2 www.afl vic.com.au MULTICULTURAL ROUND Many Cultures, One Game On any given training night at Coburg’s Piranha Park it could easily double as a meeting of the United Nations. No other VFL club can boast as diverse playing group as Coburg, with 23 percent of the list from multicultural backgrounds. There are players of Lebanese, Turkish, Italian, Irish, Serbian, Seychellian, New Zealand, Sudanese, South African, English, Dutch, and Torres Strait Islander heritage. Coburg General Manager Craig Lees said the club is proud of its multicultural list and its ability to attract, welcome and embrace players from such differing cultures and religions. “We’ve got plenty of boys who have at least one parent born overseas,” Lees said, “And, if you look at our list holistically it’s probably closer to 70 percent if you look at their heritage.” Lees said there is nothing but total respect and understanding among the list of all cultures and the differing demands they bring, especially as the players of Muslim faith observe the month of Ramadan which began on June 29. Ramadan is a period of prayer/devotion, fasting, charity and self-accountability. Lees said the multiculturalism provides an interesting dynamic, but it was a pretty seamless operation where Coburg’s Gatluak ‘Paulie’ Johnson is a everyone was bonded by the common goal of playing VFL Multicultural Ambassador football and helping the Coburg Football Club forge its status on and off the fi eld. Firstly, he’s proud to be what he claims the only Albanian playing in the VFL. It resonates well that he’s representing his country and community. He is also proud that he’s been able to follow in the footsteps of his father Bashkin who played VFA for Dandenong in the 1980s. And he’s proud to have followed the football talent pathway to be playing for Sandringham. Zijai’s three brothers, Ahmet, Ymet and Ali all play football. It’s a part of family life. “My Dad played and my uncles played and we sort of followed them. Dad came from Albania when he was about 10, he just loves his sport,” Ziljai said. “From a young age, I grew up with footy, I just love it.” Zijai began playing junior football with North Dandenong then progressed to Endeavour Hills then Noble Park. It was at the latter club that the attracted the attention of TAC Cup team . He played in the Dragons’ 2011 premiership under now Collingwood VFL coach Dale Tapping as a bottom age player. While he wasn’t on the radar of AFL clubs, Zijai said he wanted to continue to challenge himself by playing at the Ziljai’s fi rst season in the VFL saw him break into the best possible level he could when he graduated from the seniors and play two games, but the year was interrupted TAC Cup. by a shoulder injury which erased the back half of the season. “We’ve got a good affi liation with Sandy, it’s a good pathway for Sandringham Dragons players leading on to The 20-year-old has rebounded to play 10 out of a possible Sandringham Zebras,” Ziljai said. 13 games so far this year. “I’ve been lucky enough this year to gain an opportunity to play,” Zijai said. Just one other thing, Yllber would like everyone to know there is, in fact, no i in his christian name despite the insistence of seemingly every club where he’s played to insert one into his name.

6 www.afl vic.com.au MULTICULTURAL ROUND Achieving his goal It is not just clubs where the game’s multicultural reach extends, the men and women in orange are just as culturally diverse. Cyrus Wong, a son of Malaysian Chinese parents, is a Photo: Arj Giese member of the AFL Victoria umpiring panel. Born and bred in Melbourne, Wong has always been passionate about sport, in particular football. But as a child, Wong was discouraged from playing Australian Rules with soccer the preferred sport of choice from his parents. “They thought Aussie Rules was too rough, too tough,” Wong said. Being in the western suburbs it was hard for Wong not to be swept up in footy fever, especially the red white and blue variety. “I’ve always been into sport and during the winter I was interested in the footy, particularly as my parents worked close to the Whitten Oval. “When my parents drove to work, I would always see all the fans going to the game, dressed up in all their colours and that’s how I started following the Bulldogs. “I remember the frustration of not being able to go.” It wasn’t until Wong had completed his tertiary studies that he decided to get actively involved in the game. “I spent the year watching AFL umpires trying to get a His involvement was facilitated through Kim Miles who hang of what they did so when I began I didn’t need as was a member of the same athletics club as Wong. much of the initial coaching as I’d already seen what they “Kim was always trying to get people who were doing did at AFL level.” summer athletics to do umpiring in the winter and she Wong began offi ciating in the then Diamond Valley suggested that I take up goal umpiring,” Wong said. After a season doing the TAC Cup and Development League, Wong graduated to the senior panel where he’s now offi ciated in 62 games. His passion for football is just as strong as it was all those years ago driving past the Whitten Oval. He might not have been allowed to join the fans on the march into the stadium back then, but now he has the opportunity to offi ciate VFL matches on that very same ground.

www.vfl .com.au 7 BRENDAN ELVEY 100 Games on the boundary Brendan Elvey has many people to thank after posting his 100th match as a VFL boundary umpire last weekend, but none more so than his brother Damian. It was Damian who suggested to Elvey when he was just 13 that he should try out as a boundary umpire. Like most little brothers, Elvey looked up to his elder sibling and decided it was a pursuit worth following. More than 10 years later he has no regrets. “I played footy at Under 10s and Under 12s, but I was more suited to running,” Elvey said. “Seeing my older brother umpiring I thought I would give football away and start umpiring.” While his brother now lives in Sydney, he still umpires and Elvey constantly seeks him out for advice. Elvey began running the boundary as a 12-year-old in the Essendon District Football League and within fi ve years was selected to tryout with the VFL. For his fi rst year on the VFL panel, Elvey umpired the Development League and TAC Cup games, but after one season he was promoted to the senior squad - aged 18.
