia Beach, Agios Ioannis Neorio Beach, Pasoumaki Beach, Atherinos and Limonari Beach. Two miles from Nydri, beyond Madouri, is the Neorio most famous of these islands: Skorpios, owned by Aristotle Onassis.

Onassis purchased it in 1963 and since then the island has been featured in all the magazines and newspapers of the world, as the playground of the rich and famous and the jet set from far and wide, and has known moments of glory, but also of great grief. Now it just waits silently to see what its fate will be. North of Skorpios is the island of Scorpidi, belonging to the Livanos ship-owning family.

That such a location could be a small island off south western Greece, surrounded by opal seas and boasting lush green hills, empty beaches, two quiet harbours and scarcely more than 50 permanent residents, would make the suggestion seem frankly far-fetched. Yet this is the reality of Kastos. Neorio Kastos is located close to larger and long- established boating and holiday home destinations such as Ithaca, Kefalonia, Lefkada and Meganissi; it is separated from its neighbouring island of Kalamos by a deep channel.

Just eight kilometres long and, even at its widest, only 1,200 metres across, Kastos has a huge appeal to all forms of boating and yachting enthusiasts.

Port Kastos, the main harbour, offers safe mooring and has several tavernas. To the south of Kastos there are bays and inlets that are perfect for nautical exploration and overnight mooring alike.

The name is thought to be derived from 'Pax', which meant 'slate' in their language. Romans, Crusaders, Venetians and later French and British were among the rulers of the island. The Starfish Story There was a young man walking down a deserted beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a frail old man. As he approached the old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. The young man gazed in wonder as the old man again and again threw the small starfish from the sand to the water. He asked, "Old man, why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time." The old man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. "But there must be thousands of beaches and millions of starfish!" exclaimed the young man. "How can you make any difference?" The old man looked at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it to the safety of the sea. He said, "It makes a difference to this one!".
