L OURENÇO Abstract: A synopsis of the fossil scorpions found in amber, from the Lower Cretaceous to the Miocene, is presented. Scorpion remains are rare among the arthropods found trapped in amber. Only five specimens are known from Cretaceous amber, repre- senting four different taxa, whereas eleven specimens have been recorded from Baltic amber, representing nine genera and ten species. A few, much younger, fossils have also been described from Dominican and Mexican ambers. Key words: Cretaceous, Paleocene, Miocene, Scorpiones. ABSTRACT A new species of Ananteris Thorell, 1891 (Scorpiones, Buthidae C. L. Koch, 1837) is described from rain forest in the area of the Ouarimapan river in the South of French Guyana. The new species Ananteris sabineae n. sp. is related to Ananteris pydanieli Lourenço, 1982. The two species can readily be distin- guished by: 1) much paler pigmentation of pedipalps and legs in A. sabineae n. sp., with only diffused spots; 2) darker pigmentation of carapace and KEY WORDS tergites in A. sabineae n. sp., with less conspicuous yellow spots; 3) differences Arachnida, Scorpiones, in cheliceral dentition: in A. sabineae n. sp. the movable finger has two basal Buthidae, teeth, whereas in A. pydanieli only one is present; the median and basal teeth Ananteris, of the fixed finger are more conspicuous in A. pydanieli. Phylogeny of the Polysphincta Group of Genera (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae; Pimplinae): a Taxonomic Revision of Spider Ectoparasitoids

A cladistic analysis of the Polysphincta genus-group (¼ the ‘Polysphinctini’ of authors), a clade of koinobiont ectoparasitoids of spiders, was undertaken using ninety-six characters for seventy-seven taxa (sixty-five ingroup and twelve outgroup). The genus-group is monophyletic, nested within the Ephialtini as (Iseropus (Gregopimpla (Tromatobia ((Zaglyptus þ Clistopyga) þ (Polysphincta genus- group))))). Within the Polysphincta genus-group, the clade (Piogaster þ Inbioia)is sister-lineage to all other genera. The cosmopolitan genus Zabrachypus is nonmono- phyletic, and has been subdivided into a monophyletic Nearctic/Western Palaearctic Zabrachypus s.str. and an Eastern Palaearctic Brachyzapus gen.n., comprising B. nik- koensis (Uchida) comb.n., B. tenuiabdominalis (Uchida) comb.n. and B. unicarinatus (Uchida & Momoi) comb.n. An Afrotropical species placed in Zabrachypus, Z. curvi- cauda (Seyrig), belongs to Schizopyga comb.n. The monophyly of the cosmopolitan genus Dreisbachia is equivocal, and we consider that species assigned to it are best placed in an expanded Schizopyga (syn.n.). The monobasic Afrotropical genus Afrosphincta is also a synonym of Schizopyga (syn.n.). The newly delimited Schizopyga is the sister- lineage of Brachyzapus, and these two genera form the sister-lineage of Zabrachypus s.str. as the monophyletic clade (Zabrachypus þ (Schizopyga þ Brachyzapus)). -

Epyris longus sp. nov., Epyris paramedius sp. nov., Epyris distinctus sp. nov. and Epyris variatus sp. nov. from Reserva Biológica de Duas Bocas, Espírito Santo, Brazil are described and illustrated. Examination of additional specimens of Epyris crassifemur Evans, 1969 allowed to analyse the intraspecific variation as well as to widen the geographic distribution from Santa Catarina to Espírito Santo. Abstract As in previous contributions to the JVATiTD, the aim of this note is to bring some general information on a particular aspect of the scorpion biology. An attempt is made to explain the possible coevolution of telson morphology and venom glands, which took place during several hundred million years and in particular since scorpions migrated from aquatic to terrestrial environments. Three components can be directly associated with predation and defensive behaviours: (1) morphology of the chelae and structure of the chelae fingers granulations; (2) morphology of the metasoma and in particular of the telson; (3) evolution of tegumentary glands in the telson toward different types Keywords: of venom glands.
