  • Walt Disney and the Power of Music James Bohn
Libri & Liberi • 2018 • 7 (1): 167–180 169 The final part of the book is the epilogue entitled “Surviving Childhoodˮ, in which the author shares her thoughts on the importance of literature in childrenʼs lives. She sees literature as an opportunity to keep memories, relate stories to pleasant times from the past, and imagine things which are unreachable or far away. For these reasons, children should be encouraged to read, which will equip them with the skills necessary to create their own associations with reading and creating their own worlds. Finally, The Courage to Imagine demonstrates how literature can influence childrenʼs thinking and help them cope with the world around them. Dealing with topics present in everyday life, such as ethnic diversity, fear, bullying, or empathy, and offering examples of child heroes who overcome their problems, this book will be engaging to teachers and students, as well as experts in the field of childrenʼs literature. Its simple message that through reading children “can escape the adult world and imagine alternativesˮ (108) should be sufficient incentive for everybody to immerse themselves in reading and to start imagining. Josipa Hotovec Walt Disney and the Power of Music James Bohn. 2017. Music in Disneyʼs Animated Features: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Jungle Book. Rather, it is written in notes”, states James Bohn in the conclusion to his 2017 book Music in Disney’s Animated Features: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Jungle Book (201).

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: SELECTED WORKS OF COMPOSERS ASSOCIATED WITH HOWARD UNIVERSITY Guericke Christopher Royal, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Chris Gekker School of Music Throughout its over 100 year history, Howard University has produced and attracted many talented composers of many musical genres. Limiting this project to any one genre or focus would have lessened the overall impact of the music they created and the inspiration that has been a lauded part of the institution. The project will demonstrate the various harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and emotional contributions of the selected composers through interpretation of their music on the trumpet. Composers have been connected to the university in three general ways: as students, alumni and faculty; as commissioned artists; and through the performance of their works by notable performers associated with Howard. The pieces selected for this project exemplify a wide range of musical expressions and compositional techniques, and hopefully have been presented in a way that allows the emotional impact of each piece to resonate in a unique fashion. The selected works tended to fall into the categories of A. Trumpet and Brass Works B. Spirituals/ Meditational/ Religious Works C. Popular and Jazz Pieces D. Organ or other Instrumental Works E. Works of Historical Reference or Significance In some cases, certain pieces may be categorized across multiple categories (e.g. an organ piece based on religious material). As this was also a recording project, great care was taken during the recording process to capture as much emotional content as possible through stereo microphone techniques and the use of high quality equipment.

  • “We're in This Together” Heartbreak, Hope and Laughter
“We're in This Together” Heartbreak, Hope And Laughter By Irene Virag Newsday photo by Erica Berger For the past nine months, breast cancer has ruled the nights and days of Fran and Jerry Lenzo's marriage. Nights and days of heartbreak and hope. Nights and days of sorrow and sweetness. Like the snow-flecked night in January five months after the day Fran first felt a lump under her right armpit. She'd already had a double mastectomy and she was just starting chemotherapy. Fran's collar-length hair had been cropped short and she'd bought two wigs. She'd told Jerry what she wanted to do. "My hair is the one thing I have control over," she explained just after New Year's, on the morning she looked in the mirror and realized she no longer had eyebrows. "I don't want to wait for the chemo to take my hair. If I'm going to be bald I want to be bald on my terms." Still, Jerry was shaken that night by the sight of his wife standing in the hall with a clump of her coffee-brown hair in her hand. "Look at this," she said. And she yanked another handful of hair from her head. "Tell me this isn't happening." Jerry cradled his wife in his arms. He ran his fingers through her hair as he'd done so many times before in their seven years of marriage, but now it was different. Now Jerry Lenzo watched silently as the strands of his wife's hair floated to the kitchen floor.
