YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD MELBOURNE’S FUTURE LEADERS

Kicking a soccer ball around after school is a popular pastime for many teenagers, but for a small group of North Melbourne teens, the real action takes place off the field. Every Thursday the North Melbourne Youth Leadership Group gathers to participate in workshops and planning meetings with fellow youth leaders. Yaser Addo and Ali Abdallah joined the group late last year as a way to improve their interpersonal skills and gain some practical experience. Fifteen year-old Yaser saw the benefits from the outset: ‘I’m in year 10 and I’m looking for a job because I’ve got work experience coming up this year’. Run by community health organisation, cohealth, on behalf of the City of Melbourne, the leaders brainstorm ideas for activities and events then work towards bringing the ideas to reality with the help of cohealth Youth Worker, Kate Koomen. ‘The Youth Leaders receive training in event management, conflict resolution, project management and developing their public speaking, assertiveness, active listening and leadership skills over the course of the year-long program. Their involvement and the skills they develop assist them when looking for a job and they are also encouraged to use their skills to be leaders in their local communities’, she said. So far this year the group has organised two large community events, 2K16 Summerfest in the January school holidays, and a Neighbourhood Day in April. Both events were held at the North THE BIG ISSUE Melbourne Community Centre and aimed to promote positive relationships between young people and the local community. The group is very passionate about helping the community and are looking to volunteer their time at a soup van in the coming months. BIG THINKING ‘The benefits are interacting with people. You get more confidence talking to other people and asking them questions. It helps us to keep an open mind’, said Ali. Yaser agreed and said he is ‘definitely more confident’ and has Big Issue vendor Marcus Dixon is a familiar face for many at the corner of Degraves Street and Flinders Lane learnt a lot about the community centre and cohealth.
