DISCUSSION, PuntWG Publieksingang t.o. WG‐plein 80 18 october 18:00 ‐ 19:00 With the Nan Hoover Foundation

Nan Hoover (1931 NYC ‐ 2008 ) is a pioneer of video and performance art. Since the early 1970s in her performances, video works and light installations she explored the language of minimalism through light and the durational aspects of various media.

Time, space, silence, light are key aspects of her focus in powerfully slow, silent videos and performances as well as installations and . In the Fall of 2014 we present a program of exhibitions, performances, and screenings focused on the influence of Nan Hoover. The exhibitions and events will take place over a 5 week period at the Wilhelmina Gasthuis (WG) Terrein, , NL where Nan lived and worked for many years. Venues include the LIMA hall and the Punt WG exhibition space, among others. Participants include a local and international group of Nan’s former students and colleagues as well as artists who have been indirectly influenced by her work. Building around key aspects of Nan Hoover’s focus in art making, Time, Space, Silence, Light will feature photographic and video work by the artist contextualized with those of a select group of her many students, colleagues, and peers. Her performance works and light installations for which she is well known will be addressed by participating artists working in those media and will also be included in discussion and video programs.

Nan moved from NYC to Amsterdam NL in the early 70s, making it her home for close to 30 years. Her later years were spent in Dusseldorf and Berlin. Her works have been presented worldwide including in the 1987 and 1977 Documenta exhibitions in and at major museums including MoMA, NYC and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Nan’s influence on several generations of artists can be traced through her art making and in her role as Professor at the Dusseldorf Art Academy, Das Arts and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and the San Francisco Art Institute, among many others.

Known primarily for her media work, Nan was indeed a video pioneer, experimenting with the video camera as a tool for artmaking. She was also an avid explorer of a broad range of materials and new technologies throughout her career. We will touch upon the breadth of her oeuvre ‐ photo work, , installation, , performance, as well as video. To do her work justice would require a museum’s worth of space. Given the more modest venues that the WG Terrein allows, we hope this program will, like Nan herself, serve as a catalyst to others: to connect with, appreciate and further explore the work and influence of this extraordinary artist.

This program would not be possible without the volunteer time and efforts of Christina Della Giustina, Diana Ramaekers, BarBara Hanlo (PuntWG), Holger Nickisch (Director, Kunstfort Vijfhuizen), Gaby Wijers (LIMA) and the Nan Hoover Foundation (Rob Perree, Sandro Dukic, and Kathy Rae Huffman). We gratefully acknowledge their contributions.
