Mr Clive Henderson

Background: Clive is a Chartered Accountant who was previously a partner in a Big 4 Accounting Practice where he dealt with education clients. A graduate of University he has lived and worked for most of his adult life in the area. Currently serving as Chair of the College’s Audit Committee and he is Vice Chair of the Corporation. Clive became a member of the governing body on 09.04.01.

Clive is interested in the waterways of Britain and is currently the national Chairman of the Inland Waterways Association, a charity established to promote their conservation and use. GOVERNOR PROFILE

Mr Rob Grant

Background: Rob has worked in education since 2003 and has been at South Birmingham College since 2008. He teachers in Creative/Media where he specialises in 3D modelling and animation. As a pro- active member of staff he has been involved with course and department development, policy and research committees, and also has previously been awarded Staff Member of the month.

Previously various career avenues which have been explored include:

Artist: Landscape painter in oils, has had own exhibitions and has exhibited at the RBSA.

Politics: has stood to be a councillor for Kings Heath and ; former secretary of the Birmingham Stop of War coalition and has an elected role in the Kings heath Neighbourhood Forum.

Mr Mike Hopkins (Principal)

Background: Mike was appointed as Principal of the College in 2007 having been Vice-Principal prior to that. He has been with the College for 16 years. He was born and raised in Birmingham and is very personally committed to the City. GOVERNOR PROFILE

Mr Ahsan Haq

Background: Ahsan is a staff member and currently works within the Estates Department. He is also a governor of , Birmingham, Vice Chair of Golden Hillock Day Care, Central Birmingham, and Trustee of Central Mosque Ghamkol Sharif, Small Heath. GOVERNOR PROFILE

Dr Zahoor Mann

Background: Zahoor started his career working for British Airways in London. He then travelled overseas working in Malasia, Singapore and Australia. He graduated with a PHD from Kansas University then worked in various cities of the USA in the educational field. Eventually he returned to the UK to work in education as a school teacher and school advisor for , after which he then retired.

Zahoor currently serves as a Governor of Primary and Secondary Schools in Birmingham, was a member of the Springfield Neighbourhood Forum. He is a member of The Birmingham Governors’ Executive Committee Network and sits on the City Council Schools Forum, advising on budgetary matters. Zahoor is also a regional committee member of the AOC (Association of Colleges) Midlands.

Mr Ryszard Weber

Background: Ryszard has been a Lecturer for 25 years at Doncaster College. He was in the Coach Holiday Industry and was Assistant Manager for 12 years. He is currently a Director of Ulogix Ltd; a software and electronic development company.

Mr Ralph Gordon

Background: His main employment and Business career was initially with the Engineering (Tube Investments Group Ltd) then Construction Industries (John Laing plc) with responsibilities for policies and practices relating to recruitment, employment conditions, education, training and career development of employees.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development having links with this college since 1966 primarily representing construction industry organisations and has served as a Governor undertaking various responsibilities and duties for all aspects of College activities since 1989. Mr Pat O’Neill

Background: Pat is a retired banker at present and on the ITV Central Diversity Advisory Panel.

He is also Chair of the Irish Quarter Partnership Board. Read and Transcribe Braille for Focus on Blindness, promote young Irish professionals. Champion causes for Ethnic committees in Birmingham and .

Mr Henry Coore

Background: He was previously employed by Birmingham City Council as the Assistant Director Personnel/Equal Opportunities, Finance and Administration.

Henry has been involved with many national and local committees including Birmingham West Midlands Police Consultative Committee, Birmingham Community Relations Council – Education Committee, Member of the European National Committee on training and a Visiting Lecturer at Keele University on Community Education.

Currently serving as Chair of Governor at George International School, and governor of Wheelers Lane College of Technology. Henry became a member of the governing body on 10 October 2005. GOVERNOR PROFILE

Mrs Heather Jones

Background: In 1962 she graduated from London University with a 1st Class Honors degree in Biochemistry. She started her career in teaching in 1963 and has taught in secondary schools, two colleges of Further Education and H.M. Borstal, Usk.

For the last 17 years of her career, until her retirement, she was Head Teacher of , Birmingham. She has been Chair of Yardley Education Foundation for the past 12 years.

She is a trustee of the charity which runs Grey Gables Residential Care Home. She was appointed as a magistrate in December 2003 and sits in the Adult Court, the Community Justice Court and the Youth Court. GOVERNOR PROFILE

Mr Gerry Bermingham

Background: Former Sheffield City Council, MP for St Helens South 1983-2001, Barrister, former Solicitor, Governor of FE Colleges, Schools and various other bodies. GOVERNOR PROFILE

Angela Pocock

Background: Angela is currently Director of Human Resources at Birmingham City University, a role she took up in April 2005. She manages a team of staff who provide an HR service to the University’s 2,500 employees, as well as contributing to the overall leadership of the University.

Prior to that she was the UK Head of Human Resources at a US-owned publisher, and was previously Deputy Director of Personnel at the University of Warwick.

Angela is a graduate in psychology, with a further Masters degree in Occupational Psychology from the Institute of Work Psychology at the University of Sheffield. Angela is also a Member of the British Psychological Society, and is a past Chair of the BPS’ Equal Opportunities Committee and a previous member of their Personnel Committee. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Angela acts as a professional adviser to the Masters degree in Industrial Relations at the University of Warwick.

Born in the south east of , Angela’s previous career in local government took her around the UK, eventually settling near Coventry. Her association with Birmingham began in the 1980’s, and she has watched the significant changes taking place in the City since then. GOVERNOR PROFILE

Mr Alex Stephenson. CBE. B Eng.

Background: Engineering director at Alstom Transport since 2000. Previously senior executive within motor industry. 30 Yrs association with both Further and Higher education through technical or learning partnerships and governance.

First Chair of Advantage West Midlands ( 1998 to 2003). Held lead role across RDAs for transport and treasury matters.

Very wide network across UK local and national government and internationally in manufacturing and engineering.

Colin Manns

Background: Colin qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand, prior to a career in financial management in the process chemical industry with the Courtaulds Group. More recently he has worked in financial services as Chief Internal Auditor of the Coventry Building Society and has assisted the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship with a major European project.

Colin is a local man, born in Aston and then living in Erdington until attending Sheffield University, where he graduated with an honours degree in Economics.

Colin was appointed as External Governor in December 2010 for a term of 1 year, but has since been appointed as governor to cover a governor’s sabbatical leave until September 2012.

Colin is also a member of the Audit & Planning, Resources and Estates Committee.

Professor Phil Walkling

Background: Phil recently retired as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UCE - now renamed Birmingham City University. His role there was broad responsibility for the Academic programmes of the University at all levels, including the University’s own Further Education provision, and the Higher Education programmes offered in partner colleges, including South Birmingham. Prior to that he was Dean of the Faculty of Education, having worked in teacher training since 1973. His career as a teacher began in 1969 in a Manchester Further Education college.

Phil is a local man: he was born in Walford Road, and lived in Sparkbrook until he was 19. He attended Ladypool Junior and Infant School, Moseley Grammar School, and Matthew Boulton College (then in Suffolk Street).

He joined the Corporation in February 1996 and became Chair on 1 August 2007. Phil also chairs the Planning, Resources and Estates Committee and the Standards Committee. GOVERNOR PROFILE
