Such substances are typically found in areas with an intense flux of vessels, such as marinas and harbors. This study preliminarily evaluated the occurrence of imposex in Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus, 1758) populations along the areas under the influence of the main harbors from southern Brazil (Paranaguá, PR; São Francisco do Sul, SC; Itajaí, SC; and Rio Grande, RS). Although no chemical analyses were performed so far to confirm the presence of organotins, the occurrence of imposex strongly suggests a contamination by these compounds in the studied areas and it is likely that the closest from the harbors (as the main sources) the more contaminated the environment. However, due to the limitations of S. haemastoma, it is important to assess the response of alternative species adapted to mesohaline environments and non-consolidated substrates, in order to make up for the lack of indicator species for some areas such as Patos Lagoon and Itajaí-Açu estuaries. Key words: imposex, Stramonita haemastoma, organotin, estuary, southern Brazil.

Boehsa aLaboratory of Marine Mollusks, Postgraduate Animal Science Program, Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz – UESC, Rodovia Jorge Amado, Km 16, CEP 45662-900, Ilhéus, BA, Brazil *e-mail: [email protected] Received: September 22, 2015 – Accepted: December 4, 2015 – Distributed: February 28, 2017 (With 2 figures) Abstract This study investigated the effects of tributyltin (TBT) on the morphology of the genital system of the gastropod Stramonita rustica in southern Bahia, Brazil. For this, 330 specimens were collected during the summer of 2014 at eight sampling points to ascertain whether male sex organs had developed in addition to the complete female genital tract in females (= imposex). The analyses were made under a stereoscopic microscope. Imposex and their associated indexes, and the sterile females, exhibited the highest rates in harbors and shipyards areas. Despite the total ban of TBT in anti-fouling paints on a global scale since 2003, the results of this and other studies indicate the continued use of those paints on the Brazilian coast. This shows the inefficiency of existing legislation and the need to strengthen enforcement of the ban. Keywords: antifouling, sterilization, harbors, TBT. The amplified partial mt-COI Department of Biotechnology, gene sequence using universal primers, LCO1490 and HCO2198 resulted into ~700 base pair DNA Vignan’s University (VFSTRU), Vadlamudi, Andhra Pradesh, fragment. The obtained nucleotide sequence of partial COI gene of T. lineata was submitted to BLAST India analysis and 36 close relative sequences of the chosen genera, Cerithioidea were derived. Maximum likelihood (ML) algorithm in-biuilt in RAxML software tool was used to estimate phylogenetic their affinities. The present analysis revealed that a single assemblage of the family Thiaridae supported by a bootstrap value of 96% is earmarked at the base of the derived cladogram as a cluster and emerged as a sister group with another four Cerithioideans. Our dataset brought add-on value to the current taxonomy of Thiaridae of the clade Sorbeconcha by clustering them as sister and non-sister groups indicating the virtual relations. Out of seven genera, Tarebia and Melanoides formed as primary and secondary clusters within the Thiaridae. The monophyly of Thiaridae and its conspecifics were depicted in the cladogram.

Bollettino Malacologico, Roma, 39 (5-8): 95-104, [2003] 2004 - Società Italiana di Malacologia Nomenclature of the smaller Mediterranean Cerithium species Serge Gofas, Vittorio Garilli & Marie-Catherine Boisselier-Dubayle KEY WORDS: Cerithiidae, Mediterranean, taxonomy, lectotype designations. ABSTRACT The Mediterranean morphotypes generally confused under the name Cerithium rupestre have been shown to belong to two different species. The cor- rect name for one of the species, living in very shallow rocky areas including splashpools, is Cerithium lividulum Risso,1826, and for the other, usual- ly living in the shallow infralittoral community of photophilous algae, C. renovatum Monterosato, 1884. Type material is figured for all nominal species in this species group introduced prior to 1900, and for some of the species proposed later. Orientations for future work in the taxonomy of this species group are suggested.

Present address: The Kyoto University Museum, Yoshida Honmachi, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8501, Japan (email: [email protected]) Received December 19, 2005; Revised manuscript accepted May 26, 2006 Abstract. Cerithiform gastropods possess high-spired shells with small apertures, anterior canals or si- nuses, and usually one or more spiral rows of tubercles, spines or nodes. This shell morphology occurs mostly within the superfamily Cerithioidea. Several morphologic characters of cerithiform shells are adap- tive within five broad functional areas: (1) defence from shell-peeling predators (external sculpture, pre- adult internal barriers, preadult varices, adult aperture) (2) burrowing and infaunal life (burrowing sculp- tures, bent and elongated inhalant adult siphon, plough-like adult outer lip, flattened dorsal region of last whorl), (3) clamping of the aperture onto a solid substrate (broad tangential adult aperture), (4) stabilisa- tion of the shell when epifaunal (broad adult outer lip and at least three types of swellings located on the left ventrolateral side of the last whorl in the adult stage), and (5) righting after accidental overturning (pro- jecting dorsal tubercles or varix on the last or penultimate whorl, in one instance accompanied by hollow ventral tubercles that are removed by abrasion against the substrate in the adult stage). Most of these char- acters are made feasible by determinate growth and a countdown ontogenetic programme.
