Langtons House is pleased to announce that the orangery has joined our portfolio of ceremony rooms from April 2017. This is our first outdoor wedding venue and is proving very popular with our customers. This beautiful Georgian structure is located in the heart of the gardens, nestled between the stunning new Victorian greenhouse and Langtons Hall. When getting married in the Orangery the bride will make their way from Langtons Hall through the gardens to their guests who will be seated outside the orangery. Inside the orangery the groom, best man and witnesses will be awaiting the bride’s arrival together with the registrars. The maximum amount of people attending an orangery wedding is 80 including two registrars, we allow eight people in the orangery (two registrars, bride, groom, best man, witnesses). However if you are using the orangery as part of a wedding package the maximum amount of people attending would be 50 plus the registrars. On a beautiful summer’s day this is the perfect venue, however we cannot always rely on English weather, but don’t worry we have alternative rooms on standby, Langtons Hall for the weddings and the East or West Room for the Packages. A decision will be made on the day of your ceremony by the registrar on whether the wedding will be held outside or not.

24 25 History of Langtons House

Langtons House is a grade II listed 18th century manor house. The house stands in a picturesque landscaped garden with a lake, orangery and bath house all dating from the eighteenth century. The house belonged to the Massu family, Huguenot refugees from France, who became wealthy silk merchants in the City of . The house was given to Hornchurch Urban District Council in 1929 under the condition that the building must be used for council purposes and the four acres of grounds remain open to the public. The gardens were originally designed by the famous landscape designer Humphrey Repton.

History of the Orangery

The orangery is situated within the landscaped gardens of Langtons House it was constructed at the same time as the house (approximately 1760). The upper panes of the glazed sash windows hinged open to give ventilation. The building has a heated rear wall to provide warmth for the plants in winter. The wall has hollow channels running through it and the heat was provided from the boiler house that is situated at the rear of the orangery. During the recent garden restoration the roof was renewed with glazed opening windows for ventilation. In the months to come the orangery will be redecorated and a new terracotta tiled path laid in the centre aisle.
