New Zealand fur seal holidaying on the Frankland River Some Walpole visitors were lucky enough to spot a New Zealand fur seal relaxing in the Frankland River this week. It isn’t unusual to see a seal in the Walpole and Nornalup Inlets Marine Park, however, to see one up close, resting and hunting, is still a special moment.

At a quick glance you might think it’s sick or injured, but this seal is actually displaying a thermoregulation posture. This behaviour is common in marine mammals, as they attempt to cool their body temperature using the available natural elements. More on page 5...

Rare Orchid Destroyed Conservationists are outraged over the destruction of rare orchids in Gull Rock National Park. WA Native Orchid Society member Lyn Alcock says a bobcat was used in an area where around 30 Queen of Sheba orchids were known to be located. "We just stood there on top of one of the piles of dirt and we were absolutely speechless," Ms Alcock said. "It was just devastation, sadness, anger and there were other people there who were experiencing the same as us." More on page 3...

From front page... It's not clear who is behind the damage, which was discovered on Friday. Ms Alcock said the orchids were recorded in an earlier survey and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions had been given the GPS co-ordinates. She said just over 200 Queen of Sheba orchids were recorded in the Albany area last year, so to lose around 30 in one go was significant. "This orchid is at risk now of becoming threatened, at risk of becoming endangered," Ms Alcock said. "Many people in Albany are aware of this orchid and go out to see it every year and marvel at its beauty. "And people from overseas even come to see this orchard so it's a great tourist attraction for Albany." The DBCA has been contacted for comment. ~Source: ABC Great Southern Facebook, Photos: Lyn Alcock

Australian seafood industry In the Walpole area steps up to the plate in war the against 1st Tuesday plastic Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), the national peak body representing the Australian seafood industry, has taken Plastic-Free July as an opportunity to highlight the innovative ways seafood businesses are fighting the war against plastic by finding replacements, implementing change and protecting the marine environment.

“We are proud to be involved in the Plastic-Free July movement,” SIA CEO Jane Lovell said. “All around the country there are diverse examples of how our industry is finding ways to eradicate plastic and protect the ocean.

“In Victoria, there is a Bins on Boats program where commercial fishing boats are offered free wind and weather-proof bins to reduce marine pollution. “In Tasmania, SIA member Tassal has committed to recycling 100% of all hard and soft plastics through a partnership with Tasmanian plastic manufacturer Envorinex. continued on page 12...

Holidays with the Pecks Who knows what may be in store while on holidays. While staying at Yuin Station, we were asked if we would be interested in looking after the museum which is situated in the Murchison Shire Settlement. Well why not we thought, something new to experience. So here we are managing the museum from the 29th of July until the 11th of August. Apparently the Shire hosts a huge Polo Cross event, and therefore there are 4 fields, all red dirt of course, surrounding the settlement. This is a yearly highlight- which spans over a weekend but unfortunately we just missed it. The museum is very interesting and has been very well done. We’ve met some fantastic people, many of whom have some sort of connection with us in one way or other. Even a 13 day A.P.T Kimberly Tour group of 19 people.
