Foley, who had recently resigned: e have the honor and pleasure to inform you that today His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI appointed the Most Reverend Edwin Frederick O’Brien to the W charge of Pro-Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. On behalf of all we wish to express to the new Pro-Grand Master our warmest congratulations: we are confident that thanks to his experience, wisdom and prudence, he will lead our organization to reach even higher goals. The bill was cut 1.5 billion dollars, about 300 million less than we expected. 1.2 billion of the 1.5 billion came from the Banks. The House added over 200 million in refugee money. -
What Is a Capuchin Friar? What Do They Do? Who Are They?
what is a capuchin friar? what do they do? who are they? an introduction to the Exactly 257 years ago before anyone knew Capuchin Friars about capuchin monkeys (so named in 1758), there were Capuchin friars. It was more than 400 years after Capuchin friars came into existence in 1528 that anyone tasted a cup of cappuccino (first served in 1948). As for friar’s, no, they aren’t fryers, but some of them do prefer theirs fried, rather than baked or grilled. The ‘hood’? It’s all in the name. The brotherhood is found in all kinds of neighbourhoods, hoods and all. Even if you have known Capuchin friars for a long time, it wouldn’t be surprising if you found them somewhat mysterious. The Catholic Church has many religious Orders and communities of men. So what makes Capuchins different? Aren’t they Franciscans? And how are they different from Diocesan priests? It can all be confusing even for those well versed in Catholic life. Maybe you can recognize a Capuchin because of the curious, medieval clothing he wears, but you might wonder what makes him tick on the inside. Come to think about it, why do they wear that robe? And you might ask why anyone would want to be a Capuchin friar in this day and age? Is there a point to a bunch of men living together? Why don’t they get married like other people? And then there’s the money thing? Like everyone else they need it, but they take a vow of poverty. -

The friars do formulate similar plans, but their roles vary significantly. I contrast their approaches using Michel Foucault’s definition of pastoral power, with Friar Lawrence as an overly manipulative friar controlling the lovers in spiritual matters, and Friar Francis as a humble military friar returning from the Wars of Religion to share his authority with others. -

La historia de la gestación y el establecimiento del catolicismo doscientos años atrás, en lo que hoy son los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, especialmente en el Norte y concretamente en Nueva York, estuvo marcada de heroísmo por las enormes pruebas, rechazos, humillaciones y oposiciones que tuvo que enfrentar, los grandes sacrificios y luchas que tuvo que dar, como consecuencia del anti catolicismo intolerante, violento y perseguidor imperante en la época, protagonizado por otras iglesias cristianas provenientes de Europa y establecidas aquí con anterioridad. Han transcurrido dos siglos desde que John Carroll, (1735 – 1815) primer obispo católico en los Estados Unidos, pidiera a Roma la creación de nuevas diócesis y que, respondiendo a esta solicitud pastoral, el Papa Pío VII erigiera por Decreto a Nueva York como Diócesis en abril 8 de 1808, junto a Filadelfia, Boston y Bardstown. Estas cuatro diócesis se desprenden de la única iglesia particular fundada por entonces en la República de los Estados Unidos nacidos después de 1776: la Diócesis de Baltimore que, a su vez, había sido fundada como tal en 1789 convirtiéndose así, en la primera Diócesis de la República nacida en 1776 y hoy, reconocida como la sede primada de los Estados Unidos. John of Monte Corvino: Report from China 1305 John of Monte Corvino (1247-1328) was a Franciscan priest and the first archbishop of Cambalec (present-day Beijing) in 1307. He crossed central Asia during a rare interval of peace when that region was controlled by the Mongol Khans. Despite disappointment at the Mongols' reception of their early embassies to the Great Khan and his lieutenants, popes and kings in the West did not abandon hope of converting the Mongols to Roman Christianity and allying with them against Islam. On their part, various Mongol khans continued to flirt with the idea of joining with European Christian powers against a common Muslim foe. In 1287 Arghun, il-khan of Persia (r. 1284-1291), a nephew and subordinate of the Great Khan, Kubilai (r. 1260-1294), sent a Nestorian Christian monk, Rabban (Master) Sauma (ca. 1230-1294) to the West, bearing letters for the pope, the kings of France and England, and the emperor of Constantinople, in which the Mongol prince offered to become a Christian in return for an alliance against a common enemy, the Muslim Mamluks of Egypt. The Mamluks had rolled back a Mongol invasion of Syria- Palestine with a decisive victory at 'Ayn Jalut in 1260, and they were on the threshold of capturing the last of the crusader strongholds in that same region. Arghun died before he or anyone else could act on the proposal, and in 1295 his successor embraced Islam, thereby ending any hope of a Mongol-European crusade in the Holy Land. Arghun's overtures, however, set in motion a remarkable adventure for one European missionary. -

Award-winning veteran Catholic journalist Gerald ‘Jerry’ Costello dies POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. (CNS) — Gerald “Jerry” Michael Costello, a Catholic press veteran who was a reporter, columnist, book author and founding editor of three newspapers, died July 19 after a five-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 90. His funeral Mass will be celebrated July 23 at Holy Spirit Church in Pequannock, New Jersey, followed by burial at Our Lady of Magnificat Cemetery in Kinnelon, New Jersey. Costello founded Catholic New York, newspaper of the Archdiocese of New York, in 1981; The Beacon, newspaper of the Diocese of Paterson, New Jersey, in 1966; and Suburban Trends, a weekly that began in Riverdale, New Jersey, in 1958. His writing informed readers about international, national and local Catholic news for over 60 years. “As the founding editor in chief, Jerry Costello put his personal stamp of excellence on Catholic New York’s weekly product from the beginning and made it a standard-bearer for the Catholic press,” said John Woods, the newspaper’s editor- in-chief. “He was often out front on the biggest stories of his era writing with a clear, concise and authoritative style all his own.” Costello and the late Anne Buckley, who was a co-founder of Catholic new York and its editor-in-chief 1991 to 2000, “formed the best one-two set of editors I have ever seen at one diocesan publication,” Woods added. Msgr. Owen F. Campion, a former associate publisher of Our Sunday Visitor and a former editor of the Tennessee Register, newspaper of the Diocese of Nashville, said Costello’s passing “closes a lifetime of extraordinary service to the Church.” “As founding editor of Catholic New York, he created a diocesan newspaper that, from its first edition, took a place of excellence, in every sense, in American Catholic communications,” the priest said. -

God knows this, and he challenges us to avoid hate and holding grudges. In the law that Jesus preached, we are not even allowed to hate our enemies or persecutors. That is radical! It is easy to let injuries build up over time. Eventually we find ourselves far away from those we should be closest to or those we once loved. This separation starts in our thoughts and settles into our hearts and behavior. Hate grows, and if it isn’t controlled and redeemed, it can pull us down. We don’t have to hate, be angry, or carry grudges if we don’t want to. Our hearts and minds can be filled with God’s grace. We can work on three levels to overcome hate and anger: For Reflection visual, verbal, and physical. We can add further that it covers anything that is proper and in good taste. While it’s impossible to cite every rule governing all situations, by applying formal courtesy you will never go wrong in those situations not covered in this booklet. We should always display proper consideration for the office represented by the person. In no way should we let dislike for a person influence our respect for the office he holds. Franciscans In Egypt | 1 FRANCISCANS IN EGYPT The history of the Franciscans in Egypt goes back to 1219 whenSaint Francis met Sultan al-Malik al- Kamil (1218-1238) near the city of Damietta. Francis had gone to Damietta with the Crusaders, but with the aim of spreading the message of peace proclaimed by Jesus Christ. For a few years, he had been thinking of a Franciscan presence in the Muslim world, which he conceived as peaceful coexistence with the native population. Franciscans’ life of ardent prayer, of brotherly love, of poverty and meekness, would be a testimony to the Gospel. In that same year, Saint Francis inaugurated the Order Province of the Orient to encompass Cyprus, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, later to become the Custody of the Holy Land. Not much is known about the first four hundred years of Franciscan presence in Egypt. Certainly, it was not a continuous one. Around 1630 two groups of Franciscans started their life and activity in the land of the Nile and established a presence that has not since been interrupted. Even now, there are two distinct groups: one formed by the friars of the Custody of the Holy Land, and the other sent directly by the Congregation de Propaganda Fide and at present forming the Vice-province of the Holy Family. When in 1926 the apostolic vicariate of Suez (later called vicariate of Port Said) was established, the friars living there came under the jurisdiction of the Province of Saint Bernardine in France, but since 1957 they have become again part of the Custody of the Holy Land.
