• Small project coordinated by the ZALF in Müncheberg • Project was about biodiversity in agricultural landscape • Aim was to catch, collar and sample wild boar

Map source: ZALF 2011 • The investigation area was located in northeastern in the county of . • The round 420 km² area stretches from the city of in the east to the city of • Nordwestuckermark in the west.

Image source: Meyer 2011 • The Uckermark was formed around 10.000 years ago by glacial activity (Uckermark, 2012). • The area is very strongly influenced by agriculture • It has many natural features: lakes, swamps, forests and small habitats 5 17.05.2012 Meyer 2012 Preparation

• Trapping wild boar in is forbidden by law (BjagdG, 2011). • It is only possible with a special permit delivered by the competent authorities. • For the immobilisation of trapped wild boar and the use of collars and feeders further permits must be acquired. • The permission of the hunting area owner is also needed.

• Nature Conservation Office (State Office of Environment, Health and Consumer Protection (LUGV)): working in protected nature reserves. • Animal experiments: LUGV, veterinary supervision, animal protection/welfare, official veterinarian. • The Upper Hunting Authority: hunting law, closed hunting season.

• The Lower Hunting Authority: automatic or/and mechanical feeders. • The responsible hunt tenant of the area: permission in written form • When all permissions have been obtained everything from trapping to collaring is legally allowed.

• Regular sightings or signs (trails, wallows, footprints, rooting and faeces) of wild boar activity • No hunting pressure within 300m around the possible trap location • Easy access by vehicle (for building up the trap and later collaring)

• Safe for animals and capturers (animal welfare, self protection) • Affordability,easy to build, construct and transport • Different possibilities to trigger the trap • The trap model that was used was a wire panel box trap with a drop door (size:L2xW2xH1 meters)

• During November 2011 until February 2012, no wild boar were caught. • Only one sighting of juvenile wild boar on film. • The animals that were sighted most were racoons, roe deer and fallow deer. Other species were cats, birds, birds of pray and fox. • All permissions, except the permission from the Upper Hunting Authority, had been organized during a period of nearly 4 months.
