TIM CORBY DIES IN ROAD ACCIDENT Tim Corby, the British owner and bloodstock agent, died on Wednesday in a car crash in which trainer Mick Channon was seriously injured. He was 63. Both Channon and his 15-year-old son Jack suffered injuries; the Lambourn trainer is currently in intensive care in a Nottingham hospital with broken ribs and arm, a frac- tured jaw and a punctured lung. He is set to undergo surgery to his arm and jaw, while his son has only bruising, and is not thought to be seriously injured. According to local police, Corby=s car left the motor- way and hit a concrete pillar as the trio were returning to Lambourn from the Doncaster Sales. As the owner of the 2002 G2 Maurice Lacroix-Trophy winner and G1 Gran Criterium runner-up Checkit (Ire) and this year=s Champion Hurdle winner Katchit (Ire) before he was sold, Corby enjoyed much high-profile success courtesy of his longstanding connection with the Channon stable. He was also involved in the Box 41 syndicate responsible for the 2006 G2 Superlative S. and last year=s G3 Rose of Lancaster S. winner Halicarnassus (Ire), and also acted as racing manager for John Guest, owner of the 2000 G1 2000 Guineas third Barathea Guest (GB). TOBA COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS CHANGES TO CROPS The Action Committee (TAC) of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Asso- ciation (TOBA) yesterday recommended changes in riding crops and their usage for racing and training. Perhaps the biggest change is the recommendation for stricter enforcement of current regulation and penalties for non-compliance. ARiding crops are a necessity in Thoroughbred racing because they can help keep the horse under control,@ said Tom Ludt, general manager of Vinery and chairman of the TAC. ABut when the public sees a horse that is clearly non-competitive still being stung with the crop, racing projects the image of unnecessary abuse. Our committee listened to a num- ber of trainers and riders, including some Hall of Famers, and came to the conclusion that everything we are recommending is in the best interest of the horse without compromising its competitiveness.@ The recom- mendations also include similar specifications on the crop as those recommended by The Jockey Club Safety Committee: $It will have a maximum length of 28 inches; $Minimum diameter of 0.4 inches; $The contact area of the shaft must be smooth; $The flap (popper) must have similar shock absorb- ing characteristics to that of the contact area; and $The weight must not exceed 6 ounces.
