Centre for Education Don’t miss out on an extraordinary experience November 7–8, 2019! IQMH Fall Forum: Innovations in Cancer Diagnostics A gathering of diagnostic medicine leaders and professionals who want to elevate themselves, learn, share, network and get excited about diagnostic medicine; an IQMH Forum is never a typical conference. Why? Each event is underpinned with a specific theme and intention to ensure the programme will drive meaningful change and infuse a new outlook on quality. Our aim is to energetically inspire the diagnostic medicine community to overcome barriers and embrace the future.

Aimed at laboratory professionals in various disciplines, this two-day forum will explore topics specific to the laboratory diagnosis and laboratory involvement in the management of cancer. Continued on page 11 10

Continued from page 10

The intention for this event is to advance understanding of innovations in cancer diagnosis and care. • How can we make a difference? • How might laboratory practice be affected by new advances? • How might the patient experience be affected?

Speaker Spotlight: Dr. David Huntsman We are pleased to announce speaker Dr. David Huntsman, an inspiring leader and sought-after presenter. This man has changed the way both stomach and are diagnosed and managed. We are honoured to include this pioneer of genetic pathology on our agenda. He is a model of how an individual can make a massive impact. Dr. Huntsman started his medical career as a family doctor in Labrador. An interest in pathology led him to British Columbia which further bloomed into an interest in molecular biology and molecular genetics. From there, he become one of the first genetic pathologists. Dr. Huntsman’s work initially focused on hereditary stomach cancer. Prior to his work, little was known about the disease and outcomes for patients were poor. His research has allowed clinicians to identify those at a high genetic risk for this type of cancer and to recommend surgical treatment to prevent the disease. He now devotes himself to ovarian cancer research. Dr. Huntsman’s team take two approaches—biologically informed prevention and reverse engineering each subtype through genomics. The impact of Dr. Huntsman’s research is dramatic, with 340 published papers, many in high impact journals, and 21,000 citations in the past five years alone. He is founder ofContexual Genomics, the developer of a platform to empower laboratories to implement next-generation sequencing (NGS) genomic testing. This initiative provides better access to high-quality and cost effective genomic testing around the globe.

Speaker Spotlight: Malcolm Kendall Prepare to be fascinated by Malcolm Kendall, CEO and Cofounder of Microbiome Insights. He has graciously accepted our request for the latest information on the relationship between our microbiome and cancer. His presentation is entitled: The Human Microbiome and Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention... Inconceivable, or Not! Malcolm Kendall has over 28 years of operational management, entrepreneurial, venture capital investment and leadership experience, the majority of which has been focused on company creation and building value in technology and biotechnology companies. Before founding Microbiome Insights, he was the co-founder and CEO of Indel Therapeutics Inc., a Vancouver-based biopharmaceutical company dedicated to developing new drugs to address the global health crisis caused by antibiotic resistance. Malcolm Kendall and David Huntsman are just two of ten confirmed speakers, each chosen to bring a unique outlook on cancer diagnostics. More speakers to be added in the upcoming months!
