Dear Parents/ Carers

I am writing to inform you about what your child will be learning and the skills they will be developing during the Summer Term. Our topics are Beachcombers and Land Ahoy. Reading-Children are still encouraged to read daily. They can read comics, books or access our school online reading programmes Lexia or IDL. Our 2 class page has links to other free online reading opportunities such as Oxford Owl, Teach your Monster to Read and RWI Phonic Lessons. There are also reading mats for questions that you can ask your child, which will support their understanding of what they have read. Maths – Children have logins for Times Tables Rockstars, which is a great way to rehearse times tables. They also have access to MyMaths to support their home learning. PE – Daily challenges are provided on our year 2 class page by Stockton School Support Partnership alongside a range of other online suggestions to promote a healthy life style. Work for all subjects will continue to be available on our year 2 class page, which is updated daily.

We will also explore how much cargo a toy boat or raft can carry before it sinks. Choose a piece of cargo to load on a toy boat. How many of each unit can be loaded on the boat before it sinks? Children will use standard weights or non-standard measures, making predictions and recording their findings in simple tables and charts. Land Ahoy! Children will use a floor robot to navigate around a large map drawn on the school playground. Can they prevent their ship from crashing and wrecking on the rocks? They will also make a single presentation slide, using PowerPoint about their favourite part of the Land Ahoy topic. History/ Beachcombers- Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside! Do you? That’s good! We will be identifying Geography animals that live on the coast and designing and making our own. Children will see how the climate impacts on choices of what they will wear and the activites that they can perform. We will research local beaches and those that are abroad. Let’s design and write a seaside postcard…wish you were here.

Land Ahoy! Yo ho ho, it’s a sailor’s life for me. Get your sea legs on, it’s time to sail the salty seas. Navigate, investigate and explore the world, just like Captain Cook. How do rescues happen at sea? Find out about brave volunteers and young Miss Darling, rowing her boat across stormy seas. Children will also research pirates and life on board a ship… Shiver me timbers you land lubbers! Art/D&T Sketching an underwater animal. Children will research animals that live in the sea and draw their favourite. Design and build a Totem Pole. Children will design their own totem poles and then use a variety of media to make it. They could use Lego, play dough, empty boxes…the choice is yours! Beach Picnic- Children will prepare a shopping list of food that they need to make their favourite sandwich. They will then write the instructions to follow and make the sandwich. Sounds delicious!
